Hi all! I am a D2 and am starting to think about residencies after dental school. I am having trouble finding resources in terms of what class ranks, requirements (ex: ADAT, research) are accepted by specialities/programs. Is there a place where all this information is compiled? How did you learn more about programs to get a general idea of what they want?
I've gone through some residency acceptance threads and the MATCH stats (not specific), but I'm thinking there has to be more info out there (like how dental schools had average GPA and DAT for acceptance posted).
Thanks!!
Google "Student Doctor Network how to match X" with X being the speciality. Or Google "Student Doctor Network 2019 X match". Here's what I've heard among classmates (Don't hold me to any of these, do your own research)...
GPRs: Too many programs to make generalizations. Class rank, ADAT, LORs, dental school, personality all come into play.
OMFS: CBSE exam is THE main factor. Class rank should be top 10% but not a deal breaker. You need several externships. Letter of Rec from director is necessary.
Ortho: GRE exam. Class rank is THE main factor, should be top 5. Research is necessary.
Endo: ADAT exam. Class rank is very important, should be top 5-10%. Very difficult to match straight from school, as a majority of programs require work experience. If no work experience, expected to have hefty amount of Endo experience from school. Letters of recommendations are important. Externships are a bonus. Research is a bonus.
Peds: Personality, letters of recommendation, and experience with children are the biggies. Class rank isn't a huge deal. I don't think there is an exam. Externships expected.
Perio: Class rank isn't a big deal. I believe many programs are jumping on the ADAT now. Externships are recommended.
Prosth: Not sure about exam. Letters are probably very important. Class rank isn't deal breaker. Need to show you have passion for big cases - I believe they ask about cases you've done throughout school.
Radio/Path/Anesthesia: Very program specific and generalizations can't be made.
