Oh god they’re giving their takes on how students can pay back loans..

Dear Dinosaurs,

Podiatry school costs right about $20,000 more per year in tuition than it did when I went 12 years ago.

I had a part time job that paid $25/hour. I worked the summer of my first year and worked when I could during the 1st/2nd year. It had no effect on my finances and it would have even less effect now. My wife worked and that was a financial boon because we only borrowed tuition, not cost of living. I should have spent that time reading and watching surgical videos.

The highest yield activity a student can engage in is preparing themself for residency and to be a successful future surgeon. There is always something you can be reading.

If you are a successful podiatrist there is no job or money you can work during school that will compare to the amount of money you can make practicing successfully down the road. The paycheck I received today was worth months of 40 hour weeks paid at my pre-podiatry school job.

She's got a million followers online and not board certified. Probably has minimal real life surgical experience at this point in her career after residency. She's the perfect person to ask an opinion on
Yet it looks like she works as an associate in just another mundane dpm group... May be different if she was triple board cert and fellowship trained

Her job is to be pretty and talk about anything that could be true. She could make a video about the importance of lacing your shoes left-over-right and not right-over-left and it wouldn't matter. When you're a content creator, you have to produce content. Quantity is more important than quality. Besides she probably takes a biopsy of the occasional mole in the OR and that's enough to give her surgeon cred.

Im all for podiatry content creators/social media people to be honest. They’re the ones who push the fact we aren’t just nail clippers to the general community.

That TLC show My Feet Hate Me or whatever it’s called I have patients talk to me about it all the time. That’s the only national TV show to ever tell the public “oh podiatrists are doctors too”

I'M PRO FOOT... I GOT NOTHING AGAINST THE FOOT

This should be required watching.

It's concerning that pre-pods are now welcomed to take out loans and start school without shadowing podiatrist or visiting the school in person or without MCAT.

...but at least make them watch that 20min episode???
It'd explain a lot and probably prevent at least a few of the "medical student" (despite bombing MCAT) and the DPM-yet-refuse-to-say-podiatry inferiority complexes. :)

I think it’s poor taste to criticize her. She’s just doing what she likes, try’s to be informative to general public. TikTok is for short attention span, simple facts which is why it’s so addictive to people. She also makes money, so good for her, capitalizing on her brand.

She's gonna get made fun of by the very nature of what she does. No way around it.

The same goes for Pimple Popper or Dr Mike or whoever. They make themselves heroes.. and it also makes them joke material.
As long as it gets their name out there, no publicity is bad publicity. It's just about monetizing clicks or likes or views.

The MSG I worked with years ago had an associate doc who was always telling me all about 'Toe Bro,' and I said, "that's dumb, seems corny... people won't go for that." But hey... it caught on pretty big when COVID hit; people were bored and glued to YouTube and Netflix - and have been ever since. He was the first real famous podiatry social media channel. That dude is much lower trained than most of us (he's Auz or Canadian or something chiropodist) and he probably makes more income for posting callus debride vids while we see ER patients and do ankle ORIF or flatfoot recons. It's not what I'd want to do personally, but people dig it. The Feet are Killing Me hit it big soon after that too; many patients and staff have asked me if I watch it (hell no). Regardless, it is here to stay: social media docs and their content creation (well, except for that plastic surgery lady Dr Roxy who lost her license?).

That said, people trying to be a celeb via social media or acting or politic or sports or any other way will get what they get. Nature of the beast. I'd just never feel sorry for someone who asks and lobbies and grandstands for attention when some of the attention they receive is not 100% praise and encouragement. :)

George Wallace once wrote in an ACFAS mailer that the key to happiness as a podiatrist is to not take yourself too seriously. And when you think about it, it is a pretty funny life choice to specialize in this overlooked region of human anatomy, and even funnier when you're a patient with a foot problem who then needs to see that specialist.

So we all have to walk that line between wanting to be regarded seriously but not that seriously. And we all draw the line differently. I would never want to be thought of as "The Toe Bro" but maybe that's how my pts think of me already

I get what Dr. Wallace was saying, but the truth is that could have come from a horoscope. We are simultaneously nothing in the vastness of the universe and the entire universe to the people who care about us. Many people reading this forum likely feel like their life has no purpose but it does. I need you to click "like" on my memes. You are like Desmond trapped in the Hatch on Lost typing in the password. You believe your life is wasted and in vain, but it is not. If you are reading this and have not seen Lost - I strongly recommend stopping at the end of season 2. You will be left with a strong sense of love and mystery that will crumble like a mycotic nail with continued viewing.

I find my purpose in life is separate from work to be honest. Work is just what I do to pay to enjoy my life.

Lost is a great show. I never finished it but worked my way through a few seasons it’s an emotional rollercoaster and there’s a lot of good meanings and lessons in the episodes

Lost was an amazing show-thank you for bringing that up, and also for the service of telling people to stop at season 2
Was an absolute maddening last season to watch

Yeah I stopped once they started expanding the storylines on the characters. The best episodes were their flashbacks of their lives before the crash which was basically the first two seasons

Yes, Lost was outstanding for a few seasons. The last couple seasons (Ben and after/off the island) just make you dumber and dumber... heybrother is correct for sure.

Nip/Tuck is amazing characters and brilliant show for anyone who hasn't seen it (and isn't easily offended).... made it great up to maybe season 3 or 4 (Carver) before falling off fairly badly for the last couple seasons.

The Americans was the only one I've ever seen that never jumped the shark... all 5 seasons were good and coherent and interesting.

We are doing Resident Alien now... with Righteous Gemstones and Deadwood on deck. It takes us a month or more to get through a season of anything; we just don't watch enough TV.

Nip Tuck was wild. The whole Kimber arc was so disturbing.

Most HBO shows do a great job at not jumping the shark other than game of thrones

That was ugly.

Imagine saying that to her face at a conference. "Your job is to be pretty and talk about anything that could be true." Good lord.

Imagine attending a conference that would have her as a presenter. Good Lord.

My comments are not meaner than anyone else's in this thread. Plus she's a celebrity while I'm just an internet troll, I'm punching up not punching down, so this is all fair game. She made a choice to put herself in the public eye, and I'm part of the public. I have a uniformly contemptuous view of all celebrity doctors, including her, Dr Oz, etc. They become successful because they're telegenic (i.e. pretty) and have a talent for capturing the lay audience's attention. In the process of doing this, you leverage your degree for clicks, likes, and ratings. It's distasteful to me, and I stand by my remarks. Don't like them? Hit the ignore button on my profile.

So do they do a lot of reconstruction over there?

Actually yes I know this is a PM News misprint, Dr Ng is a solid guy and a great presenter. But I could easily see the emergence of a "Reconstructive Fellowship in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery"

I didn't watch Lost so I don't get the Desmond analogy. But it sounds similar to this character also named Desmond, which I can relate to.

PM News just scours the internet for podiatry social media or newspaper stories... they change the text or take quotes to make them "their" news pieces. That is why it's such a joke.

I would venture to bet less than 5% of the DPMs and people 'featured' in PM News wanted to be - or even know they are - in their website / mag. I know I got made fun of when I have been in there a few times early in my career (no effort or consent on my part)... PM News just takes from stuff you might put in local papers or hospital websites or whatever on the net.

It's not really a joke. That's the way news aggregators work. Don't want to be on PM News? Don't do anything newsworthy.

Important exception: PM News stayed completely mum in 2018 with news about certain misconduct allegations about a certain Podiatric Dermatopathologist who took out a lot of ad space there.

This might have been posted before but this is a good read
Why do those trying to “grow the profession” not seem to understand this.

Its unfortunately difficult to find common ground between people who believe in the profession and people who "don't".

Lol, fungal dust lung, nursing home back/neck, nipper trigger finger...
At least he's thinking return to mobile work (instead of just how to scam disability insurance, TFP style).
Poor guy must have missed this one... just need to get associates to bust those crusties for you :

I think it’s a real issue as much of a joke as it is honestly. Maybe not even due to nail nippers but just podiatry life like cutting and using instruments during surgery.

Take into account we then spend the rest of the day typing away on the computer putting us at risk for carpal tunnel.

I think my neck is gonna go before my hand though and I’ve never even touched a nursing home.

I always feel like garbage after my surgery days. Spent time in residency wondering why I had headaches all the time, etc. Pretty much narrowed it down to being in the OR all day laser focused with terrible posture, lead, stress etc. I get out and practice as an attending where I’m not in the OR 7 days a week and they magically disappear except for my OR days.

When I have a wheel boi come into my clinic who can’t lift his legs onto the chair and I gotta crouch it’s a day ruiner
