Social Media
Absolutely. I've seen many applicants get rejected because their follower count is something to be scoffed at.

I've read a handful of examples where adcom members have looked up applicants, for various reasons. I understand that it's rare, but that it does happen.
Be cautious -- mind who your friends are and what they tag you in, make your profiles private and be careful what you post. Easy.

So I know this has been covered extensively and it's safer to be cautious but do adcoms really take the time to look at applicant's social media? Is this more of a possibility later on in the process, when deciding whether or not to give an interview?
Rarely.

Not as often as they look you up on SDN to see if your avatar is rocking a big ole' blunt.
Safer than sorry. Just deactivate it during the cycle.
I have my doubts that its a rare occurrence. It takes 2 seconds to look someone up when you have all their info. They probably do the sh1t all the time just to see if there is any egregious content and no-one ever knows about it. I wouldn't think they scrutinize very closely beyond that.
Probably just seems like it doesn't happen often because nobody talks about it unless they actually find something.

Shouldn't be a problem if you are posting pictures of you volunteering, mentoring children at a youth camp, and helping the needy like the good person you are
been posting awesome **** for years waiting for the day that my FB is checked by adcoms

I can't speak for anyone else, but I had a couple interviewers google me. One pulled up my college athletics profile on his computer during my interview. One found an essay I wrote that got published in our school magazine and commented on it (I never mentioned the essay or anything about in my application). There was nothing bad that they could find, but it definitely got my heart racing when I realized they were definitely looking me up. So...an adcom might not take the time to look you up, but an interviewer definitely might. Better safe than sorry!

Basically, if you have fewer than 50,000 followers on Insta, you should be looking at Caribbean schools.
Not exactly relevant to medical school, but my dad is the director of HR at his company and he says that even if your account(s) are private, employers and what not can still get behind your privacy - with ease. Social media is a huge deal and simply putting yourself on private to hide the pictures of you blacked out in a fraternity's basement isn't doing anything for people who want to find out about you - whether that be jobs or school
