Bored, yet too busy. Odd feeling.

what happened to socute, sleepymed, h24g, and ineedsleep? been a while..hope you are all surviving!

Ok, hasn't been THAT long, but I'm bored in here alone. Maybe ectopic and roja should start padding again.

Don't know about the rest of us, but I'm on the trauma service. That's what happened to me. There is a mound of laudry in my closet. My house needs to be cleaned. The dishes have piled up. And my parents probably would like verification I'm still alive. Plus, I've fallen asleep on my phone calls with my boyfriend (like 5 min calls) twice in the last week. So SDN isn't the only thing I'm neglecting. Next month will be better. Hope everyone else is okay too.

sounds exactly like my life right now...

I ate too much popcorn and probably ruined my dinner. I just want a nice salad at this point. 🙁

everytime I try to give blood they say my "iron" (hematocrit) is too low. I ate all red meat and veggies this week and still came in at 35% today. makes me sad

I dedicate this song to all the women planning on voting for McCain JUST because his VP pick has a vagina. :boom:

Can you find another one for those who vote for Obama, JUST because he's black? 🙄

For the record, I'm excited about this election, McCain made a smart choice, and we're lucky as voters because we get to make history any way you cut it. 👍

Actually, over 90% of the black vote goes to democrats anyway, so there is no ideological change there (although this was an issue during the primaries). I'm not into affirmative action politics. If Obama was white and McCain was black, I would still be for Obama. I think it is ridiculous that in a time of crisis for our country people are more interested in race and gender than who is going to get our country back on track. Palin is not the answer, and if Obama wasn't, I wouldn't be supporting him, either, regardless of his color. Sure it's great if the country's leaders just HAPPEN to contribute diversity, but that alone doesn't make it a smart choice. I'm surprised at you. 👎

I hate getting into politics, but something about Obama scares me. I think it's because all his promises seem to sound great, but there is no answer as to how the promises will be accomplished. If he is offering so many services for free / less than it is now, how is this going to happen? It just seems too idealistic to me. If the answer is increased taxes, that means we will be pulling more money out of our paychecks, causing us to have less money we earned to get.

Of course I'm not saying this doesn't happen every year, because it does. It happens with every candidate whether republican or democratic. Some just seem to live on dreams and promises they can't fulfill more than others.

Ok, that's my 2 cents on politics and probably won't ever post about politics again.

If you're surprised at me, then you missed the point of my post. If you think that Palin isn't the answer, then say so. Having two X's is not a valid reason to discount a candidate, and by extension, those who vote for that ticket.

First week is going to be rough (mentally), but at least only 2 days long. PICU then child abuse center. 🙁 Guess I have to start somewhere.

Turns out I was in the NICU, and don't have tomorrow off 🙁 Oh well, still can't complain about a 3 day week.

Last outpatient peds session tomorrow. Last ER call tonight 🙁 Onto inpatient and ward call from here. I'm bummed - dunno when the next time I'll get to the ER will be. Possibly 4th year.

Finished outpatient IM today. Looked at my patient log. Turns out I saw ~80 patients in the 2.5 weeks I was there. Got a lot more comfortable working with patients. I saw a lot of different c/c, a lot of different people. It's interesting to look back.

Off to the VA on Monday.

I had 2 days in an abuse center and one day in the NICU, it was a draining experience (reality check). Starting another thing on Monday. Obviously I know what I am doing.

Glad to hear you had a good experience! Good luck at the VA.

Hopefully you get to see the ER when you have to help with consults and admits. Maybe those glimpses will help you remember why you are there. 😉

Started at the VA. Doesn't seem bad, but getting my ID was an ordeal. Buddy of mine's ID says "nursing student." I won't get computer access until tomorrow because of issues with paperwork (that I filled out 2 months ago).

That's rough.

Still in peds...not bad yet at all. I figured I would hate it, and I definitely don't (yet). Even had a few interesting diagnoses (never good for the patient).

17 minutes after I post you reply? You must be circling, waiting for this thread to pop up!

The computer thing is just a pain. The VA's EMR looks good though.

What did you diagnose?

I just happened to sign on actually...now searching through threads. It was a possible (still running tests) Lyme / RMSF / Ehrlichiosis. But as far as I was concerned, if the dr agreed, I can't be too far off. Going to have to call the dr in a few weeks to see what it turns out to be. I was just proud to remember to ask about tick bites on a first day with the main symptom "rash."

Oh ya, I know it isn't usually deadly, but the pt also has a known nephropathy that could be complicating the picture. (IgA nephropathy - thought those things wouldn't come back to haunt me)

We had a kid walk in the other day with the full-on bull's-eye rash x 6 all over his body. Things were like 6" in diameter. Loves to fish and hunt. Had the arthralgias too.

I wish it had been that clear-cut. No bull's-eye, plus bite happened a little while back (a few mos ago...but then again, there are those tick bites you never know about). Descending rash was about the most help we got.

3rd day of inpatient. The terrible organization of things aside (we've got these sessions/homework outside of clinic where nobody seems to know what's going on), I'm feeling much better about things.

I mean, I'm still slowing down my interns, but I'm getting the idea of the flow of patients and I'm figuring out what has to be done when.

That's great!

I know the feeling about slowing people down (but in the office setting). I also figured out my attendings will go ahead and see a pt if they think they will be non-compliant or it will take a while (due to talkativeness) or if they notice we are falling behind schedule a little bit. Considering I just finished my 3rd day, I can't expect much more of myself. I also just realized how detailed a log we need, so I have to try to see if I can get a back-log of the patients we saw.

oh ya...previous pt (above some posts somewhere) turned up with lyme's disease and contact dermatitis

Time to Match: 6 mos. 6 days.

Time to Graduation: 8 mos. 24 days.

Time until I get home from away rotations: 1 mo. 9 days.

Time in Rotations Left: 22 weeks.

My interns are all great, and my resident and attending are very good. My classmate on this rotation's kinda...irritating. The other day, we were talking about our patients, and I mentioned mine was going to be d/c. She then told me "You need to pick up a patient." 😡

Inpatient is getting better too. I made changes to my presentations that the attending suggested yesterday, and now that I'm at the next step, I realize the next "hole" in my workup. The ticket, I think, is to just take it one improvement at a time.

Inpatient next week I think. Presenting terrifies me. I got down the 30 second presentations this week, but not a long, drawn out presentation.

I remember those days. I am enjoying my vacation with hubby but will enjoy replacing anesthesia with feeling like a real doc in the SICU. I complain, bt I love being a doctor. 😍

found out it's peds ER, so I will be a really happy camper next week 🙂

Can't believe you already have some vacation time!!!

Gotta do it sometime - some people had it even earlier than me.

Hey- you're a conservative, right? What's your take on Gov. Palin?

Haven't kept up...will read up on both sides and tell you what I think both ways (I'm kind of in the middle on this election).

interesting, I got the impression somehow you were a liberal-despising conservative. Anyway, the VPs will be covered on CNN at 9 and 10pm tonight

haha...no...It's that Obama and McCain sound like they have some great ideas, but I haven't heard exactly details behind them and how they are going to be achieved...Until I hear that, I won't make a decision either way. I try to keep open minded and not pay attention to the groups, but I do tend to sway more republican (you did have that part of the idea right).

If the press would only stop cutting off the townhall meetings and stick with the issues instead of lipstick, pigs, and gaffes people would have more info. Obviously, you know which way I lean, but everyone (including the McCain campaign) acknowledges they are not discussing the issues. Obama actually is, now. Would recommend visiting the candidates' websites since the media is currently more into race and gender.

I just think it is important that everyone is informed on the issues and everyone votes this year. Our country is in crisis!
