Recent Flu Outbreak

good thing pigs can't fly am i right

This is very true, and we need to keep it that way. We need to prevent pigs from drinking Red Bull at all costs.

On a related note, I went to the Redneck Super Bowl (Talladega) last weekend, and the person sitting behind me was from Mexico (I forget what part he said he was from)...and coughed on me frequently! Huzzah!

I wonder what it's like to work in the ED on a day like today... they've probably got a hundred emergency cases of "swine flu" they need to work up. 🙄
Stupid amounts of american airline flights were showing massive withdrawals/cancelations. Because of one plane incident...

Also, zombie epidemic is fine with me.... I always wanted to go through L4D in real life

It's funny that some of you say that the media is hyping this up. I've been reading stuff online, and some people believe the media is actually downplaying this.

The fact is no one knows right now the extent that this will cause. I live in LA, and I'm going to be extremely careful! If anything is going to wipe out people worldwide, it most certainly could be a virus like this.

what happened to the 80-100 young people that died in mexico? Are you telling me they died because no treatment was offered to them? The fact that it wasn't just the very young and old that died is what makes this a bigger cause for concern.

They were in mexico... there's no such thing as doctors or treatment, duh.:meanie:

Oh snap!

awww crap, i was supposed to go to cabo this summer 🙁

I went to the doctor today and paid 14 bucks a 10 days pill.

14 bucks was a big pain... although the doctor visit was free.

lol.. i love them AB's..

I can swear that my dad has almost no bacteria in his body.. he swallows a 500 mg everyday for a tooth ache... I think he bought them illegaly too - no sane doc would prescribe so many..

well.. i guess he could've just ordered them from india..

Good lord, man. Does you dad have GI issues? If not he will soon...

It's a conspiracy by the U.S. to reduce the cocaine trade across the border. Notice how as soon as it crosses into Texas from Mexico the two places it goes are Cali and NY. Coincidence that they both have higher than average cocaine usage? I think not.

I may have chosen the hospital I work at for rather accidental reasons, but I'm glad I'm doing it there, it's a great place to work and I'm really happy. I feel bad I can't be there right now in fact knowing all the work that needs to be done. You shouldn't underestimate 3rd world healthcare unless you see it firsthand and live it like I am. Your comments were ignorant and highly offensive. The worst is that people mock me because I'm gringa because of that ill percieved attitude.

I have seen 3rd world healthcare and it is indeed very lacking. There is a reason millions of immigrants hop the border to get free mandatory US healthcare for themselves and their pregnant wives.

by god! same as 9/11 and terrorism!

uber fail👎

if you were joking, good one👍

if they only paid in cocaine, we'd be happier

did someone call Mexico a 3rd world country...? lol But yeah, the immigrants are coming over for a variety of reasons, but they're not coming over for our healthcare system, lol.

Mexico is a first world country.

Actually, no, it is not.

First World can refer to either America and it's WW2/Cold War allies or any nations with an income per capita over ~$11,500.

Second World can refer to the former Soviet Union nations and their allies.

Third World is typically used to describe nations that are underdeveloped in critical area of infrastructure. This includes Mexico, most of South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

The more you know.

According to AP:

"The suspected number of deaths rose to 149 in Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak with nearly 2,000 people believed to be infected.

The number of U.S. cases doubled to 40, the result of further testing at a New York City school, although none was fatal. Other U.S. cases have been reported in Ohio, Kansas, Texas and California. Worldwide there were 73 cases, including six in Canada, one in Spain and two in Scotland."

"The WHO raised the alert level to Phase 4, meaning there is sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus causing outbreaks in at least one country."

This is actually starting to sound really serious.

agreed. this is how it starts, people.

Again no one has died in the US. Why? It's not freedom or liberty that's protecting Americans from the swine flu while killing Mexicans.

What makes the swine flu so much more dangerous than the regular flu? Is it just that no one was vaccinated for it? What about it is more critical?

ayt.. guyz.. I cosulted my doc and I'm gonna live.. I do not have swine flu, though I do have a rare respiratory infection...

dont worry guyz.. I wont cause bacterial antibiotic resistance since im taking the prescribed AB versus the self medication...lol

and, my state doesnt have any cases yet, so hopefully im safe here..lol..

btw, i heard the cases are now found internationally.. is that correct.. that seems seriuos..

Most diseases are found internationally, as every point on the globe is now less than 24 hours travel time from any other point.

Plus, it was international the second there was a confirmed case in the United States.

I'm supposed to go to Oaxaca in early June :annoyed:

I suppose there is some comfort in the fact that, from what I heard on BBC, it isn't just spreading rampantly through the air, it requires closer contact with infected persons than that. Of course, that still puts people at risk when congregated in relatively close proximity to one another, sitting on an airplane, etc. As a percentage of people infected, perhaps the death rate in Mexico isn't as dramatically greater than that in the US (although it is inevitably worse than zero, as to my knowledge nobody in the US has died of swine flu yet). There are certainly more deaths, but there also appear to be more people infected. Of course, we don't really know how many people are infected in either country.

didnt they have this during the 70's...statistically..i dont think we should worry..i mean i think more people die from the regular flu...also..i think this is something for people to hate mexico more...there the cause of the economic downfall...now its health....i dont know what else they can throw at them...i think this is being blown out of proportion..they should keep an eye...but....i find it rather annoying that people start running around freakin out...

MexicoGross domestic product based on purchasing-power-parity (PPP) per capita for 2007:

14,201.615

http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/weo/2009/01/weodata/weorept.aspx?sy=2006&ey=2009&scsm=1&ssd=1&sort=country&ds=.&br=1&c=273&s=NGDPD%2CNGDPDPC%2CPPPGDP%2CPPPPC%2CLP&grp=0&a=&pr.x=32&pr.y=4

Mexico is an industrialized, democratic nation.

Mexico's estimated 2008 gross domestic product based on nominal values per capita is 10,235. Plus Mexico was non-aliened during WWII/The Cold War making it third world, you also must account for the "Mexico is a ****hole" factor.

The virulence is not well established nor is its ability to be transmitted from person to person. The virus is a combination of several influenza viruses so it can have dangerous characteristics of a few different strains. Pigs can host several viruses at a time, including a handful of human ones, causing the strains to 'recombine' in a way. They are just waving red flags because they (WHO, CDC, etc..) don't know exactly how fast this will spread or how dangerous it might turn out to be. It shows the preliminary signs of a pandemic virus, but the cases in the US don't seem to be extremely serious..and all things considered the death toll in MX is fairly low, and it is difficult to know how quickly those who passed were admitted to a hospital before dying or what their prior health was like.

Here is a WHO faq that they posted 2 days ago..pretty informative

Except that Oaxaca might be the epicenter. Oops.

Yikes! Eye of the beholder my friend! I happen to like much of Mexico, not just the vacation spots, and find it very pleasant. You might be right that Mexico is technically a 3rd world country, but it is definitely not a place that comes to mind immediately when referring to the third world. I usually think of miserably poor, civil war torn countries that may have dabbled in genocide or a revolution recently. I guess it doesn't have to be that dramatic...but Mexico is no Darfur or Bangladesh

Mexico is also not even close to Virginia.

We... are... all... gonna....... DIE!!!!:meanie:

Everyone, please pick up a copy of the Zombie Survival Guide. I picked up my copy about five years ago. I am ready.

I've been preparing for the better part of college with my roommates. My knife throwing abilities are near expert and we found a secluded spot in the Angeles National Forest to wait out the zombie apocalypse.

Ditto. not to mention simulation training via Left4Dead

Apparently there's a case less than 150 miles from my school and everyone's freaking out about it. The university even sent out a letter to everyone to take precautions. I can't sneeze without people in the library looking at me like I have swine flu.

And you thought they were just kidding. I keep an axe in the trunk of my car for just such an occasion.

im not bangla... but just saying tht bangladesh is in such a bad position because of their geographic location.. they have occasional floods and there is no way to prevent them. they're a small country, so its not like they can avoid floods by moving away...

and, bangladesh has a way better government system then mexico. even though bagnladesh is many times considered smaller pakistan, it has successfully kept out international terrorists 👍 (its a different thing that they can't even listen to music w/o the gov't finding out..) also, they have managed to reduce their export of opium 4 folds in the last three years 🙂

My friend is from Bangladesh, he is also gay, he's afraid to go back because they stone gays. Sounds pretty awful if you ask me.

Last check no American deaths, look like the freedom does cure/prevent the swine flu.

This sure would be a convenient way to stir up the masses into consenting to some type of radical health care reform that wouldn't have any hope in hell of passing without "imminent danger".

Let's see if this makes sense... Avg flu deaths annually ~36,000 in the United States. Morbidity rate of the swine flu... ~160 all of which are assumed to have not sought treatment and 0 of which are in the United States.

Sounds a little like someone in charge is drumming up the population and getting us ripe for some new political change. My prediction is that within the next 2 months we're going to hear about some radical proposition by the new Obama administration and assuming the "Swine Flu" has the desired affect on causing hysteria and pandemonium, it will most likely pass.

This is why I feel that it's so important to educate people better in the fields of science and medicine. Our high schools do a pretty poor job of teaching students how to think critically about anything science related-regardless of who is saying it. In my area most people take things said by pastors, politicians, etc. and run with it without any hesitation or second thought. I can't count how many times I've heard "STEM CELLS ARE DEAD BABIES Aaaaaughibbrgubugbugrguburgle!"

I understand that not everyone has an aptitude for science, or even an interest, but I feel that everyone should have some basic knowledge of how things work so that they can make informed decisions regarding policies that will directly affect their lives. Oh, well. We're all sheep. Baaah. :annoyed:

A better government system?? lol. I just got back from a 2 month trip over there.. it has historically been one of the most corrupt governments in the world. They are currently under partial military martial law with a tactical force called the RAB that can do anything they want when they want to. They are fighting crime and corruiption for now, but there is nothing governing their actions at all. Yes they have kept out terrorists and reduced drug trafficking etc.., but at the expense of a rediculously fluid and immature government that really has no centralized leadership. They have the 7th largest population in the world (1/2 the US pop), and if you have seen the size of Bangladesh on a map lately you will realize how unbelievably cramped that is. Poorest place I have ever seen. Hands down. Mexico looks like the Ritz Carlton compared to Bangladesh. Take a look at the GDP's. They don't even compare.
