Hi - I'm 99% sure I'll be accepting an offer from RVC and am VERY excited about moving to the UK. Can any current students give me more information about living in Hertfordshire? My husband and I would like to get a cottage somewhere near the school and I have a friend who's willing to help me look for a place, but he needs more information about the exact location of the school. Would it be best to live within walking distance of the train station so I can get to Camden as well. Also, is there a shuttle from the train station to the Hertfordshire campus? Thanks!

I agree, if there are any RVC students out there, some input about your school would be great! I also have no idea where is the best place to look in London for an apartment (something in a young, fun area, but not too extensive...), any recommendations would be great!😳
mtambaschi, I am flying across the pond in mid-March to visit 😀, so hopefully I'll have a bit more input to add to this threat then!

Rachel is awesome! This is what she sent me re: living in Hertfordshire:

".Have a look at the following link for details about the location and directions to the Hawkshead campus (in Hertfordshire); http://www.rvc.ac.uk/AboutUs/Hawkshead.cfm#Directions. As far as I’m aware, there isn’t a shuttle from St Albans train station but there is one from Potters Bar train station to the campus which runs throughout the day and this is free. There are direct train links from both St Albans and Potters Bar to Kings Cross/St Pancras station so either of those places would be ‘commutable’ for your first year in Camden. . . .
.You may also find the following website useful which is for students of the University of London http://housing.london.ac.uk/cms/about.html.."

As Rachel noted, there is a shuttle from the Potter's Bar train station to the Hawkshead campus. It runs on a semi-congestion schedule (e.g., more frequently at peak times, less frequently other times).

My only comment on housing in London is "ugh." That is, you can find young, fun, etc., but those are not my cup of tea. I'm actually planning to move out to HH next year (2nd year) already, as I'm finding the city to be unpleasant. With that said, I spend most of my time studying, and have not actually done much that is social. I'm definitely the anomoly though - London is actually a very fun city, I enjoyed it thoroughly when I was here as a tourist - that's just not my focus at this point.

Rents in Potter's Bar and the surrounding areas are probably at £80-£100 per week if you go shares on a house. If you're trying to rent an entire house for yourself, they might be significantly higher (e.g., a 5-br goes for close to £400 per week, so a 2-br would probably be close to £200 per week). Rents in London are probably higher - about £120 per week, which is about what I'm paying in college housing.

Thanks Mistoffeles! My husband and I are definitely going to be looking near in HH. After 7 or 8 years in Southern California we're ready to live somewhere quieter. Is the town of Potter's Bar nice?
