I took a gap year straight after high school doing AmeriCorps, took 5 years to finish undergrad (switched from education to physiology major). I worked full-time the first three years, then got aid + scholarships my last 2 years that brought me down to part-time (20-30 hrs/week). Not a lot of clubs/leadership involvement, nor very productive research as I was only able to have the time for it during my final year.

I initially planned to become a teacher because I wanted to empower marginalized children, but fell into healthcare during the pandemic as a caregiver. This coincided with an immediate family member's health decline and passing due to a cardiac complication. Ultimately I decided to go into medicine because it united the aspects of teaching and caregiving I found most rewarding, allows me to care for people across the lifespan, and there are opportunities for advocacy in this profession that have far-reaching impacts. I have a strong passion for working with underserved communities, largely influenced by my own life experiences and time spent working at a school where many of my students came from low-income, refugee, and migrant backgrounds. I also have an interest in global health (I grew up going to a folk healer and only went to a doctor when it was life-or-death), though it's hard to make this a focal point in my application when my ECs are mostly teaching-based.

So far my school list includes UW, WSU, UNLV, and UNR (all schools where I would qualify for in-state tuition). I qualified for fee assistance so I will likely apply to reach schools that offer generous aid (Albert Einstein, Alice Walton). Please help me with my school list 🙂

Thank you so much in advance, and please let me know if there's anything I can help clarify!
