Okay, so I have my housing set, lease signed thru July 1, 2012, but nothing as far as financial situation is set up yet. I'm having second thoughts about going to UCSF 🙁 and I'm considering switching back to UCLA. IS this a bad idea as of June 9th, 2011??

Well, yeah it sounds bad. You'll have to eat your entire year long lease.

second guessing your decision is just going to be a slippery slope. whatever the d-school equivalent of "cold feet" is, is probably a normal feeling now that the reality of school starting soon has set in. it was surely a tough choice, but it's one where there is no wrong answer. you made a choice, stick to it. even if you flip back, you'll only be second guessing that decision the first time you have a bad day at UCLA. you were already "decisive"...now force yourself to follow through.

There's no way to answer this question without more details. Like, "Why do you want to switch back?"

Without knowing anything other than "I locked in my lease", yes, it's a terrible idea - you locked in your lease.

Stay at UCSF, both are good schools and it would be a pain x10 to switch now.

At a minimum haha.

Go with your gut and stay at UCSF it's an awesome school in an awesome city!

You can get out of your lease. I own two rental properties in California so I am familiar with the law.

In order to break your lease you provide a letter to your landlord stating you want to move out and then they are legally obligated to look for a new tenant. You are responsible for paying rent until they find one, which may be right away or may take a month or two. They are NOT allowed to charge you any fees for moving out early except to reimburse them for reasonable advertising costs to find a new tenant (which are usually nothing because Craigslist is free although they may try to squeeze a few bucks out of you here).

This law is aggravating if you are a landlord but the government definitely favors renters in California.

Good luck with your decision!

hmm good little nugget to know, but that lease is still just the tip of the iceberg in all this...you're just asking for a crapload of extra trouble if you try to pull off a switch. what did you decide by the way?

I'd like to point out for anyone else who might read this thread that landlord laws vary by state. What is true in CA may not be true elsewhere.

how are you going to switch schools now? werent the deposits due a month after you received your acceptance?

we had someone drop out of the UCSF IDP on the morning of the start of the program.

As in, Monday morning 7 am for a 8 am start.

I bet NO ONE here will forget that name for the rest of their professional lives.

if you plan to switch - do it ASAP. or dont do it at all.

I haven't done anything yet. The person I intend on spending the rest of my life with lives and works in LA. I chose UCSF, he's having difficulty switching jobs and probably won't until after the first 1-2 years I'm in SF (we've already been doing distance for 3 years), hence, my second-guessing myself now. I'm feeling selfish for not choosing the school that would make our relationship work.

Why did you choose UCSF?

Tell your landlord and chances are someone else will want take over your lease. If you have no co-signer, there's nothing preventing you from not paying if you don't want to like a lot of people. Millions of people stopped paying their mortgage in Cali and guess what happens to them...nothing.

Thanks for everyone's opinions. It's an ugly situation, it will work itself out. I'm going to stick with UCSF and if things are meant to be they'll be.
