youmustknowme i like your enthusiasm lol I'm currently at a community college 3.6 gpa, i'm applying now to some 4 year schools in order to transfer. i would like to be either a biology or psychology major...or maybe both who knows. i wonder how competitive these things are???? my sat's sucked but i have strong extracurriculars...havent finished the app but right now im thinking columbia, yale, and howard...subject to change lol
LETS KEEP THIS GOING PEOPLE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR GPA AND WHERE YOUR APPLYING!!!!!!!!!!

3.85-3.87 GPA, can't remember where exactly. Applied to Columbia, Yale, and Howard.

4.0 GPA, varsity softball as extra-curricular activity (lol probably not the usual), not much of a minority unless being a female counts. I am working on my diversity essay right now... woo hoo! I was applying to Columbia, Duke, and UT Houston. But, now that I have read through some of these posts it seems like Columbia will be full... does anyone know anything about this?

Do any of you know another email address to contact the program? I have been trying to contact them with the [email protected], but it seems to not work.

what do you mean it doesn't work? does it say that the email address is invalid? I emailed them a little less than a month ago and I got a reply the next day.

3.5 GPA at a big ten university. I like long walks on the beach and I love watching the sunset. How's that for a little bit about myself? lol kidding! I'm majoring in biology and it's been tough but "defeat is not an option". umm what else..oh i applied to Nebraska, Umdnj and Case! I'll be happy in any of those three sites, I'm looking forward to meeting people with similar interests. It will be an experience to remember if I get accepted 🙂

Applied to UWash, Yale, and UCLA (Columbia was my other choice, but it was full when I turned in my app). I love trying new things--everything form surfing to glass blowing to archery and dragonboating, and college has been a blast for me so far. You'll find me struming on my guitar, baking in the kitchen, or raving about NCIS. I'm a second year, majoring in Physiology and Neuroscience (thinking about a music minor) and hope that SMDEP can help me decide whether or not medicine is for me!

well the thing is I've sent two emails with different questions and in different days to that email. And the only thing they answer is "Thanks for contacting the SMDEP". that's it. I called them once and they gave me another email but I lost it. I guess I'll call them again.

That's odd. I hope the other email work though, or when you call them again... just ask your questions.

I know this isn't on subject, but...
"Dragonboating"???? PLEASE enlighten me

Dragon boating.. basically, its a racing competition in, well, the water. You sit in a long "dragon" boat next to one person and there are around 10 rows and one person who sits at the head of the boat or orchestrate the paddling and one in the back who steers the boat. Ideally, you paddle all in unison so the boat will go faster! It's pretty darn hard and you use tons of back, stomach, and arm muscles. I stopped doing it because it conflicted with my schedule but hopefully it all works out next year.

what kinds of extracurriculars did you guys add??? I haven't done many but im wondering if learning to play guitar should be added?? opinions anyone

Admission decisions come out 2 weeks from today!!!!

gahh! It kinda feels like college apps all over again, except it determines my summer, not the next four years of my life lol

I was just wondering if anyone is in the same boat as me. My application was completed on the 29th and UNebraska just emailed me today (Feb 1) saying that my application is in review but the admission decision release won't be until April 1st.

I'm hoping it's a mistake but I don't know.

Unfortunatley it's whenever your application in red as determined by SMDEP was completed by. If it was before Feb 1st you'll hear back Feb 15th. If not you won't hear till April 1st.

Where's everyone applying?

Me: Yale, UVA, Duke

Thanks for your response. But what do you mean by "red?" According to my status on the SMDEP website, it was completed on Jan. 29th.

I'm applying to Nebraska, Howard, and Washington.

I didn't want to apply to UCLA but because Columbia was full when I submitted my application, it's was the only other school I could apply to (because all the other ones starts before I end school). Do you think it would be fair for me to call the office and ask them about it? I really want to apply to Columbia, but it's not really fair that because I turned in my application early that I didn't get to.

BTW... does anyone have numbers on how many students get accepted and actually attend the program?

If SMDEP has your app completed by Jan 29th according to their website you should hear back FEB 15th. But if you only have your app submitted Jan 29th it usually takes two weeks to have it completed. Hope that helps.

According to the website you are to not contact individual sites, but why not?

I don't think there are really any numbers out there as far as admissions. I basically remember reading on some forumns that Duke, Yale, UCLA, and Columbia are the toughest.

columbia supposedly rejects 10 students for every 1 they do accept. so I guess around roughly 800 apply there since they take 80. Idk about anywhere else.

Thanks. It did say completed on Jan. 29th; I submitted it weeks before. It's just so weird that Nebraska specifically said in the email that my admission release date is on Apr1. I emailed them about it but I guess I won't be getting any replies because apparently, we're not supposed to ask designated sites about admission release date questions.

On the number count, 80 sounds about right, I think I read it somewhere in the long thread.

Is 80 the number for most of the sites, or is it just a columbia thing?

I think that's the general number for all programs

although I know that the blog is here 2 help people.. it can be a little disheartening when people ask super simple questions. I mean if you are really taking this whole SMDEP summer program thing seriously don't you think you should know when the date they start sending out acceptances is, how many people are accepted at each site and all that? I know that I personally want this SOOO BADLY that i spent HOURS researching it so I would know exactly everything I could pertaining to the whole experience.. me and my other friend were were talking about it and its like.. if u really were so into this opportuinity you should know this stuff.

😎

while I generally agree with your statement some people are not as motivated, but still take the time to apply. Like yourself, I spent numerous hours if not days researching individual sites and how the process works. Unfortunately that's life. It's how it goes. It's how medical school admissions will work too, so try and get used to it.

They emailed me that too and I completed me application in January 21st! I hope it is a mistake because I don't think I can wait till April. Everyone tells me not to email them back asking a question. They also emailed me that on February 1st, so shouldn't I know by February 15th?

If people weren't motivated they wouldn't be here asking questions in the first place. We're here, doing the research, trying to find out more about this whole program. Just because one person knows the answer doesn't mean it's a stupid question and another person shouldn't ask it.

We're all here to help each other, answer each others' questions and give opinions, if not, then why are we all here anyways?

My app was submitted and completed before Feb 1, but none of the schools have my app in review even though all the materials are in. Is this happening to you guys too? It's been 3 WEEKS! -_-

dnt worry i definitely think as long as its in by then you will b fine! thats why they have the two week grace period after the 1st so they can review everything.

Yea the same thing is happening to me...all my stuff is in and my app is complete yet it doesn't say anything about my app being under review for the schools i chose. I guess I just have to wait till the 15th to find out.

same here! no one says it's in review...
i'm actually so relieved to see the same things happening to you too haha i was getting worried.

HEY ! i was thinking... maybe we should start up a facebook group so we can all start to get to know each other, like people have done in previous years. ... maybe once acceptances have started we definitely should!

Yeah, the SMDEP 2010 group shall be established on February 15.

I cannot even contain my excitement anymore!!!!!!! youmustknowme and I are always talking about this! I even dream about it.. HURRY UP NEXT WEEK PPLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

where's everyone applied to? What's your #1?

wow! 8 more days! i really think they will post it at 12:00 am on Monday the 15th because when i called a couple of weeks ago they said all the sites have to turn in their decisions on the 14th! ahh SOOOO ExCitEd. I have a backup plan if i dont get in though. I plan on taking Calc 2 in the summer and do something NorCal kinda did but with Projects Aboard! 2 weeks of Medical Interning and 2 weeks of helping in an orphanage outside of the USA. Anyone already want to connect on facebook? send me a private message so we can exchange names..🙂

that sounds like a lot of fun. really? do you think it will be 12:00AM Monday -- an automated response? I hope so! I was thinking it wouldn't be until later in the day. start a SMDEP 2010 group on FB!

My best friend passed away..she meant the world to me. sometimes i wonder if everything we're fighting for is worth it...

Remember not to get too upset if you don't get accepted, there are more important things in this short life..

lexieismyalias,

All I can say is that I'm sorry for your loss. Even though we don't know you very well, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that you have a support group in the members of this forum.

hey honey.. im so sorry to hear about your friend. You are so right by the way.. I just got off the phone with my mom telling her if I do not get in I don't know what I am going to do! but after reading what you just said.. really just brought things into perspective.. while this is a great opportunity it is not the end of the world if we dont get accepted.

as Naijagirl44 said..we are all here for you!

Aii Lexi, you brought a tear to my eye. I am very sorry for your loss, Ive never lost anyone close so I cannot imagine how you must feel. Hang in there!

For those who have applied to Howard, have they started to reivew your application yet?

One of my elementary school best friends passed away a few weeks ago. She had a very strong allergic reaction to a nut that resulted in a heart attack and later a stroke that left her in a coma she never woke up from with irreversible damage to her organs. She was the sweetest thing with the most contagious smile and it really made me realize how short life is and that we take many things for granted. We take waking up the next morning for granted .. sometimes our friends and family. It's important to let your closest friends and family know that you love them. To embrace living in the moment (something I've been working on, because my mind is frequently in the future and many times I forget about the things I am lucky to have in the present).

Lexi, my heart goes out to you, your best friend and all the people I'm sure she has touched in her short life.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I know how it is to lose someone extremely close to you. Hi everyone Im applying to Howard UWash and UMDNJ.Ill release my stats when I get into this program and I go to UMD.. Go Terps!(hehe)..Howard is my top choice followed by UWash and then UMDNJ.
I pray we all get in
