Hello fellow Future DVMs 🙂

I'm 17 & a first year freshmen at a SUNY school. My question is, should I be worried if I can't overtally into Chem 1 or Bio this yr? This semester I started out in Chem 1 but I wasn't comfortable in the class so I dropped it. I tried to get back into the class for spring semester, but there is only one section for it and its full. Same for Bio. I plan on taking summer science classes anyway but should I be worried that I will be behind now?

Thanks guys!!

I wouldn't worry about being behind at all. The Chemistry sequence takes the longest to get through of all the prerequisites, but you can do it in 3 years or less no problem especially is you are taking summer classes. I am a non traditional student who decided to take the prereqs after getting an art degree. I had to take ALL of my science and math prereqs and did it in 3 years plus a few extra classes for fun whil working and volunteering.

I found it advantageous, actually, taking both general chemistry 1&2 and physics 1&2 over the summer. I took chem one summer and physics the next. Although intensive, it was good to just be taking one class at a time and get deep into the subject matter. I think taking these courses over the summer is a good idea, and if you sign up early you shouldn't be shut out.

You should be very very worried.

Just kidding. Only if you want to be in vet school by 19 (why the hell would you want to do that? don't do that). Otherwise, take the course when you're ready and prepared to do well in it.

No, you shouldn't be.

But take a step back: even if you get behind ... so what? You do what, an extra semester or two of school? Meh. I mean, sure, maybe you end up spending more money (and it'd sure be nice to avoid THAT), but very little is the end of the world as far as getting into vet school. More important than getting behind is making sure that when you DO take the classes, you get decent grades.

Try not to lose perspective. You're going to need it down the road. 🙂

If it makes you feel any better, I'm a junior, and took chem I this semester and will be in Chem II next semester. Organic chems next year.

It's completely possible to finish all your pre-reqs in three years, dependent on what else you need to take for your major/other graduation requirements. At my undergrad, which did have fewer requirements for most majors than most other schools, you could take no science your freshman year and still finish with a biology major--could probably also make a chem major fly, though that would be tougher.

Also, there is something to be said for taking your time. I could have done everything in undergrad, but am really glad I said "screw it" to taking some that I'm taking post-grad and took some classes more interesting to me than physics that I wouldn't have gotten the chance to take otherwise. Also, as someone else mentioned with summer courses, I'm glad that I will be taking physics on its own (as an evening class while working) and be able to put the time I need into it since I know I would have done very mediocre if I took it with everything else I was doing in undergrad.
