Also, if you don't mind me asking? What other programs are you applying to?

Does anyone know how competitive the dental program is?

One is for NY residents only, the other was a johns hopkins summer research program. It's like smdep in that you can choose 3 sites

I think someone said they accept 20 out of 80 for dental.. Makes me nervous because I am applying to the dental program. :dead:

I agree it seems like the Dental spots fill up quickly so it does get competitive. Maybe thats why they recommend you turn in the APP ASAP!

Dental: Louisville, Nebraska, and Columbia! Good luck everyone! 🙂

I have never heard of the SMDEP until now!! It looks great and I am furious that my university has never made any announcement about! Do you guys think it is too late to apply? Can someone give me an insight on how they applied and all of that? I was looking at the schools and my top 3 are Columbia, Case Western, and UCLA

Don't bother with UCLA if you're not in community college, they expressly state there is a bias for community college kids. It's not too late to apply, but columbia is the most sought after. Last year, I know that case reached out to me because they had an extra space, even though I didn't apply there. So that's a good place.
There are 2 essays, a personal statement and diversity essay. I wrote that I wanted to become a doctor because both my parents had/have cancer (breast and brain) and I was in the hospital basically all my life and what I did there etc etc.
Requires 2 LoR, but they seem to place more importance on essays and activities. You should apply soon though.

Edit: btw, I applied yale, columbia, Howard for medical.

The next deadline is not until Macrh 1st, but you'd have to start right away! As in order your transcript to be sent right away and have two recommenders ready to send their letter ASAP. I think its entirely possible though! Best of luck!

Thank you both, I am panicking so hard right now haha, I have 3 exams in the next two weeks but I really want to apply for this program!!!
I am skimming through the application requirements and it says "Request letters of recommendation or send the SMDEP Recommendation Form to your recommenders." Can I choose one or the other or both? Is one more preferred than the other?

Either or...doesn't matter.

6 days 8 hours 52 minutes! (Im way too excited)

Still says they havent received an LOR and it was sent a whileee ago +pissed+
At this point, it doesn't matter. Everything is sent out already, they most likely already decided. LOR don't mean much. As long as it's in before the final deadline, youre fine

What's the difference between applying for the first cycle vs. the second cycle? is there a difference between chances or is it because those that apply by 2/1 are informed by 2/15? vs those that apply by 3/1; it takes longer to inform them?

There is a reason why they encouraged us to apply early.. I think if they find enough good people in the first cycle then they will have less spots in the 2nd cycle... Like if you apply late, the schools might be already full or maybe even more competitive because they have less spots available.. Like from old threads, a lot of people that applied late... The schools were already full. It really depends on how many they accept in the first cycle..

Like for example, if you are an outstanding applicant with 30 other outstanding applicants in the first cycle then they will most likely accept all of you. If you are an outstanding applicant competing against 30 other outstanding applicants in the second cycle and they only have like 10-15 spots left, well it kinda does decrease your chances due to availability. Even if you have a better application than someone in the first cycle, they already accepted them, so they can't really take it back...

same 😴which sucks b/c that reference was someone i was really close to and she probably wrote an amazing letter.🤔

I mean if the letter is from someone who knows me very well and is probably better than my other recommender's letter, it matters. At least to me lol.

quick question
so the office received my transcript and not my 2 LOR. but my apps said in review. did this mean that my LOR is useless?
btw im in the 2nd cycle

If yours Says that you're currently in review, but you are the 2nd cycle, I guess that means they're done looking at the 1st cycle...?
I for one feel like LOR are useless regardless, based on everything I've read throughout past years of SMDEP. You need it in regardless though, so just get those letters in asap

My LoR are send by my professor few days ago, i think they r still matching it to my app.
I guess my LoR r useless at this point.

I think if they receive your transcript, it just automatically submits to the school.. Regardless if you have your LOR or not.. So when it submits, it changes to "in review".

Dear Student,

The National Program Office (NPO) thanks you for applying to the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program’s (SMDEP) 2016 session. Your completed application was received by the program site(s) you selected. On February 15, you should log in at (http://smdep.org/apply-to-smdep/), select the appropriate “Application Login” on the right to view your admission decision. Upon review, you may notice one of the following statuses:

  • Accepted: You will have two business days to confirm your acceptance. The NPO offices will be closed on Monday, February 15 in observance of President’s Day. Therefore, Wednesday, February 17 by 5:00 pm (EST) marks the two business day cutoff for confirming your acceptance. If you miss the deadline to confirm, your status will change to “withdrawn after accept”.
Note: You cannot accept an offer, then change your mind. Once you confirm with a program site, it is considered a final decision. Any change after confirming with a site is considered a withdrawal from the program.

  • Not Accepted: You did not meet the program site’s eligibility requirements. Please be advised that the SMDEP National Program Office does not make admissions decisions. Admission decisions are made by the SMDEP program sites and they are completely autonomous in making admission decisions.
The NPO encourages you to visit http://smdep.org/resources/ for other enrichment opportunities.

The NPO wishes you all the best as you prepare for an exciting and enriching summer.

A while back, a supervisor/PR person from SMDEP organized a webinar with a few SMDEP alumni.
In the seminar, I remembered a few things:
  • International students cannot participate. Must be U.S. citizen.
  • Juniors and seniors may apply. There were instances where they were accepted. (but I'm assuming priority is for fresh/soph)
  • There is no bias for early cycles or regular cycles. Everyone has a fair chance of being evaluated for admission.
  • The program will expose you to both medical and dental, allowing you a better understanding of your preferred major. Quite common for students to switch sides.
  • All the alumni praising SMDEP for being the greatest thing since automobiles, refrigerators , and sliced bread 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁

Second LOR finally received  They really take that 10 business day thing seriously lollll

Hi Everyone!

I hope you all get accepted into your desired programs! I applied to Columbia, Duke & Yale. Make sure you all keep in touch with them regarding your application. I submitted my application back in December and for some reason it said one of my LOR was not received along with my transcript. I called in early Jan and they said they had everything and I was all set, but my application still kept saying they weren't received so I decided to call again today and I'm so glad I did. I guess a error happened in their system, so their taking the issue to a supervisor. Hopefully they resolve everything and my application is able to be reviewed for the first cycle. Just thought I'd share with you guys, incase anyone is going through the same issue.
Good luck everyone!
