Hey everyone,

I am currently studying for my MCAT which I will be taking on May 20. Originally I had felt good about it because for MD schools, it takes a while to verify your app so I could start it in May and have it submit June 20 following verification and score release.

However, I just called AACOMAS and they said that their application would open May 4 and be available for submission. Does this put me at a big disadvantage if I don't submit theirs until June 20 since it's another month behind?

Thanks for any help or insight.

June and early July are still considered early. For DO and many MD, complete by later July/August/Sept is considered on time. One major DO school adcom at my university told me that only about 35% of their total applications were complete prior to mid-July and the majority completed August/Sept. Quite a few of those are instantly tossed out for low gpa, poor MCAT, insufficient rec letters, etc but 1/3 complete can still mean 1000 plus viable applications to sort through. By end of Sept a school can easily have 5000 applications and expect another 1000 by end of cycle. By Aug/Sept spots have already started to be offered/filled and since they have so many apps schools become more picky, so earlier is definitely better but June should be fine.

I was complete mid-July due to June MCAT, but submitted my app prior to my MCAT score being released and had II's plus accepted by end of Sept.

Depending who you ask this is early or right on time. Not late by any means.

No. Definitely not late. As long as you can get your secondaries submitted by end of July/mid-August and be complete by then, you're fine. It definitely helps that you submit earlier though.

Not late at all my man. Great date though (that's my birthday!)

I wasn't complete until... December. No, not even joking. My cycle went fine, although bumpy. You'll be fine also.

I will say though that my experience wasn't typical, and I wonder how many opportunities I lost because of my late submission, so definitely submit by June.

Even November isn't late!

Do you not buy into the 'apply as early as possible' mantra? Or does that only matter for allopathic schools?

I'm still a fan of applying early, as the mindset of our wily old Admissions dean is "if you don't accept this kid now, s/he will get snapped up elsewhere."

But it's far more important to apply when you have the best possible package, as the timing for DO schools is more liberal than MD schools.

Ditto that from Goro.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to apply before they are ready. The process has too many layers to have someone accidentally slip through. Early isn't going to make a 2.9 GPA or 495 MCAT OK. Where waiting 3 months for summer class grades or mcat retake might just make you a really good 3.4/505 candidate.

I applied in July with an okay MCAT and good GPA and got 4 II's to DO programs and one II to an MD program. So far I've received one acceptance but I feel as clueless and mesmerized by the process as I did last year.

It's not too late. Submitted my primary in October and secondary in December.

Good luck!

Can you start your app and go back to it as you need during a certain amount of time before you officially submit?
