I want to email a school to tell them that I will be in the area so that they may give me an interview there. However, the school that I will be going to is ranked higher according to US news. Is it going to hurt my chances at the school that I am going to ask for an interview?

I am afraid that the lower ranked school might give up and say that " this applicant is interviewing at a higher ranked school and why should we waste an interview spot on him since he will likely accept the offer from the higher ranked med school, if given an offer."

Please advice me on this. Should I ask for an interview or just let them decide when they get to my application?

Thanks

I think you should ask without telling them which school you are interviewing at.

Like if you're going to interview at Northwestern, you could ask UIC, but say you are going to a school interview in Chicago on this date, I was wondering.... I would be a little more hesistant if you're going to ask the school that is more superior than the school you are interviewing at.

This is not particularly risky. The worst a school can do is say no - many of them are more than willing to pull your file, take a look, and see if they can accommodate you. It's worth a shot! 🙂

I don't think any medical schools have THAT much of an inferiority complex to other schools. I don't think you should worry about rankings at all.

In fact, I think the "lower ranked" school will be glad such a great applicant applied to their school and will be excited to try and show you why they're great.

Or you could just not mention the name of the other school. That would be fine too.

just say you will happen to be in the area, and ask if there is a chance your application can be reviewed if they will grant you an interview, since it would save you a huge deal.

they dont really give a **** as to why.

just ask nicely since you are asking them for a favor. Ive tried that before, and gotten a flat out "no" from each one. from this experience, i wouldnt get my hopes up, but its always worth a try.

edit: this place would be a lot cooler if we could swear. i mean granted they thread titles could still be off limits, but come on...

If we were about to send you an e-mail invitation for interview, then we might get that e-mail out faster but in general, calling to say that you are in the area isn't going to speed up the review process. In the end, if you really want to attend the medical school interview, you will come back. If not, you won't and thus meeting your schedule is not particularly of importance for us. The ranking of the medical schools that you apply to or interview at is of not use or interest to us. We just don't care about individual applicant in that manner.

Haha. This is the harsh but true reality. I guess I better go book my ticket for my third trip out to California. This process is so expensive... 🙁

Well, I know Morehouse puts on their website that you can send a letter to inquire about an interview if you will be in the Atlanta area. I do have another interview in Atlanta so I sent them a letter- I sent it two weeks ago and no reply so far, but its the holidays so I figured that probably has something to do with it.
