RVU-COM (Rocky Vista - Colorado) Interview Discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Funny, that's part of what I talked about for the second to last question on the secondary.
It's the heavy duty sciences that scares me a little. Hopefully, we can all help each other out with our individual strengths and weaknesses.

I totally agree with you 😀

I can't wait to meet everyone! Hopefully you'll be matriculating with the rest of us! Good luck - I have my fingers crossed for you and everyone else submitting secondary applications and interviewing :luck:

Hey GG...I noticed on a prior post that you work at UCHSC...me too. Small world I guess. I am a medic down in the Emergency Department. Who knows, maybe we have already met on campus or something.:hello:

Hey! It is a small world. Are you out at Fitz? I assume you are since we are all pretty much out there now. 😀

I don't know if it would be inappropriate to make the suggestion that those who have decided to attend RVU and who are curently in CO possibly meet up just to introduce each other and create a few familiar faces...

Yup, down in the "new" emergency department. I just thought it was great to have another friend on campus who I don't even know yet.😀

I haven't even interviewed, let alone been selected yet, but I think that it would be a great idea if and when I do get in. I'm still crossing my fingers and toes for good news soon. 👍

Another secondary question...this should be my last...

Ok, on the last page of the secondary is where you are essentially informed that interviews will be 'closed file.' It says. "If you are invited to interview @ RVU, the adcom will have only your PS and LOR's to review during your interview. Please summarize your PS as submitted to AACOMAS and what distinguishes you as a candidate for RVU. Add any additional info you feel will be a benefit to you as a DO."

The above is a stand alone paragraph, with no real place for any type of answer...BUT THEN...the last and final ? on the app is..."Is there any additional info you would like the college to know about you?"

Ok...so are they asking us to have a synopsis of our aacomas PS and personal attributes ready as this will be the basis for our interview....OR...are we supposed to write in this stuff as the 'answer' to the last question? Essentially, are they asking us to simply write another essay answer summarizing all we've just written...PLUS some tidbits from our aacomas PS?

Any tips here???

by the year 2020 the US will be about 200,000 physicians short. This guy has been calling it accurately for the last 20 years and I believe that he will be right again. We are going to need more doctors and if capitalism gets it done, so be it.

If you think for profit education is immoral, what do you think of the disastrous public schools in most major cities? What do you think of non-profit universities that exploit graduate students for a decade or more and then turn them out into a non-existent job market?

I say "hooray for Rocky Vista" and all of you should too.

Obnox,

You just don't get it, do you?.....NOBODY CARES

The opposition has nothing to do with morals, beliefs or values. It has to do with MONEY. I have beat that drum into the ground. The paranoia stems from a supply-and-demand issue.

$$$$$MONEY$$$$MONEY$$$$MONEY$$$$$$MONEY$$$$MONEY$$$$MONEY$$$

If for profit is the devil then WHY IS HEALTH INSURANCE A FOR PROFIT BUSINESS!!!!

I don't think anybody cares..............unless, of course there is a bunch of money involved.

Ain't no incentive.

I am well aware that some people are in this business solely for the almighty dollar. I do believe, however, that there are some people who loathe the profit motive.

Here are descriptions of two courses from Indiana University (I did not go there) that everyone ought to take before they start discussing these issues:

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Verdana].E201 Introduction to Microeconomics (3 cr.) S & H.. Scarcity, opportunity cost, competitive and non-competitive market pricing, and interdependence as an analytical core. olywa,
I basically ended up summerizing things that were in my PS for the top questions.
Then for the last question I explained why I didn't have a committee letter and what they could expect to recieve instead. This was at the suggestion of the admissions person I spoke with. I also thanked them for their time and consideration.
Hope this helps. Good luck!:luck:

Thanks PMLizard....

it's nice to see someone actually posting helpful advice rather than the continuing asinine debates that seem to permeate this thread

I guess it's time for the reminder again. This is the applicant interview thread. Those of you who are not applying, or don't have helpful advice for the RVU applicants, are asked to take your discussions to the appropriate thread. There is already one for non-applicants to discuss all they want about the school.

Merry Xmas...

Thanks PMLizard....

Olywa, I copy & pasted my AACOMAS essay and expanded on it a little bit - added to it to include recent activities and other pertinent information. I did this because they do not have your AACOMAS application in the interview. They read my essays before the interview and asked questions about what I wrote, so they do take the essays seriously. That was for the PS summary (but I really didn't summarize it!)

For the "Is there anything else" essay, I discussed my personal traits and characteristics that I feel will make me a benefit to RVUCOM and to the osteopathic profession.

I hope this helps a little. It may not - it just depends on how your essays are structured and what info you provided on your AACOMAS essay.

Good Luck!

I think this is very similar to the midwestern interviews except they do not have your lors, just your ps. I think the point of this is so that they get to know you and do not get obsessed with your gpa/ mcat scores.

Yeah, I'm sick of reading all of the crap that gets posted. Like you said, its nice to see some people here who are interested in making a new school great!
Let me know if I can help you out more!

Talked to Renee...I'm complete and will hear this afternoon. 👍
I have my fingers crossed, but it's making it hard to work today!

Let us know ASAP!!!

:luck::luck::luck::luck:

Trust me, you guys will be in the line of people to holler at. I'm checking my email constantly, but I'm at work today so I'm trying to contain potential excitement!!!

Hi I just found out I have to make it to CO (from VT...) in less than a week- can any locals (or at least past interviewers) please help me with some info.?
I already have to spend quite a bit on short notice air-fare...so any help would be appreciated!! Did anyone stay right in Centennial? Is it possible to get a bus or other public transport to Centennial (vs. renting car)?
Any other tid-bits would be great- there isn't much for posted feedback.....
THANK YOU!!!!😕

DIA Shuttle services will take you from DIA to the hotel for around $20 each way - I don't know how much a rental car is so I don't know if that helps you save. You can go to www.rtd-denver.com and plan your trip from the airport to the hotel - this will save you lots with only three or so bus changes and the bus service in Denver is pretty good. When you're looking at hotels, you can also look in the Denver Technical Center (DTC) and Englewood, CO for a place to stay. If you can find one on Arapahoe Road it would be just be a short cab or bus ride to the interview. I hope this is a start. Let me know if you need more help or have any more questions!

This is, I would assume, a tired question by now, but one worth asking. For those who are going to interview, those who have already, and those who have been accepted, what specific loan programs are you looking at to finance your education? Has the school provided worthwhile information in this regard?

Sorry for those who find this post tedious! Just skip right on past it!

I agree. DIA is a long way from Arapahoe road. I would say your best bet is to find a place in the DTC to stay the night you get into town. Yes, it would be a rough trip, especially if your plane comes in during the evening, but the morning of your interview will be easier because you're that much closer to RV. I would also suggest renting a car because with the amount of driving you'll have to do, driving yourself, and on your own schedule (as apposed to RTD's) would be much easier.

Yup, down in the "new" emergency department. I just thought it was great to have another friend on campus who I don't even know yet.😀
How is it there? I saw much of the campus go up, and a bunch of my old co-workers are there now.

Best of luck to those interviewing.

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually got similar advice from a close friend who used to live in the area for ages....who of course just moved away. I just want to ask one more question- I have heard lots about a "temporary" address...that is the one where all the materials have been sent, etc....Racine circle in Centennial? Sorry if it is obvious....just don't want to end up in the wrong spot. Excited!

Yes, the Racine Circle is the temporary address for the current offices.

Well, it's different. There have been some major growing pains, but things seem to be working out okay. It's a much bigger campus than 9th Ave was.

I had an interview at RVU on relatively short notice. I flew into Denver INTL I asked the admissions reps about hotel arrangements and they suggested the Hampton Inn. I did in fact stay at the Hampton Inn of Parker. It is near the school and it was relatively inexpensive. I would suggest renting a car if you are not from the area and doing some exploring. Ask the admissions reps about the Hampton Inn. It is a convenient place to stay.

The Wingate in the area is brand new and uber nice, too - especially if you can land an off-peak rate.

I got the call from Kerri today at RVU...I got invited for an interview!!!!😀 I get to call tomorrow to see about getting it scheduled. I'm excited and relieved all rolled into one.👍

Hey DRPL...congrats on your interview! 👍 Did you decide to reschedule? When are you going to be in CO?

Simply put... why RVU? What are some of the answers out there?? Rocky Vista is the only interview invite I have so far (1 on hold and waiting for 8 other schools). I'm excited just to have an interview on Dec 18th and hopefully I can secure a seat for next year.I think having new facilities are a bonus and I live in Kansas so it isn't that far from family. I've also been impressed with the admissions staff. I don't know if that would be an adequate answer or not. Thanks for any help.

hey everybody, I had an interview at RVU on the 29th of Nov. the next day... they called me back and told me i got in!!! so thoughts about the school. The staff were very friendly. The first doctor we met at the interview broke the ice by telling us the story of how he dropped the tailgate of his truck on his nose. we all had a good laugh about it because the scab was quite big. As for the WHY RVU? this is what i said and i meant every word. Brand new facility, dedicated staff (and it's obvious from the moment you meet them), i prefer osteopathic medicine, and it's not everyday you get to be the charter class of a brand new school, its the opportunity of a life. I would recommend renting a car. I got to know the area and i drove past the construction site, the school looks like it's going to be massive and kick ass! if anyone has questions i'd be happy to help out, plus i'm from illinois so if anybody wants to start looking at apts. and needs a roommate for the start of school let me know! 😀😉

Way to go every1...congratulations.👍I have my interview on the 21st and I am really excited for it. I too hope to be part of something as big and special as opening a new school. I live in Colorado and it would be fantastic to stay home. Congratulations again. I hope to be joining in the new class soon.🙂

I interviewed last week and also got the call this weekend! I was very impressed with the school and am from CO, so am psyched.
I am wondering for those with multiple acceptances, how did you decide on RVU?
I loved the enthusiasm of those involved with the school, new facilities, and small class size, not to mention staying in Colorado.

My main concerns-the provisional status as a new school (what IF something goes wrong-what is the worst case scenario?)
and
the financial aid aspect...I will be paying for everything and already have loans from undergrad/graduate that are carrying over. I'm not sure if I can justify the additional costs when I have other options. I am also interested in the Health Professional Shortage Area Scholarship which is unavailable through RVU.

After the initial excitement, I have to think about everything realistically. Im not looking for answers, I know that ultimately I will make the choice that is best for me. Just curious where others are coming from.

Thanks!

Hey guys! So who else got the email from RVU-COM today about the tuition! Isn't that super exciting!?!? For those who didn't receive it, it said that because they appreciate those students who are giving them a chance and matriculating into their inaugural class, they are going to keep the tuition the same all 4 years on school! That means that our tuition won't go up with inflation! THIS is why I am attending this school next year! They really bend over backwards for you and do things to show how much they appreciate you! I LOVE RVU!!

Yup, I got it, too! That means that for ALL FOUR YEARS our tuition will only be $34,200 per year (resident)! No increase every year!

I also have some amazing stats for you guys - there have been 100 acceptances offered from the school, and only 3 students have decided to attend other schools! Sounds like RVUCOM has become a very desirable choice!

Also, the mean statistics for the accepted students are well above national averages: sci GPA 3.5, overall GPA 3.63, MCAT 26. Sounds like we have some fellow student of the highest caliber!

I can't wait for July!!

We should organize a happy hour to all get to meet each other before then...

Not the greatest news for me...I interview on Friday...my GPA is on target, but my MCAT is low. I do have my 7 years of healthcare experience to fall back on.

If 2/3 of the class is full, I will really have to impress them on the 21st. I am going to try to show them why I too belong in the inaugural class with the rest of you amazing people.

GG, do you know how many of those acceptances are from in states? Hopefully that is an advantage for me to. I truely want and plan on staying in CO to practice medicine.👍

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted so far. I am super excited for all of you!!!!😀

Wish me luck on Friday!:luck::luck::luck::luck:

Hey everyone.....

I set up a facebook group a few weeks back for everyone that has been accepted to RVU and will matriculate (i.e. you have deposited or plan to very soon). Here is the link:

http://unc.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5900777409

so add yourself, and if you aren't on facebook get on there, and we can all start looking for roomates, meeting each other, etc. hope to see everyone in early august!!

I bet by the time a happy hour gets set up you WILL know!

I'll buy the first round! 😉

I know you are right GG...guess that means I get the second round. Then I'm cut off, I'm not a big drinker.:barf:

And also, for those who have interviewed, please fill out the interview feedback section of SDN

Go to "Databases" in the second menu down from the top of the page

choose "Medical School"

on the right hand screen select "Post Feedback" and go from there!

This gives future applicants and interviewers some help and information!
