I'm an AA premed student at UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) majoring in biology. I'm currently a second semester sophomore, and, in terms of grades, my first three semesters haven't been too great. Freshman year I got a B+ in PSYC 201 (Intro to Social Psych), another non-science related course, and in CHEM 104 (General Chemistry 2). My sophomore year isn't off to a great start, with a B+ in MCB 250 (Molecular Genetics), a B+ in PSYC 210 (Behavioral Neuroscience), and a B- in CHEM 232 (Intro to O-Chem). Basically, my report card is currently riddled with lots of B's, and this brings my cGPA down to a 3.61 and my sGPA down to about 3.52, give or take, and considering how most medical schools' average GPA is around the 3.7-3.9 range, I was just wondering what my chances are in the long run and whether or not I should give up and change majors before it's too late (I am probably going to begin preparing for the MCAT next semester, I just want to know whether or not I should continue down this path before I start preparing).

if you want medicine you know the answer to this question. If you dont, you also know the answer. Your grades are not great but they arent necessarily a deal breaker yet.

Your GPA isnt insurmountable in anyway and as a URM, schools do tend to give more slack.

You absolutely should keep going. Numbers are not everything. Crush your classes over the next two years and do well on MCAT and you will be fine.

I had very similar stats when I was a sophomore. PM me if you want some advice (also bio major from U of I)

You're fine.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions. I made a minor typo in my post. I am an Asian American sophomore at U of I, not an African American (I thought that AA stood for Asian American, my apologies). I understand that as an Asian American, I might have a few more problems with a GPA like this.

It probably won't hurt you as much as you think. Iirc a major confounder was that Asian applicants were more likely to be from unlucky states like California

the median asian MCAT score is also 1-2 points higher compared to the general pop, so you also have to take that into account. But you are correct more asians appy to medical school than whites in california! But proportionally roughly the same amount get into med school.
