I am torn between two extremely different professions: Dentistry v. Optometry although I'm really leaning toward optometry. During my school's spring break in March I am planning to do a LOT of shadowing. I shadowed my own optometrist summer of 2010 but I only stayed there for about..4 hours or so. He and his staff were really friendly toward me. His office is open 11 hours on Mondays and Wednesdays. I was hoping to ask him if I could shadow him again but stay the full 11 hours on one of those days. Do you guys think it would be wise for me to stay there the full 11 hours? Bring a pencil and paper? I'm a freshman in college so I hope I'm not doing this too early. I also plan on shadowing optometrists in different settings. Feedback would be really helpful.

It's never too early to start shadowing. I shadowed two doctors in the same practice every time I was home on break for the first three years of college. I also shadowed an Ophthalmologist for a day. This past summer I moved from Texas to New York and had to find new optometrists to shadow. I chose a practice with a low vision specialist, geriatrics specialist, and pediatrics and vision therapy specialist. The wide range of practice modes really helped me to see all of the different options that I would have as an optometrist. Also, when doing an exit interview at PCO last month, the admissions counselor cited my vast amount of shadowing experience as being very extensive and helping to set me a part. I have since been accepted, so I would say that doing a lot of shadowing, especially with different specialties and modes of practice, could definitely help you.

I'd like to start shadow doctors with different specialties. Do you mind sharing how you found them in NYC? In your experience, what was the best approach? Google? Word-of-mouth? Email? Walk-in? I am interested in pediatrics and vision therapy as well as specialty contact lens. Any help would be much appreciated.

11 hours sounds a little much. I know personally I'd be really tired after 8. Maybe try to do 6 or 8 hours twice, instead of 11 hours once.

No point in shadowing the same OD in the same setting. Try a different setting.

I was actually shadowing in Poughkeepsie, NY. I found the Dr. who specialized in Pediatrics through my uncle who had taken his daughter to her as part of the infant see program. The other specialists that I shadowed in NY were in that same practice.
