:hello: Hey everybody,

Just saying HI from Atlanta. It's been a rough week with moving in (starting with a red-eye flight) and orientation, but getting settled in...

In compliance with h24g's 2 post policy:

Haven't interacted with incoming residents from other specialties yet, but does anyone get the sense that July will have a "first day of school" vibe?

Well, we have the obligatory GME mixer on tuesday. All of the people from their own residencies stick together, so I don't know too many outsiders yet. OTOH, since I have only done 1 of the 6 days of orientation, I don't know all of the people in my own group yet.

I'm sick of buying things for my house. Anyone want to throw me a housewarming party?

Only if I get one too. Not only am I sick of buying things, I need to wait until paychecks come to proceed. I have futon, desk, bed, and table, so the basics are covered. All decorating will have to wait.

I need money! I hope I can pay my rent without too much mooching

h24g...you are breaking your own rule here...lots of single posts on this page!

I know I will be in all your situations come one more month...Hoping I can afford the essentials...a bed. Forget the desk and couch...

Yeah, the Mrs. and I are in full "let's wait until we get the first couple paychecks" mode. We've got stuff, but having a nice big deck and two sad little plastic chairs for furniture just isn't quite cutting it.

And for my second post...ummm...trying not to think about the fact that at this moment I'm the best rested I'll be again for...well, the forseeable future after Monday.

I'm working on a case simulation for SVT (kind of an assignment). Any ideas where to look for this information (that includes vitals seen and trends seen with and without proper treatment)?

My couch in a Walmart futon and my desk is a cheap folding table (actually what I've been using for years). The bed, though, was the big splurge. For the amount of sleep I get I wanted something nice. And it is decent. There was a $3000 bed that was really nice (and quite a few times my budget) that I would have never gotten out of to go to work, so the cheaper one worked-because I'd actually get out of it at some point.

Good luck with your move. Remember move is a four letter word. 😀 It's better when it's over.

In other news, orientation has started for my hospital. Then we get an ER month in the dept. And then in August I get trauma. I asked for this scheduled too. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger. And if it kills you, you don't have to worry about those pesky loans anymore. Truly a win/win situation.

Since your screen name is ineedsleep, maybe you should have splurged. My bedroom set ended up being around $4500, and it is a comfortable king size. I slept on a futon all year last year, and my back still hurts. Now with my dark curtains I can sleep all day long.

It wasn't a bedroom set for 3000, just a bed and not even a frame with it. Plus, my credit card company already loves me. Didn't need their undying devotion for eternity. Sallie Mae already had first dibs on my soul.

Sounds like you got a nice set though. Oh, dark curtains . . . that is something I'm going to have to get.

As for the screen name, well just 'cause ineedsleep, doesn't alway mean I get it. I do wish though and sometimes nod off during BLS training.

As for my second post . . . just add this to the other post on this page where I didn't follow the directions.

Back to the land of civilized and no tractors. Couldn't be happier to be back. Family can drive me nuts in no time.

And oddly, can't be more excited that tomorrow is Monday. (could be because all I am doing is studying ACLS)

Awww. I can see a farm from my deck. I like not having to deal with traffic.
I'm with you on the family though.

Tonight they played symphony pops at the park here in town. Granted, this wasn't anything like the 4th of July in DC or anything, but they weren't bad.

I can see the farm from my parents' deck too...only 2 houses away. I just hate getting stuck behind the tractors and wheat trucks going 10-15 mph when your bladder is full from a long trip. It is definitely peaceful there...sometimes too peaceful because all that's there is family.

So tired. Trying to decide if I should go to bed.

After doing a pre-test, I now know I need to study tomorrow. I wish I were naturally smart at this school stuff...life would be much easier.

On the up side, did talk to the bf 3 whole times today...and about an hour or more each time. Almost like we were close to being in the same state.

I wish I could tell you it gets better. Actually, I can. It gets better when you both live in the same city again.

True...but by the looks of it that won't happen for a long time.

Bed time again. Still REALLY tired.

Ahh...that was some good sleep. Much needed. I think it may be time to study.

They get really old after about, oh, 1.
I am not looking forward to keeping all these things up to date.

<---- loves the cool SF weather

But I did kind of sleep in until noon now 2 days in a row. Feel somewhat rested now. Too bad after 8am it was interrupted sleep.

Why is it that some people are so disrespectful of other and don't take care of their pets? Is it really that hard to follow the rules in an apt complex? Clean up after your pet and keep dogs on leashes. Is it that difficult? 😡 😡

:boom::boom::boom::boom:

/end rant/

On the happy side, just noticed new ones:

:soexcited::ninja::eyebrow::diebanana:

h24g, are you going to become ez24g now that residency is starting?

anyone know how fast the treos run out of batteries? I just keep hearing bad things about the windows-based pdas and their battery life of 4 hours...

I have one. The battery might give out if you surf the net constantly for 4 hours. I usually go days between recharges.

8 days left until I take on the beast...

So not much running in the background unless you are doing something...you don't have to turn anything off? (I've only heard the big complaint about windows-based...don't know what the treo is) My contract is up in December and I'm switching phone companies, so looking super early.

I have a Windows-based Palm Treo from Verizon (model version 650, I believe). Whenever I use the touchscreen, the backlight comes on, but I have it set to turn the light off after 10 seconds. It is also set to turn off the phone after a minute. So if I surf for 4 hours, the battery is mostly chewed up between the backlight and the WiFi card.

Several programs might be on at any given time (there's a menu function that has a running list of hotkeys to the last 4 programs you've accessed), but I've never noticed them draining the power.

Other info:

Some Treos will be a combined PDA + WiFi, but no phone. I got a PDA + phone. My particular model also has an extra slot which can take standard flash card memory chips. Now, the company don't tell you that they are compatible and they don't sell one for the Treo, but you can get a compatible WiFi card through Palm. My school and hospital both have WiFi networks, and I use my card to access them for free. And when I travel, I can usually find an unsecured network. Spending $80 one time for a card is a lot cheaper than the $40/month+downloads wireless plan (via cell network) Verizon was pushing. 😎

I do notice problems with the memory size - it runs a little low. The designers must expect that you'll use the card slot for extra memory, so I just don't take many pictures.

I also had to turn on the key lock and key code to cut down on the butt-dialing, but that's an all together different problem...

I finished my first call (also my first day) this pm. Boy am I tired - and stupid! I totally forgot to tell the covering resident something. 🙁

I'm sure it will get better with time.

I may be contacting you when my contract is up...mid Dec. Was going to probably switch to Verizon, so you may be just the person to help me out....that's if you don't mind.

not fair +pity+

Is everyone required to be ACLS certified for their rotations or is it on a school-by-school basis?

ADD hitting me when it's time to go to sleep (or past time). My mock patients tomorrow may (**hopefully**) go easy on me with the pitiful-looking face (just a prediction of course).
