lol...I can't believe I'm posting this...but why not? 😳

Ok, I'm ordering an ultrascope...is it too lame to put Dr. X on the engraving...I'm obviously not at all a doctor yet, but will be....anyway is that strange? I guess I could always not engrave it and then send it back and have it done when I graduate....

I won't say yes or no...but I do feel it would merit an eyebrow-raise and/or eye-roll... 🙂

lol..yeah, this is sort of my census on the proportion of people that would laugh at me...It think it will seem kinda dumb in school, but I guess I'm trying to figure out if it would seem dumb after I graduate...the scope's life certainly will be well past the 4 years

I would just put your name.
Thats what all the med students do with their steths.

Once you graduate you can get a new plate put on.

oh yeah, I think it's fine after you graduate!

The probaly with ultrascope is that they have these plastic type heads and the engraving is right into the plastic (thus no real ability to change anything).

I'm going to ask if I can just put my last name and then add Dr. and DVM later but I'm thinking the way the engraving machine works that might be a no-go.

My friend suggested geting the Dr./DVM and then putting a band-aid or a sticker over it...then after 4 years you get to "unveil" it and be all silly about it.

"I went to school for 4 years just so I could take this sticker off"

can you say 'turbo geek'? I'll bet you're going to get your lab coat monogrammed too....

getting your lab coat monogrammed, and your stethoscope engraved (especially with 'Dr' before you've yet to even do a DAY of vet school) is just not something students do.... actually, some students do it, but you might as well paint a giant target on your forehead.

honestly........

They allow you to put the veterinary caduceus on there, which I think is neat...but I also think you only get one chance to engrave it which is where the problem is possibly. If they can do it later then I'll wait b/c it really is a little strange....

The backpack I had for years destroyed itself, and I breifly considered getting "DVM" or "VET" as the monogram on the new one, but decided quickly that was way too goofy so maybe there is some hope for me. 😛

Is it strange? IMHO, yes. Why does it have to say DVM anyway? Are you going to forget what you went to school for? Are the people that work with you going to forget you're a doctor? 🙂

Where are you headed to school, Horsey?

I just liked the caduceus...the rest is more identification and basically a "why not" factor....Have you seen the ultrascopes? I just think it looks neat (not why I'm going with ultrascope though)

Don't worry, I'm not going to LSU so I won't be there for you to point and laugh at with my scope. 😎

Yes, I've seen and used the Ultrascope...and personally don't care for them.

aww Horsey, i dont think you're a geek. i'll probably want to do all the same things as you once i get in. remember, im the one reading books already 😛

lol, i guess Im going to be lame, too... I was going to get mine engraved as an identification thing, just my name, not the Dr or VMD. I thought it would be a nice permanent identification as opposed to the pet tags which could easily be removed if the scope decides to walk off. I'll have to rethink this now  don't want to be lame in the fall...

Lots of people get tags for their scopes (even dog tags with their names engraved). I do not think getting your name engraved on your scope is dorky, but I wouldn't get DVM, VMD or any other letters put on....

i'll definitely roll my eyes at anyone in first year who has "Dr" engraved on anything let alone a stethescope. just calm down, we've got some time before we can call ourselves that.

A friend bought me a Littman Master Classic II. I got an engraved PetsMart dog-tag to attach to it, but I was wondering if anyone knew where you could get the snap-on engraved tags for them?

now, see quaggi, it depends what comes after the Dr. part.

I mean, yeah, Dr. (your name here) is pretty lame, but

Dr. of Lurve 😍

is not so much lame as silly. And memorable. So when someone, er, "borrows" it, everyone will know who it really belongs to.

And much more professional than, say, buying everything in lime green and painting purple polka dots on it. 😀

...And also no way to clean out those engraved grooves, unless you're going to scrub it out with a toothbrush between patients. I mean, OK, the engraving is on top and hopefully your hands aren't *that* dirty, but what about examining feedlot animals, or puppies in a kennel (who *always* seem to be covered in poo)? What about a neglected animal that comes in with fleas and ringworm and mange and whatever else? All that ends up in your engraving. Blech. Sorry, I guess I'm just feeling pessimistic and looking for the down-side of everything today, I dunno. 🙂 But I get the heebie-jeebies when I see someone touch the ear pieces of their stethoscope after handling animals of questionable cleanliness, too.

Speaking of stethoscopes, I need one for my animal care class this year. What would you guys recommend?

Ranger, there have been a few discussions on this before (do a search). But most people recommend you try as many brands and types as you can before making a choice - everyone favours a different stethoscope.

I personally like my Littman Master Cardiology, but some people find it too heavy and don't like the single diaphragm. Since I use it a LOT and get really useful information from it, I don't mind carrying the weight. I also hear well with Ultrascopes. (I'm hearing impaired, so choosing a stethoscope was a big deal).

Alright, thanks! I read the search results and you must be getting sick of typing out stethoscope advice.

I guess I'll try out various ones at the clinic I tech at now and see if that reveals a preference.
