My stats:

Cgpa 3.5, sgpa 3.27, MCAT 25: 8, 7, 10; Retake pending.

ECs:
40 hrs shadowing DOs & MDs. Observed OMT.
1-2 yrs Hospital volunteering, Lots of Teaching/tutoring experience.
Years of non-medical community service with underserved populations.
International & public health mission trips & multiple leadership club positions.
1 yr working with doctors in public health/community setting.
Strong theme in application of public health, serving underserved populations, etc.

LORS: clinical letter from DO, character letter from MD, & pretty decent science & committee LORs

State of residence- IL

What I’m worried about: somewhat downward grade trend- Lots of family & financial problems accumulated last two years of undergrad, and I ended up doing bad (B-/C+s) in about 3 or 4 higher level science classes. Oh and the mcat isn’t too great either, and I’m not sure how the second one went.

Based on all that, please suggest schools for me. I’m thinking of applying to about 25-30 schools, so maybe it’s better to list schools that I shouldn’t apply to? Not sure- any help would be appreciated! Also, can someone clarify exactly what it means to apply broadly- meaning I should be picking multiple safety schools along with reach schools?

Let me know if more details are needed. Thank you in advance! 😀

Your first MCAT was fine for DO. Let's hope you did not crash and burn for the second one (I'm sure you didn't).

I applied to 30 but from the advice I got so far it was way too many. You have really awesome stats (perhaps the lower sGPA might be a bit odd but I'm sure it's not a big deal since it's 3.2+). So if you get 29+ you could do maybe a few MDs and a fair amount of DOs. If you were only set on DO in the first place then id say 15 is a good amount of schools!

Good luck!

I agree 15 should do the trick with those stats. And good luck on that second MCAT. If you do get a 29+ balanced I also recommend to throw in about 5 MDs you would consider going to and are within reason (low tier schools preferably).

its not how many; its where you apply. To apply broadly means to apply to many teirs and geographic locations. i.e not just the mid-west or not simply the "best" schools.
Do your research and apply to maybe 8 schools your numbers fit into as their average, another 5-6 that are below your average, and a couple reach schools. Your numbers are on the lower end, so you may end up with just two teirs. My advice from applying (and getting accepted) with similar #s is to focus on the lower teirs - I got nothing from many costly apps to UNECOM, NYCOM, ROWAN, etc

If you got a 29, you could try your luck at your state MD schools and maybe some of the new schools. With that being said, don't get your hopes up. <3.3sgpa with a downward trend is not promising for MD.

For DO, if you go about 10-15 schools, I think you have a fair shot.

I have similar numbers what schools would suggests (besides the new COMs)?

I agree so much.

I can't tell you how many times I see this: people with not great, but average numbers post here and ask for feedback as they are getting ready to reapply. I ask them where they applied this past year...their answer? a small handful of schools like NSU, CCOM, Western, AZCOM, PCOM, etc. Too many people shoot themselves in the foot by not doing their homework on where/how they need to apply.

I would say don't apply to MSUCOM (I'm a MI resident). I believe your GPA and MCAT is a bit under average for them. But you have some great EC's. Good luck my friend!

ACOM
ATSU (AZ)
AZCOM
CUSOM
KCOM
LECOM (ALL)
LMU
NYCOM
PNWU
PCOM (BOTH)
VCOM
WVSOM
VCOM-SC
PCOM-GA
Pikesville
Novacom (if you ace the MCAT)
RVU

Edit: I didnt initially post this, but this list was recommended by Goro...hence the credit for this list goes all to Goro since I have similar states (with a pending MCAT)

You'll get plenty of interviews, it's how you explain the downward trend that will make or break you. You'll need to show that the problems are behind you.

Based on the 25, skip TUCOM-NY, TUCM-CA and CCOM. If you can get the second MCAT into the high 20s, then you're good to go anywhere.

I cannot recommend LUCOM. UNECOM has a regional bias, as does TCOM. Start with KCUMB and MUCOM, two schools I have a high regard for. Your safety schools will be the newest schools.
