Seniors, time to help!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well i think i have earned my place as a Senior here, so i think i should write my story too 😉
I had my share of Ups and downs in this journey . I wont be able to give details, but it still might stir up the jar for some people, who are on the edge of lack of motivation !
My goal of giving Nbde and settling in Usa was kind of pre-decided by me . So i opened my books for part 1 in internship only. But as expected , those days weren't productive enough. So you can say i started my real preparation after graduation. Anyways, i graduated in June, 2010 and took my exam date for November. I worked real hard for 2 months. Full input, with full dedication. But then the whole load of problems came in from all sides.. Family problems, Big Big Big Personal problems .... All that !! and alongside breakup, and all other looser problems like that... Peace of mind was to be found no where.. Anyways , jist is that everything got jumbled up...So the end result, i couldnt study at all !!
So after like 2 months, i got my **** together, picked up the books again.. Started studying again .. I took the date in January. But the problems started aggravating again, even more severe! I wish i could tell. So i decided to just shut down myself from whole social life. Phones, facebook , and friends , all OFF! 😳 I decided i gotta utilise this negative motivation and use it productively.. So finally i took my exam in February !!
I got 87.. I know its not such a good score. And i could have done better. But i was ok with what i got !! Not everyone can get 90 above. So from that very day, i knew that my score isnt that much , and i need to pull up my socks and work hard on my resume .. I gave my toefl and got my gpa. Final Stats

87 / 113 / 3.63 ( not so bad eh? )

So i went back home .. Problems were awaiting for me at my home college.. I wanted to apply to cali univs.. But my principal had some grudge against me .. I was nearing my deadlines for cali , and i need LOR's . But that guy took 48 precious days to give me Lors.. So i was kinda screwed for Cali and few other univs too .. But i still completed my application process ..
Then the long and torturous journey of " Application complete email --> You have been REJECTED " started.. As i was late in applying , they dont consider the borderline applicants much ..Keep this in mind.

I waited for 4-5 months.. HORRIBLE WAIT !! I even went off from SDN , coz i thought , i dont deserve to guide people , coz i have myself acheived nothing.. I used to get private messages, asking me where i was, and all other "need help" kind of msgs.. even the gem of a person above " Impacted mind" asked about my whereabouts 😉 Btw Thanks mate !!

So during the wait, i knew what i had to do ... IMPROVE RESUME
So i used all my resources to score a job as a lecturer in a college. ( low side to this job - No pay, 4 hours from my home , college located in a backward area with no social fun, had to stay in boys hostel 😛 ) .. But in any case, this needed to be done to gain TEACHING EXPERIENCE !! .. then i gave presentation in state conference... And then i started working on a paper !! .. But anyways ..I did what i could !! I kept sending my updated resume to universities.. Then my prayers, and my hard work was reciprocated.. I got an interview call from NYU !! First and the Only call !! Stakes were high !! :xf:

But i dont know what got into me.. I was never nervous.. I just went to US .. I dont know whether i was positive or negative, i just know that i had a clear mind.. I was living in the present.. I was smiling all the way , till the day of interview...And i was smiling even more during the interview... And in the end Smile turned into Laughter , I got accepted !!!! 100 % score in interviews.. lol... 1 out of 1 clear !! 😀
So i dont know know whether anyone would read this or not, coz its quite long and a bit boring 😉 but still i needed to vent this out !!!
So my two cents on
Preparation - Work hard.. Everyone has problems .. Set a goal , run towards it with all your will , and crush anything and everything on your way !!!

Applications - As everyone says patience is the key .. But dont just sit back and wait. Do something . keep in mind the caapid application, the column where they want you to write your WORK EXPERIENCE .. See all the categories , then you ll know what they require, and then start working according to it...
Everyone has clinical experience these days, and observerships too ...so you need to know where you can get the cutting edge.. Like "Teaching experience, Presentations, Publications, and Research" ..also the voluntary and community work .. Analyse and decide what among these you can add to your profile..

Interviews - After you got the call , then its all about your communication skills in east coast, and your hand skills in west ..Work on them , if you feel that you are lagging in some areas.. Last piece of advice to everyone .. Just my opinion .. When going for an interview, dont show them that you are already perfect in everything, and you are better than the things being taught there .. Show them that you are here to learn, and you have the capability of accepting authority and learn from everyone... Show the LEARNER ATTITUDE rather than BOAST about the things you can do .. But on the other hand, dont undersell yourself..Tell em what you have done, and what you can do, in a polite way.. Be confident.

In the end ... Leave everything to God !!
If you ever need help, i ll always be here somewhere 😀 If this is what you want to achieve, give it everything you've got !!!

Great...job bhavi....dont worry ur an awesome mentor....stay active on sdn and help others...all this adds up in the end......cheers

Here's the long version in case anyone's interested.
I know the first question I will get is stats - I’ve never posted my stats on this forum before, but my feel-good hormones are getting the better of me - so here.
NBDE 1 - 79 ( 80 the first time)
NBDE 2 - Pass
Toefl - 118

The first time I took NBDE I screwed up , did not study as much as I should have. The second time, I did prepare well, but was just bad timing - was 8 months pregnant at the time , and just a week before the exam had been in the hospital for a kidney infection ( ah ! the joys of pregnancy!) Between the frequent rest room breaks, the overwhelming tiredness and the achy body , I had to read each question multiple times just to understand what is being asked ! ( so much fun ! - NOT !) I will spare you the gross details and just say that I passed - though there is not much consolation to be had from being stuck with a 79.

Since getting here to the US, I’d been working as a Dental Assistant and volunteering at 2 non-profit organizations. I had to quit working full time in 2009 and switch to part time in 2009 after I had our first child. Had to stop working completely in late 2009 after the doctor put me on bedrest for my second pregnancy - It was during this ‘bed rest’ that I had to re take NBDE 1 . I’d registered for the test before all of this and March was the last I could take it before forfeiting the fee. There is a lesson to be learnt here - DO NOT re/take if you are less than 100% . But I guess this is no longer an issue since there are no scores and can't retake anyway if you pass 🙂 .
2011 - During the interview at UCD, the interviewers kept asking me about the ‘hole’ in my work history from 2009 - 2011. And after finding out that I was waitlisted because my paper application wasn’t strong enough, I started working and volunteering again. Yes - We spent more on childcare than what I was making as an assistant. And the guilt of leaving my kids with strangers was an extra ‘perk’.

After the waitlist ,I was obsessing about the waitlist status and I found that “chilledtooth” was obsessing too - and finding that I wasn’t the only one going nuts helped me rein in the ‘crazy’ a little bit 🙂 . So thank you, “chilledtooth” .

In addition to this I completed an externship at the nearest Dental school, and got an opportunity to work on a literature project with a faculty member here. Also completed another article ( not with the faculty) and submitted to the Dental Assistant Journal. Also completed as many CE courses I could afford .

And worked and reworked my personal statement. Every year. My essay in 2012 in different from 2011 or 2009. I would spend days writing and show it to my husband for feedback and he’d return it with writings all over - idea not elaborated, or too cliche , or need example to back this up or something. There are times I wanted to hit him over the head with my skillet for being so nit picky and even screamed at him once - do you have any frigging idea how much time and how much work I did on the essay you casually tossed in the trash? and he said - “Do you want to get in or not? If I can find faults in your essay, What do you want to bet the adcom will too?” Gulp ! I realized he was right and while I was still plenty mad at him for being a perfectionist, I always reworked my essays without questioning him and I believe I and my statement are better for it.

For a long time I told myself I wasn’t good enough, do not have what it takes. Even now there are times when a little voice says - “The schools made a mistake. It was a fluke.” It is very hard to ignore it. This is where your support system kicks in .Find someone/people who will tell you you can do it ! I am truly grateful for my support system- couldn’t have done it otherwise. I know I will need them again once I start school and I am glad I have them. ! For those of you who got in the first time around - not talking to you . ( not saying you did not work hard- of course you did. just saying you don’t know what it is like) .For the rest of us, when every rejection letter feels like a personal failure and the wait for interviews never ending. And each time a thread pops up on SDN - “ I got interview at XYZ , did you” and you didn't - something dies inside. If it weren’t for those posting those threads, we would never know anything and that is worse, ( so please don’t stop) but it certainly feels like someone stabbed you in your heart. I know - been there for years.

I know me saying I got into UMN when the interviews are not over yet will have that effect on some of you, and I apologize for it. It is not my intention to cause you more pain than you are in already. I am trying to tell you that there is light at the end of the tunnel. So chin up and go forward.

Applied to all 3 schools in March- VCU and UCD were almost at the end of their application cycle and UMN was just starting. Completed CAAPID in April because my interviews were in May and I would have no time to do any of this then.

Prep for bench test - could not afford any of the prep courses, so bought the equipment and practiced at home. Every so often I would take my completed preps to a dentist I worked for to get feedback. I practiced for 1month in 2011 for UCD and one month is 2012 for UCD and VCU. And I did see posts asking “should I use loupes” . And I agree with noradent that - “ it is the prep that matters”. But if you have the time, practice with loupes - it makes you look more compatible with the american system. Remember - they are evaluating you based on those 1-2 days alone. A lot depends on their perception of you.

VCU interview - the interview itself was okay - by this I mean I don’t remember saying anything stupid . But the practical exam was long and hard. The dentsim - as a VCU senior put is “‘like a video game”. But the kicker is , when you future is hanging over you, it is hard to take it like that . Although now I realize he was right ! Dr. Gotteleib and all of the VCU family were awesome and tried to make it as comfortable as possible, but it still is exhausting. The school’s awesome and I loved the size of the program and the integrated curriculum and Dr. Gotteleib’s presentation explains it well. And the students seemed to love it and had some great advice to give. The pride they have in their school was palpable . Go Rams ! After the bench test, all I could think of were the mistakes I made . The former students kept saying even if you mess up one or two, keep going - it is the total that counts, not the individual components - If I’d only listened to them, it would be a lot less stressful ! But the thought that my future was on the line kept me from taking it easy. 🙂 . Richmond is an old city with a lot of charm and it was really pretty. I was there in May, so the weather was great as well.

If you would like more details of VCU interview - check “toothfairyqueen” ‘s posts - she is a wealth of information, more so when it comes to all things VCU ! - A shout out to you and noradent - Thank you ! Also to those like Hope 4 and Bhavi4all and so many more ( the names escape my memory now- but you know who you are! ) - Thank you ! I've been on SDN since '07 and have followed pretty much every thread (except canadian ones) and tried to follow the suggestions the best I can. So thank you !

And then came UMN - The interviews were very casual , it was more of a conversation . Dr. Berthold is an astute man - BS him and you can see it in his expression! And do not be afraid to have an opinion . During my interview I got a little too comfortable and offered my opinion on something he said - As soon as the words left my mouth, my eyes widened and my brain whispered, “Oh Crap ! How many times do I have to remind you to keep your mouth shut?!” Then Dr. Berthold said “ I’m glad you have an opinion” and I said - “Always!!!!!” . (My brain said to me- “ What in the world? Can’t you just let it be? ...Gulp...) . The point I’m trying to make is have an opinion, maybe even say it, but try not to go overboard like I did !

I had 2 more one-on-one interviews. All 3 interviewers asked questions relevant to where the conversation was going. But they were writing stuff down and it gave me the impression that they had some things they were hoping to find out and they were writing what they think as the interview progressed. All of the interviewers had excellent ‘antenna’ for BS and canned answers. I started on one canned answer to interviewer 2 and I could see his expression change and I had to say something else I thought up right then. ( *oh crap) . In light of the acceptance, I like to think I recovered fairly well 🙂 . I loved that Dr. Berthold’s presentation included how the application process worked and information about Minneapolis , in addition to the regular stuff about the school and the program. Loved the school, and the program. Also the discussion on Dental therapy was interesting. Would be interesting to see how the effectiveness translates in the real world. The tour was given by a regular student, not an International student - subtle reminder of how the program is fully integrated and no difference is made once ‘the 10’ enter the 3rd year class. Minneapolis - St.Paul was beautiful - with lakes and parks and that old world charm . Also the city seemed to have a lot of theatres. I was there in May and there was none of that snow, so I guess that skewers the perception a bit 🙂.

UCD - Having been here before I wasn’t as panicky as last year . The panel made me a little nervous only because any stupid things I say will be amplified by 4 . Was telling myself - do not talk too much ( the length of this post should be proof of how good I am at that!) . Dr. Towne is an amazing human being and actually remembered I was waitlisted !! I can’t think of any other program director paying that kind of personal attention to a waitlisted candidate ( read as not-good-enough candidate) ! And I wasn’t even in the program. I actually thought the bench test went alright, but guess not. Already knew it was a great school, and this was the only separate program i’ve seen ( in my limited interview experiences) and while talking to a current student found that the separate program had some interesting plus points. The other students share the same fear and experience you are, and the faculty is aware that you are new. Also they don’t have too many masters programs, which again can be argued both ways. But for ISP program, that’s a plus - you have a chance of seeing a lot more special cases. And best of all, the program is only 24 months and not very expensive! (well, compared to other programs in 😀. Still is a lot of money! ) . Anyway, this is where my relationship with UCD ends - I was waitlisted. And having been on the waitlist last year, I won’t hold my breath. Very few give up the chance to be here.

And as for where I’m going - I don’t know yet. Before the acceptances came, my husband and I decided that weather will not be a factor in the decision. That the decision would be based on where I think I would fit in best. Actually I never expected either one to accept me - I mean they only have to accept 10 each from a pool of candidates with insanely good resumes and hand skills . And UMN just started their interviews ! I thought the odds were more in my favor at UCD - I guess not ! Life’s weird like that ! So that leaves two very comparable programs. They are both small programs, both integrated, and both totally awesome ! I am very honored and very humbled to have been accepted to two amazing schools.

Congratulations aspiringdentist. That is simply awesome I really liked your perseverance. I wish I could do that too and some day get into the D-school.

@bds09 - thank you ! you will , just stick with it and tell yourself that good things come to those who wait. and Good luck !

During my interview I got a little too comfortable and offered my opinion on something he said - As soon as the words left my mouth, my eyes widened and my brain whispered, "Oh Crap ! How many times do I have to remind you to keep your mouth shut?!" Then Dr. Berthold said " I'm glad you have an opinion" and I said - "Always!!!!!" . (My brain said to me- " What in the world? Can't you just let it be? ...Gulp...) . The point I'm trying to make is have an opinion, maybe even say it, but try not to go overboard like I did !

I had 2 more one-on-one interviews. All 3 interviewers asked questions relevant to where the conversation was going. But they were writing stuff down and it gave me the impression that they had some things they were hoping to find out and they were writing what they think as the interview progressed. All of the interviewers had excellent ‘antenna' for BS and canned answers. I started on one canned answer to interviewer 2 and I could see his expression change and I had to say something else I thought up right then. ( *oh crap) . In light of the acceptance, I like to think I recovered fairly well 🙂 . I loved that Dr. Berthold's presentation included how the application process worked and information about Minneapolis , in addition to the regular stuff about the school and the program. Loved the school, and the program. Also the discussion on Dental therapy was interesting. Would be interesting to see how the effectiveness translates in the real world. The tour was given by a regular student, not an International student - subtle reminder of how the program is fully integrated and no difference is made once ‘the 10' enter the 3rd year class. Minneapolis - St.Paul was beautiful - with lakes and parks and that old world charm . Also the city seemed to have a lot of theatres. I was there in May and there was none of that snow, so I guess that skewers the perception a bit 🙂.

UCD - Having been here before I wasn't as panicky as last year . The panel made me a little nervous only because any stupid things I say will be amplified by 4 . Was telling myself - do not talk too much ( the length of this post should be proof of how good I am at that!) . Dr. Towne is an amazing human being and actually remembered I was waitlisted !! I can't think of any other program director paying that kind of personal attention to a waitlisted candidate ( read as not-good-enough candidate) ! And I wasn't even in the program. I actually thought the bench test went alright, but guess not. Already knew it was a great school, and this was the only separate program i've seen ( in my limited interview experiences) and while talking to a current student found that the separate program had some interesting plus points. The other students share the same fear and experience you are, and the faculty is aware that you are new. Also they don't have too many masters programs, which again can be argued both ways. But for ISP program, that's a plus - you have a chance of seeing a lot more special cases. And best of all, the program is only 24 months and not very expensive! (well, compared to other programs in 😀. Still is a lot of money! ) . Anyway, this is where my relationship with UCD ends - I was waitlisted. And having been on the waitlist last year, I won't hold my breath. Very few give up the chance to be here.

And as for where I'm going - I don't know yet. Life's weird like that ! So that leaves two very comparable programs. They are both small programs, both integrated, and both totally awesome ! I am very honored and very humbled to have been accepted by two amazing schools.
Congratulations aspiringdentist on getting accepted to 2 very competitive and selective programs!!
Your story is very inspirational. Good luck in all your future endeavors!!

@Crown Prep, @bhaviforall and BigSmiles , castudies- Thank you ! ( adding here because I do not want to bump this thread unnecessarily)

wow aspiringdentist, that's alot to go through....good for you and congrats on the acceptance!

Congrats aspiring dentist... Well done !!! Have a good life!

I have just completed my B.D.S this year(April), and I don't have any clinical work experience, research experience, no experience related to dentistry. As I have seen many posts here, they suggests that any master's degree or research experience is really required to get into international dentist program as now it is just pass/fail system. I have two options:
1) Enrolling in a 2 year Masters in Administrative Science in Global Health program at Fairleigh Dickinson university( starting in January 2013)
2) Enrolling in a Clinical Research Associate Certificate program(1 year) at Oxford College, Toronto starting in Sept, 2012.
I am highly confused that which program would be of more help for this year caapid application.(atleast I will be able to put something on my caapid application even after just enrolling into any of these programs because I have seen few people who were just initially enrolled in Master's program and then left that program after getting into IDP dds program)( I am mainly left with Nyu, Boston, Temple, Colarado). I am also planing for clinical shadowing in some clinic here in Canada next month, once I finish my Part1.
Can some senior member guide me with this who might have gone through similar stage, also Is there any dental school which prefers fresh dental graduates?
Thanks in advance

Regarding NBDE Part 2:

Regarding Part 2, I didnt use board busters but mosby review is the standard book, know it thorough.... Do join qbankdmd.com for great questions especially in patient management... Read the ADA syllabus well , see what topic of each subject carries how many marks... you will be surprised that basic topics of diagnosis and tmt planning form the majority marks, rest detailed topics are less asked. I even used First aid Q and A book (its not the review book, just a qbank) and had read the dental decks once. Mainly practice mosby cd, qbankdmd.com, released papers.. before starting anything, read the ADA syllabus given in the NBDE part 2 candidate guide very well....

Tips to remember always:
1. Believe youself and keep going until you reach where YOU want. Dont compromise. Have patience. You have no friend in this admissions process, no one will tell you or adivce you.. You'll have to FIND ADVICE on the internet.

2. if you have to find anything, or have a stupidest doubt on bench test or interview or any exam: use GOOGLE, thats your best friend, SDN ADVISES COME LAST. modify the search words in google till you find your answers, believe me GOOGLE KNOWS ALMOST EVERYTHING REQUIRED TO GET ADMISSION INTO IDP.

3. apply early..early means june end.. you should finish all supplemental applications by mid- june.. You need to have almost one month to write yourself an excellent personal statement. Make sure your letter of evaluations express your true value, so choose your evaluators with a notion to represent the clinical dentistry. I chose a pedodontist, an oral surgeon and a general dentist as my evaluators.

4. spent as much time on the supplemental questions so as to make a best possible mature answer.

5. apply to ALL SCHOOLS where you find yourself fitting eligible in their requirements.

6. try to read the PRE-DENTAL forum on SDN, it would give you the best info on what dental schools in admissions require and how to fulfil... International Dentist admissions are a process where they judge you in the interview as pe-dental student + some bench test.

7. don't think if you cleared all exams, you have automatically got admission, passing NBDE is just the entry ticket for the admissions process and makes you eligible to apply.. real process is filllin yup your application inm inute detail, sophistication, clarity of thought, maturity and responsible use of words to present yourself in the best possible way.

8. bench test : duggans course, yes its the best though it pains paying him so much..when you are there, draw every little amount of knowledge he gives you.. yes for me he was a genius who can tell you valubable practical experiences that it would turn the tables for you.listen to his video lecture as many times as you can... i listened it like 1000 times, and every time i found a new particular detail to help me...a 9 day course would tell you what to do, but if you have the interview rite on th 10th day, you cant clear the bech test... after his course you need months of personal practice to reach to perfection.. yes schools do want to see how far you reach their criteria of perfection.

9. every time you get invited for an interview, try to know what all do they ask, then try to find the EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR THAT PARTICULAR EXERCISE eg
in my vcu interview we had AMALGAM RESTORATION, i found the evaluation criteria for it on SRTA website... The candidate guides of WREB, NERB, SRTA have the poin to point criteria of what is tested... try to find out based on the location of dental school, which of these would be helpful...eg california schools = Western Regional board, east coast schools= NERB North east regional board, Southern schools = mix of wreb and srta.
when practising at home, dont just practice blindly, know these criteria and try to make what the criteria want.

10. any interview prep: in your computer, you have a different folder of each school

eg in mine
Desktop>caapid>various schools different folder>vcu>admssion criteria, a copy of application, personal statement, resume, any quesstionaire etc, fee, a MS word doc file of previous interview experiences gathered by searching sdn archive and google.
so that everytime you get an interview call, you dnt have to waste time gathering the stuff you already worked so hard... get techie smart.

11. read books on interview prep, try kindle app for windows, you would find books in 1-5 $ range... they help you a lot.

12.on the day of interview, be your best at every moment. even while talking to current students, remember at the day of interview they are not your friends rather they are also trying to judge which candidates fits like them, so be professional with them as well, dont babble around foolishly... the body language and expressions play a major role.

13. dont forget to send a thank you letter or email. google it how you write if you don't know.

14. your application, stats, resume, personal statement are precious.. dont just keep pasting them everywhere, there are parasites around... so beware.

15 Help only that much which you know, you can handle, dont just spoon feed a lazy soul who is drenching your brain to know things that are supposed to be done by oneself.

16. no one can give you an estimate on "What are my chances of admission" if you come from a place believing in astrology, then lemme be strictly saying that "nobody can tell your chances" you have to create a chance on your own.

17.don't get overconfident on getting an interview invite, it is just an interview, where the ratio of acceptance is like 1:3 to 1:5.... so be happy but don't let your excitatory neuro-transmitters shut off your brains with over-activity.

18. share your interview experience after you are done...

STAY HUNGRY,STAY FOOLISH....and THINK DIFFERENTLY (away from stats, Think like an american dental professional)
good luck

Sooper realistic and highly useful post! Thanks

Hello everyone ,
Pls , can someone tell me what all bench test material I need to buy , if I am applying to west coast schools . I am not very clear upon the types of typhodont and other stuff I would require . It would be very helpful if someone could list the material over here.

Also , pls can someone suggest me which brand to go for if I plan to buy a compressor and turbine form Lowes or Homedepot . I don't know the what should be requirements for our dental purpose so I am not able to decide on that .

Looking for your valuable advice .

Thankyou so much in advance .

Thank you all guys. Really Inspiring to read this forum. This is just what I needed. I hope I will be on the other side of the forum someday and post my story as well. Hope I get in this time.Finger crossed.
So everyone keep your hopes high. We will make it.

Hi all,
I saw some lovely posts here from the people who got accepted. Everyone has gone through a journey with their own burdens to bear before getting accepted. But then that is the package we bought when we signed up to get accepted into DDS here. I graduated in 2000 from India. Practiced for 4 years and migrated to Canada. Started off life as a Security guard and kept studying for both US and Canada. Meantime...life threw in a few curves. So that was another bag to be carried around. I could not concentrate on studies for almost 5 years. Never got good scores in either exams (US and Canadian) as I was working full-time in a call-center ( one is brain-dead after speaking to dunderheads for 8 hours continuous). But then the choice was pretty stark........keep trying for my passion....or give up to a life of lacuna.
Many of my "Friends" told me in as many words that I will not make it back to Dentistry. Family was quite sad seeing me working in call-centers and such. Wanted me to go back to India where I had everything.
I only got 78 in Part 1 and 76 in Canadian AFK. I had 3.76 GPA and 116 in Toefl. Also had some paper presentations to my credit. Got an interview call from Colorado last year and 2 schools in Canada. I guess all this put together and the fact that I worked my derrier off in practice for the bench-exam got me accepted into one of the best programs in Canada. Got wait-listed in Colorado.
No discounting a huge dose of blessing from the Celestial beings. My saga ended this year.
All I can tell you chaps is....make a decision and stick to it. If you decide to stick to dentistry...then no two ways about it.

very inspiring post chilledtooth... congrats to u n ur family....🙂

Guys! For the bench exam and before teeth preparation is begun do we have to take a putty index???

Here's the long version in case anyone's interested.
I know the first question I will get is stats - I've never posted my stats on this forum before, but my feel-good hormones are getting the better of me - so here.

Since getting here to the US, I'd been working as a Dental Assistant and volunteering at 2 non-profit organizations. I had to quit working full time in 2009 and switch to part time in 2009 after I had our first child. Had to stop working completely in late 2009 after the doctor put me on bedrest for my second pregnancy - It was during this ‘bed rest' that I had to re take NBDE 1 . I'd registered for the test before all of this and March was the last I could take it before forfeiting the fee. There is a lesson to be learnt here - DO NOT re/take if you are less than 100% . But I guess this is no longer an issue since there are no scores and can't retake anyway if you pass 🙂 .
2011 - During the interview at UCD, the interviewers kept asking me about the ‘hole' in my work history from 2009 - 2011. And after finding out that I was waitlisted because my paper application wasn't strong enough, I started working and volunteering again.

After the waitlist ,I was obsessing about the waitlist status and I found that "chilledtooth" was obsessing too - and finding that I wasn't the only one going nuts helped me rein in the ‘crazy' a little bit 🙂 . So thank you, "chilledtooth" .

I would spend days writing and show it to my husband for feedback and he'd return it with writings all over - idea not elaborated, or too cliche , or need example to back this up or something. There are times I wanted to hit him over the head with my skillet for being so nit picky and even screamed at him once - do you have any frigging idea how much time and how much work I did on the essay you casually tossed in the trash? and he said - "Do you want to get in or not? If I can find faults in your essay, What do you want to bet the adcom will too?" Gulp ! I realized he was right and while I was still plenty mad at him for being a perfectionist, I always reworked my essays without questioning him and I believe I and my statement are better for it.

For a long time I told myself I wasn't good enough, do not have what it takes. Even now there are times when a little voice says - "The schools made a mistake. It was a fluke." It is very hard to ignore it. This is where your support system kicks in .Find someone/people who will tell you you can do it ! I am truly grateful for my support system- couldn't have done it otherwise. I know I will need them again once I start school and I am glad I have them. ! For those of you who got in the first time around - not talking to you . ( not saying you did not work hard- of course you did. just saying you don't know what it is like) .For the rest of us, when every rejection letter feels like a personal failure and the wait for interviews never ending. And each time a thread pops up on SDN - " I got interview at XYZ , did you" and you didn't - something dies inside. If it weren't for those posting those threads, we would never know anything and that is worse, ( so please don't stop) but it certainly feels like someone stabbed you in your heart.

And I did see posts asking "should I use loupes" . And I agree with noradent that - " it is the prep that matters". But if you have the time, practice with loupes - it makes you look more compatible with the american system. Remember - they are evaluating you based on those 1-2 days alone. A lot depends on their perception of you.

VCU interview - the interview itself was okay - by this I mean I don't remember saying anything stupid . But the practical exam was long and hard. The dentsim - as a VCU senior put is "‘like a video game". But the kicker is , when you future is hanging over you, it is hard to take it like that . Although now I realize he was right ! Dr. Gotteleib and all of the VCU family were awesome and tried to make it as comfortable as possible, but it still is exhausting. The school's awesome and I loved the size of the program and the integrated curriculum and Dr. Gotteleib's presentation explains it well. And the students seemed to love it and had some great advice to give. The pride they have in their school was palpable . Go Rams ! After the bench test, all I could think of were the mistakes I made . The former students kept saying even if you mess up one or two, keep going - it is the total that counts, not the individual components - If I'd only listened to them, it would be a lot less stressful ! But the thought that my future was on the line kept me from taking it easy. 🙂 . Richmond is an old city with a lot of charm and it was really pretty. I was there in May, so the weather was great as well.

If you would like more details of VCU interview - check "toothfairyqueen" ‘s posts - she is a wealth of information, more so when it comes to all things VCU ! - A shout out to you and noradent - Thank you ! Also to those like Hope 4 and Bhavi4all and so many more ( the names escape my memory now- but you know who you are! ) - Thank you ! hey congrats.....
i gave my part 1 in real hurry (studied for just 3 4 months, n studying when u r newly married n in a new country makes a difference )as i thought if i pass i might b able to apply this year for CA universities.. ..i took anatomy n biochem physio books after yrs..n could not make it in part 1..got 73.. was very sad.. just d thought of.studying all these books again n appearing for part 1 exam for long 7 8 hours is killing me...but ur post really is inspiring..gave me a new hope n faith....i guess "never give up "attitude is very very important... congrats again n all the best wishes for a bright future..🙂

If you don't mind, I have a question, how long ago did you take your boards, which year?
I took my Step 1 in 2006 and am trying to figure out if its been too long and if I need to retake to apply now.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Pls can anyone help me out with this ?
I bought a central pneumatic 3 gallon compressor with working pressure 100 psi . When I connect the air turbine to it . It is not giving enough pressure to bur . Bur is not cutting . Also , there is one plastic tube which came with the turbine , I am not sure how and where it goes in the assembly.

I have connected the turbine to the compressor using couplers and hose and also sealed the threads with tape to eliminate any leakage.

Am I still doing something wrong? Do I need to buy a bigger compressor ? Pls guys guide me .....

Looking for urgent help

good question tanmay...well I am sure colleges like boston and upenn will compare...since BU and upenn specifically ask that re-applicant question and they surely go back to the old files to see why the person was not called the first time. Btw is this ur 2nd time ? or r u asking for next year?

Hello Folks,
Has anyone done the UMKC test prep course for NBDE part 1. http://www.cewebinar.com/umkc/28-on-demand-nbde-part-1-preparatory-course.html

I have been away from the dental books for over six years now and trying to find some good review books or course to help me study for Part 1.
I have Dental decks and First Aid, but I feel those are to be used after reviewing other books.
Any thoughts/ suggestions?

you just have to pass...don't waste your time and money on any course...just stick to the decks and asda papers and rather use your text books for reference instead of the other way round.....and you will be fine...

Thanks for your response Tontochico! Unfortunately since it's been so I don't have many books, the ones I do have are OLD!
Any suggestions for text books would be greatly appreciated!

Hello there...

I am a green card holder, foreign trained dentist from India. I passed my NBDE part 1 in april, 2012..
I came to US in nov, 2010 so I am in states from past 2 years..
Since I came to US, I have been working at our home business which is entirely different from the field of dentistry..
I wish to apply to Dental schools on the north east side, like BU, TUFTS, NYU as they are close to my place..
So my question is can I apply to these schools just by passing my exams only or I need to work in some dental offices for sometime before I apply to the schools..??

My only problem here is That I have not been in touch with dentistry since 2008, the year of my graduation from my dental college in India.. ( almost 4 years)

How can I proceed on making my resume strong so that and what type of training Can I do before applying to dental schools..

And I have also heard so far that people who do various research projects, easily get into dental schools.. now my next question is is it necessary to do research projects before applying?? If yes the how to enter into research opportunities?
which institutes can i apply for research thing and for how long does such projects are done?

please reply as i am planning to apply for 2014 cycle, so dont want to waste my precious time..

any additional advises will be welcomed

thanks...

first of all i wud suggest u to take your part2 and also obtain competitive score in toefl, must say dental experience in U.S adds to your resume as a good point, tak LOR'S from dds, prepare gud statement of purpose...i think 2 yrs were enuf (since 2010) for building up ur resume anyways its never too late, start working on it from now...as u said u r green card holder,u may take advantage of it n apply to virginia, chicago n tufts(i missed coz lack of guidance)..n for schools like boston, they do consider applicants wid higher studies..MAIN THING is due to pass/fail,its becum mre tough...so,every extra thing you do makes your resume stronger...gud luck!!!!

i got couple of interviews but haven't been selected so far. I think luck isn't on my side,
I have low GPA..are there any chances in NYU with GPA lower than 3...

Points to ponder

If you read the previous posts, you get almost the whole picture of what to expect. Let me try to add some more details.

1. Every year they change rules, making it more difficult for foreign-trained dentists to get into a dental program. It is going to become more challenging with the recent changes in the application selection process, since NBDE score are no longer available.

2. Apply early – as soon as application starts & before June for Caapid. Caapid applications usually start in April. But there are other schools that do not participate in Caapid & have different application dates. I believe ada.org requires you to purchase an ebook to get the complete details about licensure and schools offering advanced standing programs. I am aware of around 20 schools eligible for those on visa and another 15 more for only those who are permanent residents or citizens. Of these, some have already discontinued or are planning to discontinue the AS program. NYU has changed to 4 year AS program.

3. Personal statement/Statement of purpose– The most important factor in your application. Use this area wisely to let them know who you are as a person and why you are applying. It would be good if you can modify it to fit individual school's needs. You can tell your whole life history or pick an incident & elaborate on it. It should ideally show your passion for dentistry and how committed you are to it. (Do not simplywrite – I'm passionate about dentistry)Use simple language as you would normally converse (not too casual, not too many thesaurus words either). Get it edited by a US dentist or any US professional, if you can. They will likely give you good suggestions. Or review with your friends & family for an honest opinion. I had to redraft mine for many months before I decided to finally send it.

4. Recommendation letter – It goes without saying that you need to have exceptionally great letters. Try to get them from different specialty departments. Most schools ask you to get alteast one dean and one from your dental school professor or colleague/superior where you worked. Recommendations from US dental professional are extremely valued.

5. TOEFL – Even if the school says 90, aim for minimum100. Toefl is a big deciding factor in applicant selection. They consider Toeflnot just as an English exam, but as a test of how well you are likely to fit in. Those aiming for east coast schools, the toefl scores need to be really high and you must be comfortable speaking English too. Apply with whatever eligible scores you have. You can always update it later, unless they specify not to. TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years. So apply with your best score, not necessarily the most recent one.

6. NBDE – Now that there are no scores, it meansyou have to stand out as an applicant on the whole. Passing NBDE is reallyeasy; scoring high, not so much. So those of you not yet taken nbde, it's a lot less to worry about. And those who already have a score; don't fret if it is low & don't be overconfident if they are high. Most schools are not going to consider your scores even if you have them.
References – ASDA exam papers,Dental decks, Kaplan review book, Mosby, First aid, Google, Wiki, Youtube –should be more than sufficient to just pass.

7. Volunteer/Observership – There are many schools that offer various preceptorship/ observership/ externship/ certificate programs etc. for short/long duration. If you can get into any of these, it's great as you can also ask for a recommendation letter.
Expand your search to not justdental clinics/non-profit organizations/ research but anything like, a library or church etc; till you get an opening. You will be asked what you did after coming here. They want to know that you are an active social person. They also want to know if you understand this culture & if you are comfortable with it. Engage in something where you get to meet & interact with the local people. You need to be able to talk about something other than your family and kids.

8. Work Experience & Post Grad Education –Another important factor that will be looked into is your professional experience in your home country & US. US education & work experience,(not necessarily dental related) is given more preference. If your dentalschool GPA is low, you may try to make it up by getting a higher GPA in your Post-grad Ed. If you are a fresh graduate, the experience during school & internship; especially health camps etc. is taken into consideration.

9. CE course/workshop or paper publication/conference presentations can help to improve your resume. Some states you can work as a dental hygienist/assistant; if you qualify for it. Community work/public health etc. is given much importance.

10. Try to complete the application atleast 2 weeks ahead of deadline. Give minimum 2 weeks to process your application before enquiring about it. Emails are generally preferred.

11. Interview - Look & Be the Professional that you are!! Be genuine!

w Attire – Conservative/Formal/Semiformal –Business suit & attire preferred. I personally like navy blue/grey color- it helps to stand out in a sea of black.
- For women, skirt suits or pant suits work fine as long as you are comfortable in them. Comfortable shoes (Lots of walking, sometimes on slippery floor). Hair, make up & jewelry to be kept appropriate for a professional.
w Research about the school before interviewing & be prepared with some good questions to ask them.
w I believe nowadays most interviews are in a friendly atmosphere, where they try to make you feel relaxed. It is more of a conversation, rather than questionnaire most of the time. But be on your guard though you feel really comfortable; that you do not forget it is an interview & say something you shouldn't have.

w Likely questions asked –
- Tellme about yourself and your experience; in its different variations.
- Anything from your personal statement / application
- What have you done since coming here
- Explain the gap in your resume if you have one
- If you are a mother, will you be able to manage personal life with studies
- Why this school, have you applied anywhere else
- Some schools are particular about ethical questions – no right or wrong answer, justmake sure you have a logical explanation for it
- Some give clinical scenarios and ask you to explain your treatment plan
- General Dental topics – prostho, perio, operative, public health etc
- Your strengths, weakness, hobbies, interests; in its different variations
- Why we should pick you

w Ultimately the 3 main things they want to know are –
- Are you competent enough – do you have the hand skills, soft skills etc..
- Can you fit in – very important aspect in most schools
- Do you really want to join here – ad-coms can sense it if you have applied just for the sake of application or to gain an experience before interviewing at your choice school. They want people who will be committed to their school.

12. Bench exam – Practice! Practice! Practice!
w Most schools usually have one day for interview & school tour and the other for bench exam. Some have both on the same day and some do not have bench exams at all.
w Most commonly asked preparations – Class II amalgam, metal crown prep/PFM crown prep on first molars.
w Practice to prepare on any tooth
- ClassII amalgam or composite – MO, DO, MOL, MOB, MOD
- PFM crown
- Metal crown prep – mostly posterior
- All ceramic crown – mostly anterior
- some may ask – CL III, CL IV, 3/4th crown
- restore Cl II with amalgam or composite
- restore Cl III or Cl IV with composite
- fabricate temporary crown
- Survey, design removable PD
- Most schools allow your own burs and provide matrix bands & wedges to use. Somemay not.
- Each school has different typodont teeth. I've used both Kilgore & Columbia andthey have different texture and size.
w Prepare treatment planning and case history
w Evaluate your work
- Getyour work assessed by a US dentist.
- Set up the required assembly at home/request your dentist to practice there
- Join a course if you can afford it.
- Get ideal tooth prep models and compare your work.

13. Most schools prefer new applicants over re-applicants, unless you have significantly improved your resume the second time around.

14. Loans
w US federal loans are available to US citizens & permanent residents. I do not think those on EAD are eligible for it. Federal Stafford loan is 6.8% fixed interest rate.
w Most US private loans require a US citizen /permanent resident as cosigner.
w Your interest rate is based on your credit score, credit history & your cosigner's.
w Fixed interest rate is always higher than variable interest rate. But variable interest rate changes with the market.
w Most banks require SSN to be able to apply, some accept ITIN. I am aware of Sallie Mae, Citibank, Citizens Bank that accepts applications without SSN. Citibank loans have been bought by Discover loans; hence from next year on they may change their policy to that of Discover's.
w Some banks have a limit to the total amount you can borrow as an international student. It varies from $100,000 to $250,000.
w Some banks allow the option of releasing cosigner after 12-36months of on-time payment. You need to be a citizen/permanent resident to be eligible.

15. Lastly - Do not blindly believe anything & everything. Get your facts checked!

Great Work...!!
Good Luck Applicants!!

For all those international dentists out there I have a story to share. My story.... So here it is...I came to the US in 2007 after my marriage. The first thing I did was getting my transcript evaluated. I got my results. GPA 2.28 !! During my 1st BDS examination I fell sick and could not appear. Since absence is considered as fail my gpa suffered. The moment I got my GPA I knew it was going to be my biggest hurdle. For days I was frantically searching on sdn for an answer. But at that time I could not find much hope. Almost everyone agreed up on having a gpa of at least 2.5 to even get considered. For few days I thought of giving up my dream of becoming a dentist in US. Then I started volunteering at the county health clinic as a 4H volunteer talking to the WIC participants regarding healthy nutrition and good oral health. Meanwhile I started preparing for Part 1. I took the exam after my son was born. Results came and it was 83.. I knew it was not going to work. Retook Part 1..This time 89. Toefl 102. I got my transcripts evaluated with WES. Gpa 3.28. Better ! But not great. I knew I had to go a long way.I started looking for a place to volunteer as dental assistant. I contacted several dentists in my area. No one was interested in me. Hence I took DANB exam and got registered as a dental assistant with my state dental board. Continued my search for volunteering. During this time we had some financial problems. I had to work as a part time Walmart associate for over an year. At the same time I volunteered in and around my city for several free dental clinics. This provided me the experience to finally land up in a dental assistant job. During this time I was also applying to schools. Due to my gpa I was not even eligible to apply to several schools like uthsa, upenn etc. Even though with only my part1 I was invited for interviews at Colorado, USC and OUHSC. No acceptance. Rejections without interview from Uminn, UCSF, UOP .I could not apply to many schools because of lack of funds. I studied hard and took part 2 .. 81.. Improved my Toefl to 106. By then I was working as a part time dental assistant in a dental clinic. I got excellent letter of recommendation from my dentist. I worked on my statement of purpose for over a month. Got it proofread by a professional editing service. Applied early to schools. I got invited for the interview. After a long wait here it comes ...The Acceptance!!! Dear friends, All I would like to tell you is ‘Believe in Yourself'!! There will be several occasions in your life when you will have to stand alone...all by yourself...Believe in yourself... believe in God and keep your mind fixed on the ultimate goal...Then you will reach there. It took me 5 yrs to reach here. I have had several obstacles in my way. If I can make it ..So can YOU!! As we all know the competition is fierce.. Those who have done with your part 1 go ahead and clear Part 2. This is very very important. Improve your Toefl if you can. Volunteer in your community. Show that you care..After all dentistry is all about creating smiles.. ALL THE BEST!!!Sorry for such a long post..!
