Staying for residency because you have to vs want to?

I'm having trouble deciding between several schools and in their match lists a lot of their students end up matching into their home program. However, I see myself going to hopefully a big city for residency and my med schools are probably not where I want to end up, even though they must be well ranked. Anyways, does anyone know if students that stay for residency stay because they wanted to stay, or because they couldn't get out, so to speak?
