I'm new here great site and I'm glad I found it.

Lately I havent been sleeping good and stressing over getting into dental school. My parents constantly pressuring me when i'm going to apply. In all honesty I'm scared to apply cuz I feel like I wont get in and make it through Dental School.

I'm the type of person if I apply schools I want to get in the first try. None of my family members are docs, heck even my parents havent graduated highschool (yet my dad managed to open up his own business 20yrs ago). We are from europe, communisim sucks, thats why we came here.. anyways..

My main concern is that i went to University of the Pacific in Cali for undergrad. Really tough and competitive school which killed my gpa. Chem dept sucked really bad over there, two of my gchem teachers got fired because they did not teach well which is unfair because I WAS IN THOSE CLASSES. Averages on the tests were 40's. Sometimes I wish I went to a cal state near home then UOP because my math/science gpa would of been at least a 3.3.

My gpa is barely a 2.8ish.. I still want to take biochem and histo to raise it up.. I mainly have more C's then I wanted to get. I got C's in G-Chem, one C in bio, C in Physics I. The rest were B's and some A's for bio electives.

I got B+'s in O-Chem I and II though. I'm proud of that because I wanted to make it up for doing bad in g-chem

Do you guys think I have a chance? I have worked and volunteered at a dental office. Dental is truly for me. I am really losing hope

Any help appreciated. I really want to make my parents proud of me. If I dont get into dental school then I really do think its the end of me. Any advice appreciated.

If dentistry is something you truly want in life then there's no reason to not try and apply. It will take a lot of time, stress, blood, lack of sleep, and money to apply but it'll be worth it. Just an advise but you shouldnt post this kind of thread around this time since a lot of people are stressing over admissions and might not reply with butterfly comments. :scared:

"butterfly comments" is copy righted by me.

Hey! Don't lose hope!! Look at some other threads...there are others in similar situations. When did you plan to apply...2007? C's aren't too bad...but i'd give it another year at least to raise your GPA. You will get a chance to explain your grades (if needed) in your personal statement and interview. I think you will be fine!! If you are committed to dentistry don't let anyone or anything change your mind. One more word of advice...make SURE you get your application in during the middle of may...so start working on it...before then to have everything ready. I made the mistake of getting mine in a little late. With a lower GPA then you'd like, you will have significantly higher chances of getting into dental school if you apply early (May). But definitley don't give up...! I'm sure your parents are proud of you thusfar...and will be even prouder when you get into dental school! Good Luck!

You probably won't get into dental school. I'de save my $ and not even apply if I were you.

hehe, just kidding!

Improve your application in every way and kick the DAT's a$$! If you get 22+ on the DAT, they will know you are no dummy. Don't neglect your GPA though, keep taking courses and raise it as high as possible. Do not underestimate how competitive it is nowadays. Give it your all and you can do it.

stressing will do you no good. take some other classes, raise your gpa. you need to have atleast above 3.0 c.gpa to be competetive. it's unfortunate you had two bad gen chem teachers, however its one more excuse. my words may sound hard, but its the turth. get working on the dat. buy some books. and as PDizzle said, with a below 2.8 gpa, you need to get 22 on the DAT to get in.

Well said.

It takes a lot to get into dental school these days, for some its a bit more. You gotta make up for all those C's. Stay focused.

rock the DAT (20+ across the board) or your 2.8 GPA will sink your ship fast (i mean, a 3.5 wasn't even safe this cycle). also, you mustt mustt apply early (may/june). finally, tell your parents to get off your back already. make it your dream, not theirs, or you will be miserable with their decisions.

If you're applying with barely a 2.8, you're gonna need more than just 20 across the board. Maybe you'll need 23+?

Edit: It's totally true that even 3.5s have a hard time getting in.

I just recalculated my gpa and its 3.3 with everything.

I have a question do these courses count towards my science GPA?? These are Bio electives.

Marine Bids and Mammals: A-
Ecology: B-
Comparitive Ecology: B
Undergrad Research: A
Evolution: B

These classes mentioned above are ALL bio classes. Do they count towards my science gpa??

In that case my math/science gpa is 2.9.

I can raise it to 3.0+ gpa this summer when I take Cell Bio and Histology. Hope that is enough to make it with a decent dat score.

Do you guys think I should apply this year for 2007 eventhough my gpa is not at a 3.0 right now?? It will be within 6 months I hope.

Also I received a C- in General Biology I. This was my worst grade in undergrad. Should I retake it or leave it the way it is?? I do not have time to retake things.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I don't think a C- is passing. At least at my school it isn't. You might want to retake it.

I have a 3.0 and 20 on DATs, yet got in by applying in July. Show that you are determined, passionate and you might have a chance.

What school did you get into?

First of all go to dental school for you only, not your parents... they already lived their life... now it is your turn. Secondly, Dental schools look at a lot of things before they decide on a candidate. You still have to take Biochem, which I recommend you take before you apply it just makes your life easier. I did not take Histo, and I am doing fine in the class, so if you can take it if you can't do not worry about it, not unless the school you are applying to really wants you to take it. Third, you are still to take the DAT study your brains off, and score well, to increase your chances. I'm sure after taking biochem, and histo your gpa will look better, but they also consider avg science gpa. Make sure you observe or shadow a dentist to show the school you apply to, you are interested in the career, and also for your own benefit ...to make sure it is something you wan't to do. I did not have all A's in my science classes, but I made sure i was well rounded in everything else and did ok in the DAT........ So apply, it will not hurt do not get in your own way, have faith in yourself. You will never know unless you try.
I am in my first year of Dental school and I love it! it is hard work, but that makes you a better student.
Good luck!!!!!

Hey all. I'm new here and I tried to find the right place to ask my question, but got tired of searching...and just figured this would be close enough. I'm applying this summer for admission in the fall of 2007. I've got a pretty decent GPA - 3.98, but I haven't taken the DAT yet. I'm in OChem1 right now and taking Ochem2 in June, and plan to take the DAT in mid-July. With my GPA, what is the minimum DAT I need to get? Any pointers on how to get a good DAT score the first try? I'm looking at Nova and Alabama and maybe UT at Memphis. Do these dental schools expect you to have the pre-reqs finished when you apply? I've got more than half, but not quite all yet...Thanks... 🙂

id say if you get an 18 on the DAT, which is pretty easy if you study, youll be fine. id shoot for 20 to be safe though. dont worry about it too much, your gpa is the most important. dont forget to apply early, you can submit your app before you take the DAT. i would submit it as soon as you are done with ochem 2.

gsrthomas, you're not the only one in this situation... i'm exactly in your position GPA wise, cause chemistry as raped me all thru college and bios has been constantly keeping my GPA up, and family wise, i was born here but my father is italian and my mom is nigerian and they never went to college, yet my father makes A LOT OF MONEY working for a french multinational company..
i havent taken the DATs yet and so i'm s***ting my pants about it, what i'm going to do is take the KAPLAN course and some good friends advised to take the DATachiever, which will help rais your scores real high...
i'm stressing too because i got a lot riding on getting in, family, personal interest ect....
in the next 3 months i've got to get letters of reccomendation from 3 sci profs, a couple of non sci profs, a LOR from work, a LOR from a dentist i still need to start shadowing, study for the DAT, take the DAT, ACE THE DAT, send transcripts and application letters....

dont despair and ask for more support from family and friends and as they say GIT HERR DONE!!!!!!!!!

we'll make it it just takes determination and a bit of luck...
