Does anyone have any ranges for schools? I mean you could have a median of 3.4 but a range of 2.8-3.5.

Median averages may make someone not want to apply to a school if they are 3.5. However, if the range is 2.8-3.4 they may try. I dunno I'm just curious.

Perhaps if we are going to link this to the FAQ we should clear up some confusion that may occur due to sarcasm (aka CBCOM). Maybe it would be best just to link the first post with the compiled data....

I meant to do exactly that. Thanks for the reminder. Done.

I'm assuming the first post is up-to-date. Correct me if I'm wrong.

* GPA: the average for each entering class has consistently been 3.5. The range is fairly broad, with greatest emphasis placed on the science GPA. For those who got a slow start, we look for steady improvement. Most important are your grades in upper level science classes taken during the junior and senior years. Course work in the biological sciences and in biochemistry receives the closest scrutiny.

* MCAT: the average for each entering class has ranged from 26 to 27. Here the range is somewhat narrower than the GPA review. If you are disappointed with your scores, don't be afraid to retake the MCAT. Success in medical school requires discipline and perseverance, so we look for individuals who keep trying to improve their performance.

from the MSUCOM website

MSUCOM's website sucks, so this may be out of date. I have some information specific to the classes of 2011 and 2012 that I can try to dig up later today.

Found it.

MSUCOM Class of 2011:

Avg. GPA: 3.55
Avg. MCAT: 26

MSUCOM Class of 2012:

Avg. GPA: 3.56
Avg. MCAT: 26.3

According to her, PCOM Class of 2012 matriculates:

MCAT: 24 (8, 8, 8)
Cum GPA: 3.4
Sci GPA: 3.3

I am so confused. Here is from PCOM's website:

In 2004, the entering D.O. Class of 2007 consisted of 254 first-time students from 136 different colleges and 27 states. The average class GPA was 3.38, the science GPA was 3.45 and the mean MCAT score was 24

I really doubt that their average MCAT has stayed the same over the years. Average MCATs have only been going higher, especially at ostepathic schools. And the older science GPA seems to be higher: I really doubt that admission to PCOM has gotten easier, that seems crazy

I remember going to PCOM's open house in November and seeing some higher numbers. I thought it was 27-28ish or something, and a higher science GPA. I vividly recall that it was lot higher than their outdated website!

That said, thanks tditty for calling and trying to get some answers!

Do DO schools have a preference for instate/out of state applicants? Also, where can I find the most recent ranking of the schools? Thanks!

Time to update with class of 2013 averages :)

PCOM's stats are wrong anyway.
"In 2008, the entering D.O. Class of 2012 consisted of 267 first-time students from different colleges and states. The average class GPA was 3.43, the science GPA was 3.32 and the mean MCAT score was 26."
http://www.pcom.edu/Admissions/adm_FAQs/Adm_FAQs.html

VCOM
"GPA: The Class of 2013 has an average science GPA of 3.51 and average overall GPA of 3.55.
MCAT: The average MCAT score is above 25 with a median writing sample of O."
http://www.vcom.vt.edu/admissions/profile-2013.html

KCUMB Class of 2013

Average GPA: 3.68 (science and non-science)

Average MCAT: 27 (it was actually over 27, but not quite 28)

Wow, haven't been in this forum in a while...

COMP 2013:
Overall GPA: 3.56
Science GPA: 3.52
MCAT: 28

I have to say that I'm impressed with the stats of some of the incoming classes. People are kicking some major bootay. This really helps the rep of DO schools.

Its not long before some of the DO schools have average MCAT scores in the 30s. Competition keeps getting more and more tough.

I think Touro CA has the highest average MCAT, around a 29, but they get a lot of people from Northern California, and that region has some of the smartest people in the country, its no surprise that innovative companies like Google and Apple operate in the region. Western is like a 27 as are most DO schools.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week.

Apple and Google operate out of mid-California and Socal. Obviously being born and raised in the real frozen north of California (Humboldt County), I am a genius ^.^

It is good that DO schools are continuing to improve their scores. I think that those of us becoming DO's in the next few years will be entering a time when DO's are much more widely accepted than they had been in the past. I'm all for it.

San Francisco has a lot of smart people, definitely more intelligent than Redneck areas of the country. I am becoming turned off from attending AZCOM because I found the locals to be a bunch of ignorant hillbillies, especially hearing constant anti-Mexican comments from locals.

I sincerely doubt the people of AZ want an elitist snob around anyway so it's win-win.

. He will have a rude awakening when he gets to Touro-CA.

I am not elitist. I just found some very disturbing racial undertones in Arizona, a lot of underlying racism there towards certain groups, especially Hispanics. There is some sheriff by the name of Arpaio that makes it his mission to terrorize illegal immigrants.

Bigotry is bigotry. Their bigotry is disturbing, but your elitist attitude in calling them rednecks and hillbillies and implying they're stupid is just as disturbing. Don't take the high ground if you're only doing it because the aim is better.

Well I find them to be idiots, let me guess your from some Hillbilly state? :)!!!

It's "you're" as in "you are", not "your" in this context. Man, even a hillbilly knows that.

There are good people and ignorant people everywhere. I live in the suburbs of NYC and I hear college-educated people saying some pretty racist and ignorant remarks. Don't do what you claim to hate which is generalize and stereotype.

Actually, I'm from Boston, and I find you to be extremely prejudiced and ignorant.

Nope, you can do that research for yourself.

What Touro CA is full of hillbillies and rednecks??! Somehow I doubt it, even the city council of Vallejo kept Walmart out of their town.

Hillbillies is the least of your problems at Touro CA.

I never said there were no racists in big cities but some small towns and some conservative regions of the US are clearly more prejudiced and many conservative politicians and journalists are blatantly racist. Some of the stuff on Fox News is super shocking. Ann Coulter for example gets away with saying a lot of bigoted things, and Ann is from New York.

So you're going to lock yourself into a small room because there are ignorant people?

I don't blame this person for not wanting to live in a conservative/more heavily racist part of the country. The culture actually does differ from town to town in America, and I've seen both the most liberal and most conservative parts of the country. I know which part I would rather live in. Nothing wrong with that.

So you're going to lock yourself into a small room because there are ignorant people?

No, absolutely not. I even listened to some of the hillbillies explain why they think the way they do, these guys make Nazis look reasonable. I work as a construction worker to pay my bills, one of my work mates and I ran into a Texan, my workmate flew into a rage when this guy said he was from Texas. He was about to kick this Texas guy's ass but I broke it up. You should have seen it, he flew into a rage, said the guy voted for Bush, caused the war in Iraq, etc. etc. Now that is unreasonable, me I simply don't want to associate with that kind of crowd, my friend on other hand wanted to punch someone in the face.

Maybe I was bit too harsh. I get what you're trying to say.

I'm part of an interracial relationship, and even up here in the north 10 minutes outside of NYC it's still pretty unusual. But overall it's accepted and no one really sees it as too out-of-the-ordinary. However, if I went to school in rural Tennessee, we would really stick out and I wonder how accepted it would be. So I prefer to stay near major cities on the east or west coasts.

Nevertheless, there are good people in small-town America, and I wouldn't put them all in one box. Like you even said, there are idiots in NYC as well.
