Marq, they weigh verbal more heavily than the other sections of the MCAT. Though why that little thing would lead to a rejection when all your other stats are outstanding, I don't know.

thats common knowledge that at MOST (grain of salt taken) schools verbal is most important. There is a study that shows that verbal has the most significant correlation with success on the boards, its been posted but i dont know where it is.

It made me nearly **** my pants b/c browsing their website compared to previous published MSAR and others stats says their avg. MCAT jumped up from a 33 to 35 in the past year, so I VERY seriously entertained the possibility of your statment being true for a minute 😱

You have phenomenal qualifications - don't let stanford get you down, am I'm sorry if they did indeed reject you - other schools would be honored to have you amongst their program.

Their secondary fee is $10223.3 Vatus (the currency of Vanatu, a polynesian island) let;'s make this a scavenger hunt on the internet - first one to convert that correctly wins a prize!

or I suppose you guys could go the boring route and just look it up on Stanford's webpage 🙄
 
the story about the girl getting 5 rejection letters from the same school....that is SO WRONG! 😡 🙄
 
stanford is my #1 choice. i wouldn't mind so much rejections from other places but one from them would really hurt.
 
I've hated Stanford ever since I was in high school. I wouldn't be surprised if they reject me quickly. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment because I'm applying there again.
 
well, i didn't apply there cuz they hadn't taken anyone from my hs in the 3 yrs previous.

i did end up getting accepted to harvard and yale, the only top schools i applied to. so who knew? i don't regret not having applied b/c i wanted to go to stanf so much that if they rejected me, it wouldn't reallly hurt.

I emailed Patricia Perez a while back - She told me that it didn't matter where you did your prereqs, even a comm college would be fine. My premed advisor advised me against going to a CC, but that is all I could afford. I have a foreign Bachelors degree and a Masters from a Florida Univ. Should I even consider applying to Stanford because my prereqs are from a CC? Do you think Stanford was just trying to be 'politically' correct when they gave me that reply?

so someone recently informed me that my 9 in verbal could have (and probably did) seal my fate. its weighted heavily by stanford AND its < 10...not a good combination

street philosopher...me too!! i loved stanford when i visited in junior year in hs, and applied early there. but they didn't even defer me...rejected me outright!! after that, i was hated them too. but like you, i'm applying to the med school 🙂 probably be one of those who gets a rejection letter soon 🙂

yes, i was the one who got 2 different rejection letters. one post secondary one pre secondary. they were very nice enough to rub salt in my eye.

thanks stanford!

oh and that doctor (from Minnesota) who killed her kid went to stanford for her residency.

i want to go to stanford and say...hey, if this it the kind of doctor you produce...no thank you!
 
Old Man--why did you fill out a secondary if they rejected you pre-secondary? Was it a mistake?

Stanford admissions seems messed up - why would they reject an almost perfect applicant just because of a 9 on verbal? 😕

Makes me glad that I didn't apply though.🙄

sigh, BP, come on, haven't you figured this out already? Obviously, you cant be a capable doctor if you can't connect what a impressionist art history critic's ideas would be on the income tax.

The Diversity Myth, by Peter Thiel and David Sachs

Both highly successful ($100 million+) graduates of stanford ugrad and law school show that the stanford claim of "diversity" is really a sham.

Good read, I recommend it. Gives good insights into the school.

odd, I just got a stanford 2ndary, and my GPA is <3.4. Altho, my MCAT is 35, and I have a killer personal statement..but do they look @ that?

there is a thread in the MSTP that has a link to some inside document on Stanford's admissions procedures and variables. I forgot where, but go through it. Basically, the computer assigns weight in this order:
1)MCAT Bio score
2)Verbal score
3)Physical score
4)science GPA
5)quality of institution
6)Age ?
7)SEX!
8)Disadvantaged Status
9)URM
10)Graduate school
The top third automatically get secondaries, the bottom third automatically get rejections, and the middle get reviewed by actual people who decide whether a secondary should be mailed out.
 
i have a 3.6 from UCLA and a 32 MCAT. my rejection letter was dated the same date my AMCAS was transmitted to them. I guess they're looking for super high numbers. Oh well, at least I'll save money on the secondary.

Well, if that's the case, they must be semi-dyslesxic, because I got a secondary, and I have neither a high MCAT score, nor did I earn my degree from a "known" undergrad institution. I figure i have the whole non-traditional vibe going on, so perhaps that's why I'm gonna spend $75 bucks so I can get really REJECTED!

To the people who didn't get a secondary, no worries...there's something better out there for ya! It's too early to get all bummed out, so don't freak out.

i think your sex matters a lot. i know a girl who got waitlisted there two years ago with a 3.7 and 32 from columbia, but i know a guy from columbia with a 3.9 science gpa, 3.8 cum, 35 got rejected without secondary...both asian cali residents.

Regarding gender... it doesn't matter that much. THe only reason it might matter is because the average MCAT score of women is ~2 points below the average for men. So if you want to assume that the average MCAT of applying women is also ~2 points below the average MCAT of applying men... then of course, women are going to be accepted with ~slightly~ lower stats (since almost all medical schools except 50/50 men/women).

Just out of curiousity I compared acceptance rates of men vs women at about 15 different schools. All but one school I looked at accepted women at rate only about 30% higher than men.

If you ask me, that's pretty trivial...
 
well its more than trivial (if you talk about statistical significance) - for example at stanford there was 15% more applications from men than from women - but in the end the class was 55% women. this indicates that either women are more competitive inherently (for that class year) or they are actively aided in the admissions process in a more than trivial manner. since the average mcats are 2 points lower for women as rp said, the former is questionable. i think this is quite appropriate, and hardly takes away from the achievement of getting into medschool. though it seems like a foregone conclusion that women should be equally represented in med these days, it has taken a long time and active selection to have an equalized men:women. it is interesting to apply this thought to more controversial issues...
 
i don't think that's trivial- especially if you're the guy getting the rejection in that case and have worked your butt off the past 4 years, only to be hurt by something you can't control- I'M A MAN LIVING IN A MAN'S BODY!

soren's just pointing out that - you have 2 individuals- both from cali, both asian, both from the same institution, and the guy has better 'numbers, but he doesn't get the secondary, while the girl does.

if you ask me, sex seems to play a role here? and not a trivial one.

MAYBE- there's that 2/3 in and 1/3 out rule, but that 2/3 isn't from the total application pool. asian guys compete with asian guys and asian girls compete with asian girls. So out of each age/ethnic/sex category-- only the top 2/3 get secondaries.

I was at a lecture in UC Davis where the Stanford dean(Garcia) was speaking and he said women are given a big preference. And that selection list has been revised I dont know the exact order but now Disadvantaged status is at the top rather than MCAT Bio.
 
It might seem like more than trivial... but when you consider that gpas of women are about the same as that as men... we're really only MCAT scores here.

And how much do MCAT scores matter? They may matter a lot... but usually they are broken now into groups... like <25, 25-28, 28-30, 30-32, 33-35, 35+ So the 2 point difference between men and women at most makes the difference of being in one group below... and at the least, makes no difference at all. I guess what I'm saying is that two men, one with a 35 and one with a 37 are going to be considered about the same (assuming they have the same verbal score) so in the same way... a women with a 35 and a guy with a 37 are going to be considered the same... regardless of gender.


Nevermind... I guess my point is... 2 points isn't a big deal... even when comparing two people of the same gender.
 
rp i think we're saying the same thing..

the mcat doesn't seem to matter as much as sex- as long as on the mcat you're above a certain threshold... you're ok.

who really cares though-- if a school gives some extra preference to women- then so be it.. i'd rather be at a school with 60 40 female to male ratio then a school with 70 30 male to female ratio if you know what i mean.

sex: female (most bugladies are female 🙂)
gpa: science-3.64, non-science-3.98, cumm-3.78
mcat: let's just say mid-twenties, alright, 😉 ?
EC's: college athlete, lots of volunteer experience, employed in a medically related field
undergrad: CA resident, but attended out of state school

wow, buglady! we have very similar stats -- except i'm a year older and haven't taken the mcat. maybe there's hope for me yet 🙂
 
Of course there's hope for us old folks, lola! Good luck with the MCAT in August....I took mine twice, my first experience with the test was terrible, noisy classroom and terrible proctors, but this past spring was a bit better! I hope you picked a good testing center!
