I see a lot of folks getting interviews and accepts from Michigan with fairly average stats and from out-of-state. I thought this was a very tough school to get into? Does anyone know about their admissions policy for dental schools as compared to undergraduate? I say this because I am a Michigan resident who will be doing my post-bacc most likely at MSU, and am very concerned about whether or not I can get in to UMich. Even though I am not a big fan of the institution (when the Gophers beat them in hockey the past two seasons in the tourney, I burned various Wolverine items in effigy), I am kinda stuck with it if I want to go soon and not pay out state or private tuition.

Part of my hate for Michigan stems from their undergrad admissions policies. Many of you are likely familiar with their current Supreme Court case and lawsuit from MI residents and taxpayers over their heavy weighting of "minority" groups in admissions. They add a massive chunk of "points" to the ratings of women (even though they are the 60-40 majority there already), minority groups (to include all races except Caucasian), and most gallingly, out of state and international applicants. They see themselves as the "private" school in the state, and think MSU is for the middle class, small town white males. Many good MI applicants are rejected in favor of weaker applicants from out of state. I look at a med school class photo and barely see a single white male in it. I was rejected from there four years ago with a 34 ACT and a 3.7 GPA, and all-conference basketball to boot. A minority girl in my class got in with a 3.2 and a 25. She was hardly disadvantaged, her family made more money than mine, that's for sure. My stats were good enough for Northwestern and Notre Dame...but not UMich. Ended up going to U of MN for financial and academic reasons, and I wouldn't have attended Michigan anyway, but still. It makes me gunshy about maintaining my MI residency and going for it, considering how bad they screwed me the first time. If you don't mind my asking, could the MI applicants reveal if they meet any of these groups? I know they love out of staters already (just my luck to be from the one state without protected admissions for taxpayers and residents), but is there more to it? Please don't construe my thoughts as racist. It just bothers me that I can be discriminated against based on factors that I cannot control, just as I am sure minority groups have faced such treatment in other areas of life.

you think white persons have it tough. asians esp. males have it the worst. for being a minority, we don't reap any benefits like preferential admissions. we need better stats than everyone else.

what happened between last year and this year.
i see soo many applicants from this thread that had less than avg stats (PAT 15?, QT 16 etc etc) and pretty low DAT's that got multiple acceptances.

we should have applied last year a guess. amazing how high the expectations have become in a matter one one application cycle.

Yes, but at this point thats all they are right now, expectations. Who knows if this application cycle will live up to the competitive hype that has been talked about for the last 5 months, or if it will be the same as previous years??

If I had to bet, I'd put my money on slightly higher entering GPAs and DATs at all schools. Or at the very least the same GPAs and DATs, but definately not lower.

Not true. The PAT scores is of minimal importance, and nearly every admissions committee will attest to this fact. It is more or less one of those things that doesn't really hurt an applicant, but can boost an applicant.

As far as the actual applicant you are referring to, you will note that they have been out of school for FIVE years prior to applying, have an overall GPA of 3.1, a DAT score of 21, and over 500 hours of assisting in dental procedures as well as OMS.

That applicant would STILL knock the socks off many of this years applicants.
