Rejection Thread (If you are depressed, please avoid)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dr. JT, I thought your story was awesome! I think, unfortunately, that many of us would consider ourselves lucky if we got just one decent offer- but thank you for reminding us that it ain't over til it's over!

For those of you posting about the programs with spaces still in them after April 15th, here is a little clarification. These are graduate school openings in non-clinical programs:
"...'Graduate School Opening List.' This document contains a list of the programs in psychology that still have openings for students in the fall. Although there are no clinical or counseling doctoral programs and only a few nonclinical doctoral programs on the list, you may find other programs of interest to you." (Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs to Clinical and Counseling Psychology 2006/2007 Edition, p. 106).

A professor of mine suggested an experimental master's after I didn't get in last year because I don't have any research that's been published or presented. There are applicants on another thread talking about applying for research assistant positions at universities or medical schools in the interim of applying again, which could be a good move for some. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the clarification! I had never really looked at it previously, just been advised of the list's existence so wasn't positive about what it encompassed. I thought it odd that a clinical/counseling program would not have positions filled with someone, but who knows! Thanks, again--Good information to know.

I got an official rejection from UCLA a couple of weeks ago. It was a letter sent as an attachment via email.

I received one from UCLA as well. Apparently, my application was incomplete - they never got my letters of rec or my transcripts. I thought I had followed up on every school, but I guess I missed one!

Oh well - out of 17 applications, I guess it's not too surprising I screwed one up. It was kind of a "what if?" school for me anyway. Huge waste of time and money though!

Yes, got that one last year. Isn't that tasteful🙁

I just wanted to cheer up the rejection thread with a true story of my application process to grad school.

I applied to about 8 programs and was rejected outright by 2. I received these rejections pretty early on (end of Jan, beg of Feb). One program was a longshot, but the other was high on my list and I thought a good fit with my POI. So I grieve and move on. I am lucky enough to get 6 interviews and 4 offers by mid march. So I am thrilled as I start figuring out which choice is best for me. Then out of nowhere, I receive a call from the program that rejected me. Apparently they accidentally placed my folder on the rejected pile. I drove out to the program for an interview with my POI and received an offer the following week. To this day in my office next to my framed doctorate from this program, is a framed rejection letter from the same program. Never say never.

Great story!

Now if I could only do that with a PowerBall / Lottery ticket......

Just got a rejection e-mail from UT Southwestern Medical Center's Clinical Psych Ph.D. As with all other correspondence from them, they found the right words to say "we're rejecting you, but we still care" 😉

Good luck to all the other applicants!

Nothing new but i got my Kentucky rejection letter yesterday. Another one to officially cross of the worry about list!

I received a rejection letter in the mail yesterday from Michigan State Clinical Program.

Okay, programs are now sending out acceptances to applicants, so why the heck can they not send out rejection notices to at least those of us who never even interviewed? I can understand they might not want to do so if their initial accepted students choose not to attend for whatever reason. But, they likely have a whole group of waitlists or other students who they did interview but did not accept that can then replace 'em. Why keep the rest of us out here?

If it wasn't for SDN, I'd still be sitting here wondering whether I would receive an interview for x, y, or z program. Now I know some of them have interviewed already--so quit keeping me in limbo! 😡 Just send me my official reject stamp so I can move along.

I completely second that. Our 50 or 70 or whatever dollars just to apply could at least motivate them to say um, yeah, we knew we weren't going to consider you from day one so please cross us off your list.

emailed the clinical developmental to find out when interview invites were going out and got an email back saying while I had a strong app, i will not be getting an invite. so bryn mawr can suck it.

Umm,what thread is this?

I always love the "you're a strong applicant," "we were really impressed with you", etc., but we're not accepting you "but i'm sure you'll get in elsewhere." How the heck do they know that?! And, thank you very much, no I didn't. 😡

Do you perhaps mean the official interview thread? This thread (rejection thread) just recently started 😀

I'm 100% sure I'm rejected from Ball State University's counseling psych program. I didn't get the rejection email or letter or whatever they send, but their interview is February 9th. So that means rejection for me since I heard nothing.

Oops. 😡 I was wondering where this ended up. Sorry for the confusion.😀

 S'okay, you're entitled to one screw-up a day. Or perhaps we should make it an hour with this lovely process going on right now?

hehe, I just made my own screw-up, responded to someone in another thread regarding one program when I actually applied to a different program. They both had an identical word in 'em . . . they must be the same, right? 😀

Received an e-mail from UT-Austin's Counseling Psych program... rejection.

I have a few that I suspect are rejections as well, but let's limit the main list to those that we are sure of because we have gotten a letter or email (unless you all disagree). Feel free to post them, I just won't put them on the board unless they are "official".

Good idea

Hey just wanted to share my total agreement and my experience with this last year. I had to go ahead and call three of my schools (including one i interviewed at) in order to find out i was rejected. As time passed by and i heard nothing i was like ok no news equals good news. However if they have a lot of applicants some times they only notify people of invites and admission and wont send you anything to tell you you have been rejected. Annoying yes but be wary. If you havent heard and its getting close to end of March try and contact someone. I mean for me i am assuming any school i havent heard anything from yet is a rejection. Just so i expect the worst. I didnt know about this thread last year so i was completely in the dark. I LOVE THIS THREAD!!

Yep, same here. I'm assuming rejections if I have yet to hear from them and know others have--yeah, there are people who have received interviews weeks after others but it works for me. 😀 I have a few left but not assuming rejected there yet simply because I know they haven't sent them out . . . emphasis on word yet.

So, I haven't been extended an interview for UVA (not Curry), but I haven't gotten a rejection letter either. If I don't get a rejection in the mail today, is it safe to guess waitlist, or do you think they send out rejection letters in waves?

As of Monday the 5th (& according to the admissions secretary), Curry is finished extending invites. I've also heard that Curry is notorious for not sending rejections, even to those they've interviewed.

TRUE. I speak from experience. I interviewed there last year and was never again contacted. I had to email the contact person and be like "When can i expect to hear about admissions decisions?" and she was resonded by telling me they already extended offers and that i was rejected. I am interviewing there in two weeks for the second time. Anyway just wanted to let you all know not to wait on a rejection letter from CURRY cuz it wont come.

Okay, so I've seen where other people have allegedly received rejections from certain programs that I have also applied to--the same programs that people on here have received interviews for, so not too surprising. HOWEVER, I have yet to receive anything regarding an interview OR a rejection. Do I just assume I have a rejection and my letter is missing? Or sit and wait until April, then pester them for being so sluggish about it?

I'm in the exact same situation.

...wish I knew what to tell you 🙂

 well, you're no help! ah, well, I will likely continue on the assumption that I have been rejected and they're simply too damned slow and/or lazy to get my notice out at a decent time. Although one would think that I'd have something, particularly since others have received their rejections well before now. I will be SO glad when this is all over.

This one has already been up, but I was also rejected from the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities. At least I know for sure now.

Oh, I also wanted to say that this is always a good way to wake up in the morning--with a link in your e-mail (to the rejection letter) sitting in your inbox. 😀

Has anyone had a post-interview rejection from UGA? They said they would most likely get back to us by today and I know some people have received acceptances. But I am in the dark 🙁...and nervously nervous, if that is possible.

At least you have something! I'm still waiting for my rejection. 😡

I asked - they said they're still currently scheduling the first wave of interviews and there's no decision on my app yet. I guess no news is good news? Who knows! 😕

U. of Rochester Clinical PhD, by email today.

I received an email from UMASS Boston saying that my research interests didn't "fit" well with any prof's but they really liked my app, but I'm still rejected...or something like that!...

I'm in this situation too. I think that I will call on Monday to find out what's happening. I don't have the discipline to wait till April!

Did you initiate this email or did they send it to you without any prompting?

I haven't received an email yet, but I'm 99.9% sure that UMASS and Boston University have rejected me. Ah well...

Hi Fameousams - I read in one of your posts that you attended the UVA/Curry interview last year. If you feel comfortable, could you please tell me something about the format and your experience? I am freaking out...I've had two interviews so far, and have heard NOTHING. I'm trying to prepare a lot for this third one so I have some confidence going in!

Thanks so much. 🙂

Oops! I meant to PM that. Sorry, guys. I'm not quite on the ball these days. :scared:

Was the "official rejection" for Fordham Ph.D. Clinical? If we did not receive an invite by now should we consider ourselves "rejected?"

Did it look like a form email? I didn't get a rejection email but I also haven't received an interview.....

Same here...I can't find any status link on the online app either. I think I'll try calling on Monday.
