Any pre-pharm people ever studied abroad or want to? I have been thinking about doing one, not sure when thought. Maybe to knock off my gen eds or something, I think it would be a cool experience. What about you all?

I responded to your other post about taking pre-req courses in summer. I also asked the lady in addmissions office in USC about studying abroad during summer (my school has this study abroad program that you can study in England for 8 weeks and get 12 quarter units in physics), she told me they will NOT give credit for that. You might want to check with the school you want to apply just to make sure you don't waste time and money.

I have also seen quite a few pharm schools that won't take study abroad/foreign credit for classes. Of course, if you take classes that you won't need to fulfill pharm school pre-reqs then it's no problem.

I didn't study abroad, but I worked in a research lab in England for a summer. It really is an amazing experience that I highly recommend. I encourage you to seek out living in a home of someone instead of just hanging out with a group of Americans. I can't tell you how many American exchange students I saw all summer that really didn't get the culture because they just hung out with their American friends. To me there's no point in spending 6k to spend a month doing what you could do at home.

I studied abroad while in high school and college and it was the best experience ever, I highly recommend doing it. As far as getting credit for pre-pharm courses abroad that's probably not going to happen, so go and take other classes like languages, poli sci or histories. Studying abroad is a great way to travel and see the world and it also broadens your horizons and changes your view of the US. I highly, highly recommend it!!

Yea I was thinking about taking some gen eds when I study abroad.

I'm looking at taking Microbiology abroad in Poland over the summer. It's the one prereq that my school offers abroad. I've already taken a 3-credit micro course, but some schools want a 4-credit course.

I studied abroad in New Zealand for a semester, and had no problems with the credits being accepted by pharmacy schools, because the classes were listed on my US college transcript. I believe that most pharm schools will accept the classes if they were accepted by your university. It is the foreign transcripts that would put you in a tough position. I say absolutely study abroad, but make sure that your US college will accept the classes for transfer, and will list them on your transcript.

I think the 4-credit micro course includes the micro lab, so it's 3 credits for the lecture, 1 credit for the lab.
