Hey guys,

I will be shadowing two general dentists this upcoming July (and I will continue shadowing one of them during winter break) and I will also shadow an OMFS in August (I am so excited). 🙂

In total for this summer:
General Dentist: 50-60 hours
OMFS: 40-50 hours
Total: At least 100 hours combined.

My question - though most schools require at least 100 hours of shadowing (and I will probably continue past this), can I count my OMFS shadowing or only the general dentists?

Thank you all in advance!

While some schools like to see applicants shadow specialists, most are concerned with general dentist shadowing hours and you should make sure you have a good amount of General before you apply. I’d say like 100+hours is a good number.

Definitely throw in some specialities to keep it interesting. To be honest, I dreaded and hated shadowing. I always felt like I was in the way of the staff, I didn’t know much about dentistry yet to ask good questions, and you’ll probably accidentally dose off for a second from watching afar the tenth occlusal filling of the day. If you can somehow assist, that’ll make your experience much less boring.

Also, bring a telescope
