I am an intern who matched into a prelim position at a middle of the road academic program. I would now like to switch into IM (did not match into derm). However, I care about the program I attend as I want to do a fellowship in the future. After vacillating for a bit on my future, I decided that I did not go into medicine to give up direct patient contact. My stats are as follows:
Step 1: 222
Step 2: 262
Step 3: yet to be taken
Med school rank: 3rd quartile
IM grade in med school: high pass (about average for my school, which is a top 25 school)
I would be applying for a PGY-2 position. What are the chances that a top 20 IM program in the nation would have a PGY-2 opening and my stats will be competitive enough for this.
I have two strong letters of recs from my intern year so far, working on a third. Also working on my PS.
