So I just got an email of rejection from East Virginia Medical School.
My GPA is kinda low so I guess I got screened out pretty quick? Even though I took the June MCAT and my score has not been released yet. My undergrad's committee letters also haven't been sent out to AMCAS yet.

Is it normal to be screened out and get rejected this early?

Wow they are sending out rejection letter pretty early. What was your GPA? You probably got screened out.

It's atypical to get rejection letters this early.

Eastern Virginia is known for screening out a pretty high number of OOS applicants. I assume you are out of state, and you probably didn't make their GPA cut. I wouldn't worry too much.

My cGPA is 2.97 and I wasn't screened out, but they might have factored in SMPs into their algorithm. If yours is >3.0 I'd be surprised and would contact admission

I have seen threads about this in the past, considering I'm VA resident I wasn't too surprised to get a secondary from them, but I know a lot of OOS candidates were screened out fairly quickly last year by them too...Nothing to sweat over! All you need is one yes!!

Sorry to hear that. It appears that they're strictly imposing their GPA and MCAT cutoffs. I do not look forward to my first rejection.

I think that I read somewhere that they have a 30 MCAT OOS cutoff, which is pretty lazy imo.

Well I wish i would have read that prior to adding them to my list... would have saved me some $$!

Yea I stumbled upon a post from sdn from I believe 2014 saying that they have a strict 30+ OOS MCAT policy. I agree, I bought her $35 flowers but in the end all she wanted was a boyfriend that was 6'0, 5'11 wasn't good enough for her.

Hey, look at it as them doing you a favor, because at least now you don't have to pay a secondary fee for a school that you would've gotten rejected from post-secondary anyways!
True but they should indicate such an OOS MCAT cut off if it exists on their website. Going by the numbers of people rejected, I wouldn't be surprised if it actually does exist.

Instead they have "In recent years, students matriculating at EVMS have had a mean GPA of 3.44 and a mean MCAT of 30."

That's pretty inviting for anyone with below average stats in either category especially when you take into account the 48% from OOS that matriculated in 2014.

im OOS got a secondary mcat is 26 from last year but got my masters and am retaking it in a couple weeks..... so I dont think its a strict cutoff unless it changes if you have a masters so I wouldnt get discouraged if you do not meet their min....

Once you submit a primary what exactly does school see? (Without being verified )

What would be even better was if medical schools just posted all of their screening cut offs somewhere where they're readily visible, so applicants who don't meet the cutoffs can save even more cash, by not even needing to be screened.

Even better schools should give realistic screening cutoffs meaning if they're screening for an mcat of 26 or better and only interviewing people with a 28 or better they should raise their screening cutoffs to a 28 or better. No reason to give me applicants false hope.
Yeah, but at some point, you're going to have to take on a little of the cost/risk-benefit analysis burden. If you're at their cutoff, you have to really think about whether or not you truly stand out in other areas enough.

At least they had the courtesy to not take your secondary money and then summarily reject you after they took your cash.

Good post. Also food for thought - If you're oos and have a sub 30 mcat you're not getting interview at eastern Virginia medical school. I literally called the front desk lady and she told me adcoms said that, when I checked my status last year. This place really needs to raise their screening cutoffs for oos student because it's just plain dishonest as of now

Their pre secondary cutoff can't be a hard 30 because I got a secondary with a sub-30 MCAT. But based on this, it seems like submitting it would just be a waste of money...

Their secondary cut off isn't, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten one either last year. Point being it should be because if you're oos and have a sub 30 mcat you won't get an interview, directly out of the horse's mouth.

Agreed. I guess my point is I'm glad I found this before I submitted the secondary...

I was planning on applying to this school, but I'm OOS with a sub30 score. And I dont want to waste an application... However I'm seeing that some OOS people with a sub30 score still got a secondary. Not sure if I should go for it or not...

Sometimes rejections don't make sense. People with 35/3.8 get some rejections (and I don't just mean from Stanford).

Hell, sometimes acceptances don't even make sense. People with 3.4/30 go to Harvard.

I think I'm going to apply and take my chances. According to their website, they really embrace diversity. "...places a special emphasis on recruitment of women, traditionally underrepresented minorities in medicine and the health professions (African Americans, Latinos, American Indians and Native Alaskans, and Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders), veterans and individuals who come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds."

Meh, there are better schools anyway, you still have plenty of options. I had very bad experiences with their medical master's program, and if their medical school is anything like that program, they did you a favor.

Off topic, but what were your bad experiences with their medical master's program? I was accepted to it last year but ultimately chose another program, and I'm kinda glad I did if your experiences were really that bad...
