I heard that passing the pharm tech certification exam has very little weight on the pharmacy application if you don't have actual pharmacy experience. How true is this? Should I wait for my exam results so I can include it on my application, or should I just forego it and submit now? TIA

I can't weigh in specifically but it does make sense that passing it would hold no weight if you haven't used it. About anyone who studies for a couple of weeks could pass it.

With that being said, I'd wait on someone to weigh in and tell you what they think. Every little bit counts... but part of that every little bit is getting everything in early, as well.

All I can post is my opinion to. I'd say you could go either way. If you think your app is a little thin, then I would wait for the score. If you're confident with what you have now, then send it.

Having actually worked in a pharmacy carries a lot of weight in an application because the school will see that you've had hands on experience in a pharmacy and with this experience, are still interested in the profession.

Being certified doesn't carry that weight and is more of an achievement type thing. But it won't hurt your application and it will give you something to add if you think your app is lacking. So basically it's up to you.

Having your CphT on the application is nowhere near as crucial to the process as getting it in early and swiftly, so in my opinion, forget about the cert for now and get that app in.

Since you haven't gotten any experience with the cert., it's pretty much useless to a CoP in terms of using it to assess what quantitative benefit the cert has/had upon you as a candidate.

I agree with passion. You will potentially do more harm by submitting later than benefiting from getting the license. I would definitely still take the exam and work (and talk about this during the interviews)

Thanks, everyone. I guess I'll be submitting today then. Yay!

Koercive, you make a good point about talking about work experience at the interview. Thanks! Btw, I'm a UCI graduate, too...2007. Good luck at USC! My friend went there for pharmacy and she was saying that her mom was mad that she chose her dad's alma mater of USC, which is the rival school of her mom's alma mater of UCLA, lol!
