Rejection Thread (If you are depressed, please avoid)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
damn, I'm really pulling for you this cycle...I hope something turns out for you

 Thanks! I think that there are people out there with more optimism of me getting in somewhere than I currently possess myself. At this point, I'm simply waiting for rejections to be confirmed as all my other programs have already interviewed. It would take some oddity for me to be accepted without an interview, I suspect. This leaves me with two wait lists: one of which is highly unlikely since the accepted student only had one interview & acceptance offer, and one which is semi-unlikely due to some of the feedback I received during the interview. We shall see!

For those who an received official rejection from Drexel, I'm just wondering how you heard.

When Drexel called to ask if I wanted to interview for their Masters program I knew I was rejected for the PhD program. 😎 I haven't received anything official yet though.

The way *I* see it...you're not up against those other 20-40 people. You're "competing" against however many interviewed for your POI.

Though it may end in rejection for many...it does not end in rejection for everyone. It really depends on the interest, POI, fit, and other candidates. Unless you know where exactly you are on the list, and what factors are contributing to the decisions of those above you, you can't figure out your odds.

I don't know...I know hearing that you're on a wait list can hurt (it did for me), but it's still something. But, that's just me.😉

No, they're not . . . but if there were 20-40 other people who interviewed, the vast majority (if not all) of them are also on the same wait list. You're still competing with everyone else then to be accepted off of it. And, in my personal experience, it might as well be a rejection . . . I'm holding out minimal hope that I'll get accepted from one of mine. I'm being realistic, not pessimistic. 😀 But, that's just me.

I see some people got UC Berkeley rejection letters... did anyone get one for school psych? I haven't heard anything... I just assumed that meant I was rejected... but do I get a letter?

In most instances, no I wouldn't be up against 20-40 people. However, with some programs (including one I'm waitlisted on), I do have to worry about those others since this program doesn't accept by POI. They really do rank all their applicants, regardless of POI. It would be nice if they would tell us where we are on these pesky things! 😀

One would think that programs would re-think the wording of their rejections. I know that telling someone they're great, well-qualified, etc., seems like the thing to do but telling him/her "we know you'll get in elsewhere" or that "you will be pursuing your education in another program" or something along these lines is semi-ridiculous. HOW exactly DO you know this?! 🙄

Okay, this is semi-bizarre (to me at any rate) . . . I just received an email from the Facebook system that 'x' has added me as a friend. 'x' being a student at one of the programs I've interviewed and been wait listed at. This just seems slightly odd to me. I'm not going there!

Well, probably not. Even more confuzzing, I recently received another email from the program director at that university providing me with a vague "while it is hard to predict whether you will receive an offer or not, I think there is certainly a possibility that you will" . . . hmm . . . I dislike this. I am extremely impatient and my ability to delay gratification is apparently quite low right now!

On the up side, one of my profs gave me a box of chocolate mint cookies to cheer me up today.

You will find that 98% of other clinical students share this same problem.

(myself included)

I'm currently taking mine out on that box of chocolate mint cookies. I typically refrain from chocolate or cookies. Right now, my willpower is low. Damn that well-being professor! :meanie:

I have a question... How long should I expect to wait before hearing back from a school after an interview? I know it varies, but it's been over a week now with no word. It seems too soon to call and ask - I don't want to seem irritating and desperate. 🙄

keep in mind that monday was match day for those applying for internships so that sometimes impacts admissions of us newbies (funding, space in the lab, etc.) I wouldn't start fretting so much after only one week - some (few) schools get back to you in a few days. i would say most probably wait around 2 weeks at least. on all my schools websites it says you will hear by april 1 - i know that seems like forever - but it gives me more of a time frame april 1 is 4 weeks away - so we'll all heasr something in the next month!

Official rejection from OSU on Tuesday via snail mail. Whatever, I got into my top choice!

Post-interview rejection at UVM... I was the alternate and the first-pick accepted last night.

What a bummer. 🙁

*Ella

It's official. I got a rejection email from my top choice school. SDSU-UCSD joint doctoral program.

i do have another offer, and thankgoodness they are super nice and really excited about me.

*ella

thanks for caring, irish😍

who did the email from the sdsu/ucsd jdp come from?
i am sorry to hear that it was a rejection-- i am expecting one myself...

I didn't apply there but I feel bad for all of you. Not only do you miss out on living in San Diego but you miss out on the library (I forget which campus) which Spielberg supposedly used as a model for the spaceship in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my friend who was a student there told me this but maybe it is made up. It sure looks true.). And the library also houses original Dr. Seus manuscripts! Think what this would have done for your research!

As if the weather and scenery weren't reason enough to visit... 🙂

I got a snail mail rejection from UNT yesterday and I contacted URI who said if you were not invited to interview then you are no longer under consideration.
Looks like I get to eagerly anticipate doing this all over again next year. 🙁

Received a rejection email from U of R this afternoon. Just incase I didn't get it, they sent me another rejection email an hour later.

The email was sent by Paulette Johnson but signed by Dr. Steven J. Kramer. I don't know either of those names.

Official Snail Mail Reject from Suffolk and email from Duke..... Oh and no interview invites AT ALL.....

If you don't mind me asking, did you interview there for clinical?

Got my rejection from Duke today. I got an email saying I could check my statusonline now. But dont fret - I get a paper copy ofm y rejection too! Thanks Duke!

I received a rejection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill today. I actually kind of found it humorous, mainly because I wouldn't have accepted an offer anyways. However, it is humorous because it looks like this is a photocopy of my rejection letter. Literally, not a print out, a copy. Who kept the original? I don't know, lol. Dang I am a harsh critic of rejection letters!

I'm so confused now. UNC interviews are over, and I didn't get an interview, and everybody is getting rejections. Where is my rejection? Obviously I have BEEN rejected...why won't they send me a letter?

I haven't gotten a letter yet, either. But I did get an email response when I asked if they'd extended all interviews already (yes, they had), so at least I have *something* tangible to put in my "rejections" file. 🙄 Hopefully we'll get our real letters soon! *sigh*

It may be because Hipinion accepted an offer to work with the professor I applied to work with... Yeah, it is all his fault. Just kidding, I am happy with my situation.

Rejection!

Also Duke yesterday.

Are you late in the alphabet? I'm kind of late in the alphabet and I was thinking maybe they're slow...but if you're not late then that's not what's going on.

Well, the rejections just keep coming. I received these rejections by email, except Ohio State, who posted it online and sent a letter. I tried to find out if there were specific reasons.

Ohio State- could not provide me with a reason
Georgia State- could not provide me with a reason
Virginia Tech- apparently my weakness was that I applied to the clinical program with a career goal of becoming a clinician (according to my POI)😕 this is despite the fact that I expressed my interest in research as well as clinical training, and the fact that I have much more research experience than clinical experience. I just found out about this last night, so I'm still trying to absorb this. For some reason, I thought that one usually applies to a clinical program if one of their goals is to be a clinican.

Needless to say, I'm a little bitter, but I suppose there isn't much to be done. So far, I've had three rejections, one waitlist, one acceptance, and three that I'm still waiting to hear from. This certainly doesn't seem to get any easier no matter how many times you do this.

NSSRGrad07 - Sorry to hear about your situation with VT. Unfortunately, it isn't all that uncommon. Most PhD programs these days are more interested in training researchers than clinicians (at least that I have seen). I have some friends in the same boat with regards to that.

I'd recommend the "Insider's Guide to Graduate programs in clinical and counseling psychology". Its about $15 on amazon and breaks down every accredited program and rates how clinical vs. research oriented they are on a scale from 1 to 7. Might help you figure out which schools would be more open to having someone with the career goal of clinician. I'd stick to 4's or lower (which unfortunately, are increasingly rare in the clinical PhD world). May be a moot point if you have an offer, but if for some reason you decide to reapply, I cannot recommend that book highly enough.
Best of luck with everything.

Thank you Ollie123. I think I'm just frustrated because my clinical goals don't overshadow my research goals. My interest is in developmental disabilities, which I feel is an area in which research and clinical training are important. VT recently opened an autism clinic to provide services to that population, and they just started research in that area, which are the reasons I applied. Also, I communicated with my POI, and she never mentioned a problem. Anyway, rejections sting a little in general. Let's see what the future holds. Thanks again.

My advisor told me explicitly not to ask for elaboration on rejections because schools hate when they have to spend time doing that. So they may have just given you the fastest answer without it actually being accurate. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I actually asked for an explanation from one school just so I wouldn't make the same mistakes again. I think it can be appropriate, you paid their application fee after all. I have no doubt professors don't like to do it but sometimes you just need to know to improve yourself as an applicant!

I really wanna do it but I hate imposing on their time.
Maybe I'll do it anyway, to the schools that I really want to re-apply to... and pray that some nice person will take pity on me

Who do you write to for reasons on why you weren't accepted? I'd really life to find out from a couple of schools but don't want to seem pushy. I especially want to know what happened for those that I interviewed with. We spent a lot of money on these applications and I think some of these explanations could prove very valuable. How did you phrase your request?

I emailed my person of interest. The email was something like this...

First of all, I truly want to thank you for the opportunity to interview at *******. Despite the outcome I had a great time and you have an amazing program! I am sorry that it did not work out as well, but given the applicants that were there I have no doubt that you have accepted some wonderful people and the future for your program is bright. I will definitely add you to the list of people to get in touch with when I know what my future holds, and I really do hope that our paths cross in the future. Again, I think you have an amazing program at ******** and I hope to at least come to some of your seminars or things of that nature in the future!

The next part of this you certainly do not have to reply to but I thought it would be worth asking. I am a big believer in constantly working to improve myself and being open to suggestions when those opportunities arise. I was wondering if there is anything from your perspective that I can do to make myself a better applicant (and hopefully a better graduate student) in the future? If there is anything and you are open to sharing it, I would be very thankful and I promise it will in no way bias me against you; it just will make me better.

I guess that is about it. Thank you once again for the opportunity to interview and get to know you and I hope to meet you again down the line!

Wow, thanks Irish that's very very helpful. Congrats on your acceptance!!

I used that book too and it's definitely helpful, however I don't think you need to stick to 4s or lower. First of all, most of the top programs are 5s or higher, with most of them being at least a 6. Aside from that, however, I also expressed my interest in both clinical practice and research (on equal levels), and managed to get interviewed at 2 schools that are a 6 out of 7 on the scale, 7 being completely research-based and 1 being completely clinical based (that's generally just going to be PsyD programs). That's not to say I'm going to get in to either program, and I still don't know in either case, but they read my personal statement just like the rest of the schools and still wanted to talk to me. On the other hand, one school that I applied to that was a 5, that POI told me that he generally focused on more-research based applicants, though he did SAY it was not a problem that I had an additional interest in clinical practice. To be honest, a lot of professors have their own clinical practice or at least do some form of therapy at their own school, so for a lot of them it would be really hypocritical to not take someone with an additional interest in clinical practice.

Anyway, I basically used the book to rule out schools, like Wisconsin, that had a 7 out of 7 on the scale. Also, I know schools like UNC are trying to become MORE research-focused, so even though they have a 5 right now, they might not by the time you leave.

But yeah...the short form of this message is that the book is helpful, but it's worth trying schools that are higher than 4s because it CAN work out. I do think it's still important to be honest about your future ambitions just because you don't want to get there and (1) not be trained in one area and (2) have everybody be angry at you (I hate when everybody is angry at me), and things CAN work out (so I hear).

First, I wanted to say THANKS to whomever it was that set up this site. Like all of you, I am impatient to hear from programs, and so this opportunity to check with others on their status is very helpful. So far, I've gotten rejections from:

Duke
Ohio State

I have not heard a word from:

Miami University (Oxford, OH)
Kansas
Virginia Tech
BGSU
Case Western

I saw that one person got a rejection from VT recently. Has anyone heard from any of these other schools?

Well I'm rejected by Minnesota as of today, which is okay 'cause I expected it. Apparently I "should have" had an email a couple of weeks ago, but it got lost. lol.

Things have a way of being lost when they're getting to me. I STILL have never had my undergrad acceptance letter in my hand, despite the school mailing it 3 times. But I'm about to graduate. haha
