RVU-COM (Rocky Vista - Colorado) Interview Discussion thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey everyone,

I had my interview yesterday at rvu. The faculty and staff were wonderful.

I got a call from Julie today saying I was accepted.. It was such a great feeling.. My interview was so relaxing.. but I really couldn't tell what they thought of me..

very happy.. oneredtree😀

Well obviously they thought highly of you, or else they wouldn't have offered you a position in the inagural class.👍

Congratulations and I hope to have the opportunity to matriculate with you this coming July.😀

Oh, make sure you fill out the interview feedback (the link is under databases) so that others can learn from your experience. Take care!

ok thanks guys, just sent her an email.

about how long though until you heard back from RVU after your primary was sent off?

Yep, definitely within a couple of weeks.

MikeMD - what's your status?

Gene Genie - are you back from your vacation yet?

no word on the secondary yet. So you guys received it via email?

interesting...

Yeah, it came via email, then you print it and send it back. Are you sure you have all of your LOR's in?

PS, You need to change your name to MikeDO

Yeah GG, where you at girl??? How was your trip?

I'm getting ready to go in three days. I have bronchitis so that is a bummer. 🙁

I need to have my LOR's in before I receive the secondary?? My advisor told me the committee letter was uploaded to virtual evals, but do I have to notify the school about that or do they receive notification? Not sure how that works...

and about my name...I dno why I put the MD in there, I'm not even applying to any MD schools 😉

Hey MikeDO...LOL:laugh:

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you do need your letters. I did. You can always email or call one of the admissions counselors. They are always super helpful and quick to respond. Maybe not today, cause it is a holiday.

Hang in there! 🙂

I'm kinda wonderin if they're open today also. I interviewed Tuesday of last week...and we were told that after the admissions people met on Friday...we'd be getting our admitted/rejected/waitlisted calls either today or Tuesday.

The suspense is killing me😳

Well good luck to you OLYWA.:luck::luck::luck::luck:

I'll be hoping that you get the news that you are looking for sooner rather than later! 👍

What did you think of your time here in Colorado?

Hadn't really been to CO since I was a kid...absolutely amazing scenery👍...a truly beautiful location to attend med school. I was also quite impressed by the staff...they were so welcoming, laid back, and truly wanted to make certain you were comfortable and completely informed about the entire situation involving the application process, financial aid, and the school. I wasn't at all surprised when they told us that most people accepted have already put down their seat deposits...RVU is going to be a very nice place to spend 4 years.

As a WA resident...I am still shootin for PNWU as it is simply home for me...but after my interview I can clearly see that I would be very happy in Denver.

My only hangup with RVU is the funding/loan issue...but I think we're all in the same boat on this one. Not too much ya can do about it...simply one of the sacrifices we have to make to obtain our dream.

Colorado is a beautiful place to be. Lots of outdoor activites and great weather most of the year makes it really awesome. I'm glad you had a great experience with everyone at RVU. I'm not a bit surprised though. They really do have their act together and I really believe they are genuine with their intentions. 👍

I can appreciate that you would like to stay at your home base for school. I'm coming from the same position, but mine is here. I've never been to the Pacific Northwest, but can imagine that it has amazing opportunities to offer.

I also understand and share your position with the funding. BTW, where does PNWU stand with loan status?

Anyway, good luck and keep us informed. My experiences show me that the best outcome for you is what will eventually happen. Take care!

When will the college open up the nursing school? That will allow us to get the federal loans. I think that the private loans are such a disadvantage. It would be great to be able to get federal loans in year 2.

Hey fender...

I'm not 100% sure when the 2nd professional college will be opening up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is before year 3. I guess only time will tell.

Yep, that's what I heard, too - during/end of second year if not sooner. Hopefully, the additional allied health colleges will come through sooner rather than later. 👍

Well...I got an email from the adm. director today...and it looks like I've been waitlisted...which I am very excited about!

MUCH better than a denial...and still leaves the potential for matriculation open. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed...hopin for an admission!

That is good news for you OLYWA...any idea on if RVU ranks and where you fall?

I was emailed...and the email essentially informs ya that they didn't make any definitive decision about you...and they will continue to consider your application as they continue to evaluate applicants.

Not really sure of where I stand...just happy it wasn't a NO!

still no news about receiving my secondary!! I had emailed the adcom last week to ask for the secondary questions to have them ready if/when I received the secondary, and the lady seemed pretty happy to give them to me. Hoping that's a good sign? I don't think my stats are too terrible to not even receive a secondary, are they? should I check in again? They should have my LORs and everything since last week.

I think it's just a matter of volume with regard to applicants (>2200) at this point. Your stats look fine; your strong MCAT offsets your science GPA and your cumulative is on par. You're a good candidate as far as stats go (are your ECs/rec letters there?) so I bet it's a matter of time before you receive the secondary. I'd suggest opening a dialogue with Kerri (if you haven't already, [email protected]), She's a good person to talk to with regard to updates, etcetera. 👍

Just wanted to drop in and say hi to everyone on SDN. I've been following the thread for a while.

Congrats to everyone that has been accepted, and good luck to everyone applying.

So I had my interview yesterday. I couldn't believe they asked me what the 45th mersenne prime was and when I answered incorrectly caned me while I had to whistle "Rocky Mountain High". If you read that and believed it you need help and an interview at Rocky Vista so you can see what really great people they are. I hope I was as good at selling myself as they were at selling the school.

Don't tell my wife but I am in love😍...with the school. I think that the thing that impressed me most was how often faculty stopped by sat down and just shot the breeze with us answering more questions than I could find to ask. I love that the Dean wears a Mickey Mouse watch. The entire office was very accomadating and the interview was very peaceful. I may have had butterflies for breakfast but I had fully digested them as the day went on and felt great about it. I was told they would be letting us know this upcoming teusday so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Rocky Vista will be a great school and I have no concern for its future other than that I be a part of it. Heres to hoping to see the locals getting together next month for a meet and greet.:hardy:

And welcome to the speaking world VQ35

Welcome VQ...are you a prospective student?

And welcome to the speaking world VQ35

Thank you Libo!

This school is going to be amazing! I drove by it today, and it's a building all by itself in the middle of a field. I can see E470 and an American Furniture from chambers road. I can't wait to see what other developments will happen in the future.

Welcome VQ...are you a prospective student?

Thanks paramediclizard.

As of today, I am CLASS OF 2012!!!

I interviewed last week, and heard back from them this week. They are really considerate of each applicant's time.

I'M BACK FROM BELIZE!!!! 😀

Wow! I missed so much while I was gone.

Congrats to all that have received seconday apps/interviewed/and(or) been accepted since I last posted! 👍

I am so excited to hear about how excited everyone is about the school and how much people enjoyed their interview experiences. I, too, feel the same way. 😍

So, for all of you accepted in-staters (and anyone else who wants to fly in for the event) let's plan a date for a meet-and-greet happy hour! I think the the second weekend in February would be a good time - let me know if its not!

Good to be back!

Have fun and be nice to each other while I'm gone!!! I will miss the thread a tiny bit.
Can't wait to meet some of you fine folks when I get back! Take care.

Wow VQ35 the power of posting huh! I wish you the best of luck at RVU I know it will be a fantastic place to learn and be and with some luck I hope to see you there too.

Hey all! So when do in-state people want to get together for a happy hour?!?!?! I can't wait to meet all of you!

You can't leave now! GeneGenie just got back! But I do understand wanting to be in the Caribbean instead of this 10 degree blistering hot weather in Colorado.😎

Seriously! haha. Thanks for the good wishes.

Let's hope you will be there too! Any news from them? Are they your first choice school?

I vote for the second Saturday in February!

Let's try for the 9th of February, a Saturday.
Location: TBD
So far we have
1. GeneGenie
2. VQ35

who else can make it?

I just interviewed Teusday they said an Admissions Comittee will convene on Friday though the Dean will be out (Haha I just typed Dr. Martin then corrected it to Dean Martin and that was the first time I made that association.) and won't be back until the following Monday/Teusday and he has to approve all final admissions. I was told that there would be a call on Tuesday if I get accepted.

Just by looking at the posts I have had on SDN I would say that Yes RVU is my first choice as I don't remember posting about any other schools. I would gladly matriculate there if the blunt trauma injury all over my back and my legs from all the caning they do at the interview subside. By the way Feb 9 works for me if I get a call Jan 29😀

Awesome! I hope you get the call :luck:

I think that the second weekend in February should work for me! We have to figure out where to go! There is the Thin Man...but that can get really crowded. Any other ideas??

I like the Thin Man, too. I also like the Cork House - it's really cozy, they have great drink specials, a good wine list, and yummy food! There are tons of places to go!

I have my interview on Wed. Jan 30th. What was the layout of the day like for those who have interviewed? What types of questions did they ask during the interview. Thanks!!!

You'll find interview day at RVU to be both informative and comfortable. I'd suggest referring to the SDN menu at the top of page for additional information. Path: Databases>Interview Feedback> Medical School>RVU-COM
Other folks will surely post more information here for you.
Best of luck.

hey all, quick question: what made you choose RVU over other schools, being that it is a brand new school (other than this being your only acceptance)?

I have my interview on Wed. Jan 30th. What was the layout of the day like for those who have interviewed? What types of questions did they ask during the interview. Thanks!!!

I just finished my interview on the 22nd and the day was pretty simple. They give you an information packet at the beginning of the day with a list of when interviews are and yours specifically highlighted along with who you will be interviewing with. If you interview is slated for later in the day you will have a financial aid meeting in the first half of the day. There is a TV and some DVD's in the room. I remember there being scrubs and the latest Warren Miller film though we didnt turn on the TV. Staff will come in and talk to you about the school and the progress they are making. The Dean and/or several of the associates deans will stop by and tell you the work they are doing for the school and answer all questions that you can think of to ask.

The whole thing is really meant to put you at ease before your interview time and they do a very good job of it. When the faculty stop by it is very laid back and they often take seats in the room and talk with you about any number of things including the local scene, facts about Denver and skiing. The interview questions did not seem to have any ethical questions or need for strong defense of positions you took in your personal statement or essays. The questions asked of me were more or less the same as in the interview feedback section. Why DO? Sum up what you believe the DO philosophy is. They will reference your essays and personal statements so know them well (as if you didn't already know them backward and forward from rewriting them so many times). Although I don't have an admitance yet it seems to help to be very introspective about why you are choosing not only RVU but also medicine. Answer these questions to yourself and be honest. I like what they said about making sure the shoe fits cause if it doesn't seem comfortable you will hate wearing it for four years.

To answer MikeMD's question: I haven't got my acceptance yet but I really love the staff at RVU and the work that they put into it really shows. Beyond that I think the curriculum they are running is a really great one I appreciate the intergrated approach. As an afterthought the facilities really are going to be state of the art I know new school often equates to new equipment but they seem to have thought so much farther than that. What will be new and helpful in the upcoming years.

MikeMD - I would add that I think the clinicals in the Denver area will be excellent and plentiful (4+ million pop, large, well-funded affiliated hospitals throughout the greater Denver area). Of course as already mentioned, the integrated curriculum modeled after UofC's (cross faculty advisement & program development) and the professional relationships and support in the area are very desirable. The UofC is the only other medical school in the area/region so with that relationship and the added clinical sites, there will be numerous quality opportunities for teaching rotations nearby.

In addition, some of the faculty (who are part of the CO Society of Osteopathic Medicine and Denver Osteopathic Foundation) are very influential in the region and are RVU faculty or are on the RVU board (former KCOM, Touro, NOVA, UNTHSC/TCOM faculty & regional deans). I also like the fact that there is strong D.O. representation and support for RVU-COM in Denver and the surrounding areas.

To sum it up, the most important criteria for me with regard to a med school is the curriculum, faculty, and the clinical years; RVU-COM, for a newer school, is ahead of the curve with respect to those areas.
