Hey guys-

Since my dad was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's 🙁, I have decided to make some changes in my path to vet school. I currently live about two hours from Madison, WI. I have since decided that it will be my one and only school that I apply to due to the family stuff and not knowing how the disease will progress. Also, my bf (of 3.5 years) have been living in my home town (New London) for a couple of years and he has started to move up in his job...and I think he actually like it. I just feel like it wouldn't be fair to him to uproot us again (he moved back to my hometown with me 2.5 years ago) for vet school, when my plan is to come back to the area afterward. My thought (when I get to that point) is to get an apartment to spend at school during the week and then go home on weekends (or the bf to come down by me).

This situation is clearly not ideal for a relationship etc., but as many have said, it can be successful if you want it to be. So.....can anyone vouch for a situation like this actually working out? I know there are some commuters out there!!

Thanks everyone!! 😀

IMO, that is a totally acceptable solution. As an undergrad, I did have a dorm room but was essentially a commuter. School was a 70 mile (one way) trip, and by the end of the first semester I was doing it every day anyway. After freshman year I didn't even bother with a dorm room, but I don't think that part would be a wise move with vet school 😀.

Of course, depending on your (and your bf's) love for driving, you could always get an apt in between your school and his work, and that would also make your trips home shorter. Would be tougher on the pocketbook though.

When the time comes, you could also check around to see if any current students would want a part-time roommate? I know I'd be pretty pleased with a situation like that, and I know my roommate from freshman year was quite happy to have the place to herself so often!

Good thinking, Tastrophe! 🙂 When that time comes in 3 or more years (hope it goes by fast!), I will probably look for a part-time roommate. Hopefully, that person will love big dogs since I have 2 giant breeds and plan on them coming with me during the week. They are my dogs and my responsibility. I don't think I could be without my bf, cats, and dogs at one time!

Two or three of my classmates did just the sort of thing you were propposing this year. I think it worked reasonably well for them.
