So, I will shortly start working as a Medical Scribe at one of the hospitals near by. The thing I am worried about is that the person I am scheduled to scribe for is a NP and not a physician. I do not have a problem with NP's or the work they (at least not yet since I do not know how they interact with the actual physicians). I am worried that since my experience is no going to be with an actual physician, it will negatively impact my chances. I am really banking on my EC's and I am worried that the fact I will not be working for the physician, it will be discounted. Maybe I am being neurotic, anyway, thanks for the advice.

Has anyone else experienced this? Do you guys have any advice?

I work with a NP currently. I think this really depends. Where will you be working? Do you have the opportunity to work with physicians? I would say that any clinical experience is good experience but maybe some of the more knowledgeable people here can give you better advice.

If I were you, I would contact the program and ask to scribe for a physician instead. Explain yourself and say why.

Do you have any clinical experience at all? If not, then maybe you should keep this. If you already have clinical experience, ask to scribe for a physician and if you can't, I would just find some other place.

Also, I don't think this would negatively impact anything. Some clinical experience is preferred over none. But still, that experience should be with a doctor because that's what you want to be.

Correct.

I don't think it should matter. You're not there to learn-- you're there to be a low cost chart monkey. The importance of scribbling to applying to medical school is getting an in-depth look (and hopefully appreciation of) clinical practice. Yeah you're going to pick up some lingo and scattered knowledge, but nobody on the admission committee is giving you points because you know what NPO means. Besides, you could totally spin it to your advantage. Like it or not MLPs are the future.

I'd be a little scared if I had an applicant that was "really banking on their EC's" and concurrently worrying about this. It sounds more like there are other aspects of your application that need improvement over this...

I am working in Orthopedics. I was supposed to work with a physician, but some of the other scribe schedules did not line up with the NP. Mine did, so I got switched over.

I am currently volunteering about 4 hours per week at my local hospital's ED. Been doing that about 6 months. I plan on continuing volunteering at the hospital for a couple more years.

I am working on my other aspects. However, in my starting college years I screwed up heavily. I am working on this, as I am currently getting A's, but that takes time to repair. I am working on it and doing well. I also know that having strong EC's will also help because of my academic record being a bit lower.
