I am a freshman and really want to work in dentistry over my summers leading up to dental school. First, I want to gain experience; I want to see and be a part of a dental office environment, learn more about the processes of dental surgery and dental care, and learn what all goes into a dental practice. Second, having dental experience on my application would really help my chances of getting in to dental school. And, finally, most dental jobs will have decent pay ($10-15) for a poor college student. The only two jobs I can think to do are being a dental assistant or working in a dental lab. I do not have any certifications (but I know how/where to get them) and I can only really work during the 3.5 months of summer break and maybe 1 month for winter break. I understand that dentists really would rather have more experienced, full time workers; however, they also want to help out the youth of pre-dentists. So, hiring pre-dental students is usually a tough decision for them; it does not really help there business, but does help out the pre-dental student.
How exactly do you approach a dentist or dental technician asking for a job? Most people say to just shadow some of your local dentists then ask them if you could possibly work there for the summer. I have done this a couple times now and each time I could tell that the dentist really didn't have a position open, but didn't want to say no, so they just said that we will see if something opens up. Is that just the best option? Do you just shadow dentists then pop the question to them, hoping that they may possibly say yes? And for the dentists or dental lab technicians that you don't get a chance to shadow should I just go around to every dental office or lab left in the area and ask for a job (bringing a cover letter and resume, telling them my situation)? Or, can I just mail my cover letter and resume to them that explains my situation to them. Because going around to each dental office or lab can be inefficient and there's a chance that I may not even get to speak with the dentist to ask them personally (and tell them my situation), as they may be busy or the receptionist may just say that there are not positions here.
What do you think?

Most college students that I know of who work as lab techs or assistants are certified through schooling usually one of those schools that you here about where people want to go back to school as a career change or earn a 2 year degree so this doesnt sound like you.

Some other people (very small percentage) have family members who are dentists or close friends whose parents are dentists and they get in that way and this does not happen alot. It is one of those things where u just have to know someone.

I would say that for you to be hired as one would be a great challenge because some people are dental assistants and thats their full time job so theyll always beat you too it and established practices will always have a full staff the majority of the time.

I would try hospitals in your surrounding area and see if they offer technician jobs in the dental departments (i know not all hopsitals have this but this is porobably your best bet. You would be required to be certified or maybe they could help you with it

I recently got a lab tech job. I walked in at the beginning of the semester and told him that I had put my class all on Tuesday and Thursday (I had a monday night class but knew that wouldn't interfere). He said they didn't have anything open during the summer as these are slower months (Especially in AZ), but would let me know. A guy decided to quit and he called me up right away. I now work three days a week and its a pretty good gig. I started by asking my dentist what lab's they use and for a contact name. Then I walked in and asked for that particular person and told them my story and the dentist that recommended I work in a lab before dental school. People will never get the jobs they don't go in and ask for. Just walk in and ask. Most are nice enough to listen to your story and some may even show you around a little even if they don't currently have a job open. Good luck!

Maybe a temp job as a dental assistant?

If you don't have a vagina forget about assisting....ain't going to happen.

Working as a lab tech? Buy a block of wax and carve a #19....if you can't you may as well forget about working in a dental lab.

I found a job without any sort of dental education by calling all of the dental clinics in my area and asking if I could volunteer. Clinics are a lot more promising than private practices for these type of things. One of the clinics I called actually interviewed me and offered me a position as a Dental Clerk for a summer fluoride program.
