What happens to the students who do not receive a residency?

I'm going to assume that they get used to saying "do you want fries with that?"

In all seriousness, I would like to see some students/attendings give their answers to this...

Try other school programs do other research.

Research. Internship. Work with a Dr in the field. Anything to improve your application/social skills.

you can work doing non-surgical things in some states and actually do alright financially without completing a residency. I wouldn't bet on that being the case much longer though. things are changing

The answer will depend on whether the person passed the boards. Regardless of any possible shortage, fail the boards and forget about residency or licensing in any state even if it's just to clip nails. As far as I know, every state requires passing boards to obtain a license. If I'm wrong, I stand corrected.

If you do pass your boards and don't obtain a program, you must first assess the reason. Then the suggestions above are fine until the next cycle.
