Hey, Everyone!

I'll be starting as freshman undergrad this coming fall and I was looking ahead for some research opportunities that I could possibly be eligible for NEXT summer.

I ran across one called: Summer Medical Dental Education Program. Which specifically mentions minorities and economically disadvantaged students. (I fall in neither of those groups.) Is it possible they would accept me into that program? Are there other similar programs? Any ideas I would great appreciate! I'm planning to shadow different dental specialists throughout this summer.

In November, the application for SMDEP comes out. It's not really research, but it's a great opportunity to spend 6 weeks at a dental/medical school, get to know faculty, and be exposed to the life of a dental student. Plus, they say the program looks good on your application since it's nationally recognized.

Edit: I literally only read the first sentence before seeing your comment on smdep lol. They favor minorities for the program, but that won't stop you from getting accepted. We had quite a few caucasians at my program last summer. I would recommend applying anyways.

Do a summer dental program at a dental school. Tons of schools have them. I did a week long program at Stony Brook and it was awesome.

Edit: didn't realize you said research specifically. Dental schools don't really care if you do research or not but to each his/her own.

SMDEP isn't really a program for researching. I did the one at Rutgers two summers ago. It's more of an enrichment program to learn more about dentistry and to take extra classes that are meant to help you.
You don't have to do research that is dental specific. Look at the different research that is happening at your school and ask if you can volunteer in those projects if something interests you.
