Well, its a shame that the majority of voters determine whats legal and not whats right. Weren't we debating the latter?
Dude you REALLY need to take a chill pill. Just because the guy was smoking pot with one of his med student friends on interview day does not mean the guy is a stoner.
You are making a false assumption.
For every "stoner" (we'll define this as a person who smokes weed several times a week or more), there are 10 people who smoke recreationally, as in once every month, every 6 months, or every year.
If this guy was a stoner, it would be hard to believe he'd keep a good GPA, nail the MCATs, and maintain a decent array of EC's enough to interview for medical schools and/or get accepted.
If you have smoked before, you know it can take you out of your rhythm sometimes, especially if you do it often.
Sure, abusing marijuana has definite consequences. But abusing ANYTHING would. ...
Just because marijuana is illegal and cigarettes and alcohol aren't, doesn't make it worse. You've obviously never smoked weed before. I consider cigarettes and alcohol way worse. That list of negative effects of marijuana.. compare that to the negative effects of cigarettes and you'll notice a significant disparity.
Fact of the matter is, smoking marijuana once every blue moon is NOT that big of a deal. Just like drinking once a week isn't, or gambling when you go to vegas, or loading up on expressos during finals week. And don't bring LSD, shrooms, heroin into this, because those drugs are CLEARLY on a much different level than marijuana. Weed is on the same level as drinking, maybe even less.. alcohol impairs you considerably more in my opinion. How can you justify that this person is so horribly evil for smoking pot as to warrant a complaint?
I disagree with this, only because I am against pot, period. I don't think it's the same as alcohol or cigarettes. However, if you sincerely want to bring about change, then do something worthwhile, without assuming the role of possibly destroying someone's life, and possibly the lives of many others. He can write a letter or meet with Dean or AdComs and inform them of what he witnessed that day, and how he feels they should address this, without naming or singling out one or two people. This way the school, can address everyone and issue a warning that other visitors witnessed their vile behavior and were offended as a result.I think it comes down to your attitudes about smoking pot and the profession of medicine. If you see smoking pot as similar to having beer or cigarette, then you probably wouldn't worry about it. If you saw it as something obscene, then you probably would feel like complaining. It comes down to your values, what you thought was wrong. If the majority of Americans think smoking pot is no big deal, why is it illegal? The majority of voters do think recreational use of pot is a big deal and want to keep it outlawed, and so it is, for now, anyway.

You have just contradicted yourself big time. If you believe pot should be legal, and that it is similar to cigarettes and alcohol, what is your real reason for wanting to report the two students and possibly destroy their futures, which, by the way, it's sounds as if they are more than capable of doing this without your assistance. If you feel pot should be legal, like cigarettes, what's the difference in a doctor smoking a cigarette while on break? While I believe the students were irresponsible, they were not driving or treating patients, and this could have very well been an isolated incident. I am just surprised to hear you say that you think pot should be legal, but yet want to get someone else in trouble for smoking it. 🙁The thing is... I do see smoking pot as similar to having a beer or cigarette. And I believe it should be legalized. But I also think (and I suspect that most adcom members would agree) that someone willing to risk jail time, exposure to un-regulated substances and the lives of others (by driving while stoned) to get high, is not someone who is ready to be responsible for a patients life.
no i wouldn't report them. smoking a joint in broad daylight is quite ballsy and requires a great deal of courage. So - at an interview, an applicant and a medical student were smoking pot... what do you do?
I agree to disagree. Yes, of course he can still be "very annoyed", that is not the issue. This issue is him acting on his 'annoyance' and his role in taking steps to risk someone else's future even though he thinks smoking pot is harmless, his motives are questionable. I respect someone's innocence until they are proven guilty. If he wants to play Inspector Gadget and squander all his time and risk the ruin of his reputation by throwing around 'unfounded' accusations then by all means he is well within his rights to do so. 🙂There are two questions here: you're respect for someone who uses pot, and your respect for someone who is willing to break the law. It's perfectly possible to not feel that strongly about the act itself (thinking pot is harmless) and still be very annoyed that the candidate would be willing to risk his future and jail time just to get high.
Exactly. 🙂ask yourself... would you report this person to the police if you saw them at a party? If not, then some other competativeness may be factoring in.
OP, you are either a troll or a troll without the r. But either way, you should report it just to show the adcoms what a tool you are. For one thing you're attempting to report something with zero proof. What is the school going to do? Bust into the student's apartment illegally to prove it?
And for that matter, how exactly do you plan on reporting an illegal stash in someone's home when you don't know where they live. Based on you watching them smoke something? Here's a news flash, the cops don't actually have that much time to go around busting random people who just smoke weed, whose addresses you don't even know.
lol, in fact, I pretty much insist that you do call the cops, and record the conversation and then upload it here, just because I would love to hear how the police respond to this toolishness.
Oh, and in NY state it's a civil offense, so all that would happen would be a ticket for $250. Actually, the cops wouldn't even be able to get a warrant to search the med student's house just because you can't get a warrant based on some kid seeing someone smoke weed. So unless you can somehow link the medical student to a terrorist cell or something you're out of luck there.
And for the record? No I don't think people should be smoking weed on a medical school campus, but the OP's posts are just plain ridiculous. Seriously, wtf. If it really bugged the OP he should have stopped the med student from driving away while stoned and handled the problem then and there.
So - at an interview, an applicant and a medical student were smoking pot... what do you do?
I would have no problem minding my own beeswax... except that is illegal. Otherwise its not any worse than having a beer - but I wouldn't want a physician operating on a member of my family if they were willing to risk their career to get high.
*applauds*wow
this brings back memories of junior high. One group was trying way hard to be cool, smoking weed and calling the other group (who thought it was destructive, pointless, silly, immature) names meant to teach those nonsmokers a LESSON about being NARCS or SNITCHES. LMAO. And how old are most of you? the reason you are being so childish about the op's question is you are PISSED that if you get caught being "cool" your career won't be as an MD.
grow up.
OP, I think it was disturbing that those two were so unconcerned about what they were doing. Frankly, I think you should have called the cops THEN and walked away. If it was "cool" and "everyone thinks it's okay" none of these people here would be howling at the possibility that you might have turned those two children in. Consequences for your own actions aren't someone else's fault, they're YOURS, and trying to bully people who correctly state that you are wrong is pathetic.
*applauds*
Personally, I would. I hear all that stuff about nobody liking a snitch... but (and maybe this is highly unrealistic of me) I think that medical students/wanna-be's should be more responsible and health conscious than to sink to the level of doing drugs that simply only mess you up. Just my two cents.
Ask the gentlemen to please stop. If they blow smoke in your face and laugh, pull out a butterfly knife. Round house kick the med student while throwing signal flares in the air. Call the cops, knife the interviewer in the back, and tie both of them together with masking tape. Set the med student on fire and wait for the cops to show up. When the popo arrive, you're free to SPRINT to the deans office and tell him what happened.
shawwtaaay, i think yall really needta see cam'ron with anderson cooper on 60 mins so i can introduce you to a little something called stop snitchin....(the video be mad funny), but i be a firm beleiver dat if it aint yo business stay out of it....the lames who say they would snitch are da same lames who done been lame they entire high school, and college career and are the same introverted oxygen leeching failed abortions (with battle scars from coat hangers to prove it) dat finna have somthin like this catch up to them..when ish like dis happens, it gon fix itself...when dis is some harmless jawn like dis, and folk get all crazy about it, den cheaa, dis stuff finna catch up wit you soon nuff as well..its da way da world works...i aint tellin you to stop colorin within da lines--but what im sayin is, if one of yo classmates aint, then you juss dont go make a PSA to errbody yadig..that wont only get yo g-pass taken away from you, dat da kinda thang datll get u murdered alotta places. juss my 2 cents
Were you or anyone else being directly adversely affected by them doing this? The answer is an emphatic, N to the O...
Most people forget about a little thing called Self Responsibility. As adults, they must live with the consequences of their actions if they get caught, what should you care?...Hell, maybe it was a really stressful interview?🙄
ahh, the "anything that doesn't personally impact ME" morality
LMAO
actually, your post supports the consequences of smoking a joint in public being GETTING CAUGHT because you took the chance that someone who saw it for the idiotic act it is did the predictable thing and reported you
don't whine about the predictable consequences of your own stupidity
The people in the 'situation', just like us, don't need other people to dictate their lives when we are the ones who takes responsibility for what we do, nobody else. But hey, that's just the Libertarian in me talking😀
no i wouldn't report them. smoking a joint in broad daylight is quite ballsy and requires a great deal of courage.
doctors need courage
courage is american
you're not anti-american...are you?
So using marijuana is immoral? And now we're being taught ethics and morality by someone with no grammar skills. "Finna". Niiice.
Thanks Dr. Phil. 🙄

I believe there is some truth to it which explains why some people succeed in experiencing altered consciousness by engaging in risky behavior, some of which seems socially acceptable (skydiving) and others less socially acceptable (high-speed driving or recreational drug use).
Well its a good thing he will have the 4 years of Med School and then residency to mature.
Honestly I am amazed how many people would have turned the two guys in. I know it's a personal decison, but I would never have even thought about turning them in.
Just my thoughts.

Are you guys even reading this. I keep seeing posts about how this thread is full of nerds who would turn the guys in. Like 80% of the posts (or more) have said they wouldn't.
more "code of the schoolyard" bullying, excellent
ha, the theory being that the mere plebes in public schools are too weighed down by being plebeian to have some concern about flagrant drug use in public? or that private school students have something up their b*tts? sorry to blow up that theory---I'm from a public undergrad.![]()
oooh, SO many things to say, so little time.![]()
