Hello all. I am nontraditional reapplicant hoping to apply broadly this year. I am also curious about whether or not you all think I have a shot at MD schools. I will be applying to both MD and DO but am more concerned with my MD school list right now.

Stats:

3.1 Undergrad cGPA/sGPA (without Post Bacc)
- Double Major General Science and Spanish
- Took quite a few upper division physics and hard math (diff equations/multivariable calculus I & II) which hurt my GPA. Still no excuse though.

3.95 DIY Post Bacc (Ochem + Labs, Biochem, Cell Bio, Genetics) done while working 30-40 hours a week.
AMCAS GPA: cGPA 3.26/sGPA 3.18

MCAT: 515 (131,127,129,128) (C/P score maybe helps with lower sGPA??)

ECs last cycle:

72 hours volunteering on a medical mission to under-served country. helped clean/move patients etc...
I am aware of the stigma of voluntourism although I disagree that this was the case here.

1450 hours (~35 hr/week for 10 months) in cardiac department at a major hospital
--Direct patient care performing EKGs, stress tests and placing holters monitor studies and interacting with physicians/nurses. Lots of clerical work in EMRs as well.

55 Hours shadowing various fields

Prior work experience in other fields unrelated to medicine. Some of these are fairly unique.

Speak Spanish well

Updates for next cycle:

40 more volunteer hours on another medical mission to different underserved country. Similar experience although much harder work.

More than twice as many clinical hours with better leadership experiences in my department.

Completed EMT course working towards National Registry

45 hours Volunteering at Local Food bank (actively working on these hours)

more shadowing hours

Trying to get some more volunteer hours at a free clinic or similar. (This will only be included in secondaries or as updates as primary is submitted)

Better personal statement. (without glaring punctuation/grammar errors)

More activities (6 more activities added with better reflection, hobbies, work experience and another meaningful experience)

More and potentially better Letters of Recommendation. Director of Cardiac department and another MD from the second mission.

Previous schools applied to:

MD:

UW (in Region): Rejected post secondary
OHSU (Mission based): Interviewed
UNR: Rejected post secondary
U of U (in Region): Rejected
U of A: rejected post secondary

DO:

Touro-CA: Interviewed
Touro-NV: Offered interview but could not attend

Schools I am considering:

UW
OHSU
UNR
Utah
Arizona
BU
Duke
Columbia
Case
Mayo
Pitt
Hofstra
Drexel
Albany
NYMC
U Miami
Rosy F
EVMS
Wake
Dartmouth
Tufts
Netter
Gtown
GWU

Any input on this list or any more schools is very greatly appreciated!

Maybe some new schools as well. Like NOVA MD and Cal Northstate

Check out Carle. Illinois. They're looking for candidates with high math experience. And their secoary is free. It's new but it's at a well established school.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check them out. I wonder why they want high math experience?

Are you aware that Northstate has chosen to deny its students access to federal loans and payback mechanisms?
Unaware that they chose to deny them the option. I thought it was a matter of them not being available because it is a new school.

No, they have chosen to do this to their students.. Because of their pre-existing pharm school, their MD students would have been eligible from day one. They denied all of them this basic opportunity. Do they deserve your secondary fee?

Hmm. Thank you for the heads up. Seems very shady and I wonder how that benefits them. If you have a second would you mind looking over my school list posted above?

They don't need to meet Title IV requirements. The same ones that even many Carib schools manage to maintain...
Have you paid secondary fees at the schools on your list?

I will be avoiding them then, thank you for the insight! I have not paid any secondary fee yet. I am prewriting down that list as I wait for AMCAS verification.
My goal was to aim at schools that are open to Non trads (avoiding big state schools).

Delete Duke, Miami, Case, Columbia and Pitt (probably Hofstra too).
I don't see enough quirkiness for Mayo, Dartmouth or OHSU, but that's your call.
Do you have any connection to Reno?

Quirkiness for Mayo? What type of students do they typically accept?

Great thank you for the input. I interviewed and was waitlisted at OHSU (almost pulled off of it too) because I went to the U of O. Ties to UNR. I am from Idaho and UNR saves 10 seats for Idaho (and other similar states).

As for quirky, my original post-graduate career was in wine (making wine, selling wine etc...) not sure that adds enough quirk but it is a pretty big career change.
