Hey everyone,

Did any of you have a med school roommate who studied all the time? I really dont think that all of her studying is necessary, but she makes me feel guilty for not keeping my face in the books 24/7. Did any of you live with someone like this an not want to punch them? Any advice would be appreciated.

Maybe she wants to punch you for being a lazy @ss!
I don't understand why you have a problem with someone who's hard working though... would you rather have an obnoxious roomate who d!cks around all the time and never study and want to punch your face for studying all the time? I think you're afraid that she'll get better grades then you.. but you're too lazy to do anything about it so you complain.

Does she actually say things to you in order to make you feel guilty? I've never lived with anyone like that, but I have a friend who is a little like that, and it's not always pleasant to hear how I should be studying constantly when I feel like I'm doing at least a decent job and trying to maintain balance.

Sounds like someone is starting to feel guilty or jealous. You might want to use your rommate to your advantage. Ask her questions about the material that you don't understand. That way, your grades will improve with little effort on your part.

1. do better than her on a couple of tests with half the amount of time spent with the books...proceed to make fun of her to destroy her confidence.
2. Look up random facts on subjects you are covering and casually insert them into conversations to make it seem like you know a lot...laugh and roll your eyes when she asks questions.
3. borrow her books and leave so she can't study, when she complains tell her she is being selfish and call her a gunner for trying to keep you from doing well.
4. Is your circuit breaker in a community area of the appartment? flip the breaker to her room the night before an early test to cut power to her alarm clock, wake her up when you get back and ask her why she missed the test....tell her she needs to get her **** together or she's gonna fail out.
5. Does she drink coffee? Dump it out and replace it with the same brand's decaff...tell her she looks tired and should try to get more sleep.

i know of someone who studies ALL the time and i have heard that she is usually upset because she is not honoring her classes (she figures all the effort should lead to higher grades but is not the case). So don't worry if she is studying all the time. She might just NEED to study just to pass classes.

Don't worry about people like that. Didn't you have roommates/friends like that in college? And don't worry, there will be a ton of classmates in med school who study a ton...just study so that you understand the material. Don't worry about everyone else.

It's a common problem. Maybe she personally needs to study that much. It's like the rest of your academic career - you find some people need to study harder in order to obtain the same info that someone else may be able to do just by reading once. The ones who take longer are the ones who may get distracted more and have to read things over and over again. Anyway, in my class, not too many of us live together for that reason - don't want to get too stressed out when it comes to exam time. We set times to study in groups, but living with someone studying the same stuff as you would be way too stressful!

I have a friend who is one of those people who NEVER have to study (not fair) and does as well as, if not better, than I do on exams. She says that I used to stress her out b/c I was always studying. Eventually she realized that we are not the same, and that just b/c i've done 8000 practice q's by the 3rd week of the clerkship does not mean that she is going to fail. Just do your own thing.
