Tennesse?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, I have procrastinated getting a hotel for my interview on Friday. Anyway I was wondering if there is an area of Knoxville that I should steer away from getting a hotel due to safety, or if the Knoxville area in pretty safe everywhere. I was looking at the Red Roof Inn on Central Avenue Pike. Thanks and looking forward to my trip and interview!

North Knoxville should be fine. I haven't been to that particular part, but a lot of students live up there and it's very convenient to school.

Good luck at your interview! :luck:

I don't know that hotel, but I live to the northwest in the Powell area and there are several hotels on Emory that are less than 20 minutes from the school that are very nice. I wouldn't worry too much, as the north is generally a good area.

New to the site (found the forum so helpful I had to join 😀). I have my interview on the 17th (OOS).

OSS my interview is on Wednesday. My hotel is in Downtown. Flying in with a long layover flight , but hey it was cheaper. Flying home the same night. How long after the interview must we stay? How long are the interviews?

how did the interviews go today? hope they went well!!! 🙂

I think the interviews went well yesterday. People came out saying they were really low stress. The only thing they are asking this year that I don't remember from last year is a current event question. As in, "What's going on in the world right now that you're interested in aside from vet med?" So it might behoove you to take a look at cnn.com or something to get an idea of what's going on in the wider world. I'd just like to stress again that they're really trying to get to know you, not throw you off or anything.

Here's how the day goes:
9 AM Dean Brace (the dean of students) gives a talk about what to expect in the interview, the history of the school, and the admissions process in general.

9:30 AM A student-led tour of the vet school starts. It takes about a half hour, so if you have a 10 AM interview, I'd suggest going on a later tour.

After that there are snacks in the Sequoia Room upstairs. There will be current students hanging out all day to talk to you and tell you about your interview team and answer questions about the school. If you didn't get a tour in the morning, then feel free to ask one of the students to give you one--this applies if you come in later too. If you come in the morning for the info session/tour and don't have an interview til the afternoon, you are free to leave and come back. People go over to The Strip (a section of Cumberland Ave. near the university) or downtown if you have a little more time for lunch, as lunch will not be served. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions or just post here.

The interviews last about 25 minutes. Don't be too nervous about your interviews and good luck!! :luck::luck::luck:

Zoo is Dr. Schumacher and Dr. Ramsey, actually, but both are cool, informed people that like talking to students.

I will be there March 19th for interviews all day if any SDNers are there. I'm also available if you have any questions (a welcome break to studying). Congrats to all who got an interview.
Hi Dyachei, I am an OOSer interviewing on March 19th and it sounds like there is only one tour each day at 9:00AM?

My flight doesn't get in until 9:30 AM... do you think there might be a current student available that day who could show me around the hospital and classrooms a little? If so, please let me know how to get ahold of him or her and thank you!

There will be students around all day to give tours. You should be able to find them in the Sequoia Room. The people who check you in will show you where that is. See my above post for more info.

yeah, the tour and such is pretty informal/low-stress. There was only one info session, but you could probably get that info from one of the current students that will be around--they're all REALLY helpful. Dean Brace was really approachable and welcoming, so there's definitely no intimidation factor there.

I wonder if it's a bad sign that I didn't get the "what's going on in the world?" question...

I was wondering the same thing, Moonpaw. I had my interview Friday morn, and it was just like we were having lunch, not an interview. A UTK grad that I work with (c/o 2000) said that when she interviewed they asked her a bunch of questions that had nothing to do with vet med...turns out it was because she was a shoe-in! That makes me hopeful, but still nervous... I don't know if I'll be able to make it through the next couple of weeks to hear back from them!!! :scared:

Did those of you who interviewed get a tour of the new hospital wing? We are really expanding out exotics facilities. I am just curious if it was ready to show off and if we got our MRI machine in yet. I guess when I am back in town, I will check it out myself, but maybe you can satisfy my curiosity.

Unfortunately, critter, the door is still locked. But it should be open in time for the 3rd years to go to clinics on April 21. I would've liked to see it too. In addition to the MRI, there will be a linear accelerator. I didn't know that until I heard Dean Brace talking that morning. See you next week!

Moonpaw and puppydogtails, try not to worry too much. I remember playing my interview over and over again in my head this time last year. Hopefully the two weeks will fly by and soon we'll be school-mates. Good luck!! :luck::luck::luck:

Thanks. That's right, they are greatly expanding oncology as well as exotics. Exciting times!

aww, thanks! It's just that...well, I really haven't been having much luck this admissions cycle, and I don't know if I can get my hopes up and then be disappointed again. All those rejections are messing with my head 🙁 Forget saying anything; I don't even want to think anything for fear of jinxing myself.

Returned yesterday from my trip to UTK. I really enjoyed myself and found the interview to be extremely fair. Some of the questions were challenging, some were not. Questions about me, questions about my opinions... Overall I felt those who interviewed me got a VERY good idea of who I was in the half hour. go UTK!

I just got home from mine tonight - I totally agree designer vet! The school was wonderful. And the interview was really fair - they definitely asked some hard questions but they were interesting ones that related to what I know. They even were curious about my fav racehorses! I feel like UTK goes out of their way to get to know YOU, not just facts on the sheet. :biglove: Super nice.

And thanks pressmom for being a great hostess and dyachei for the tour! 😀

I loooooooove UTCVM. I was the very last interview of the whole interview process! Waiting around was hard (because I had more time to get nervous!- my interview wasn't until 4:30) But, it was very laid back and they made a point not to intimidate. The facilities were super cool, and I loved the necropsy room. I got a chance to talk to Dr. Newkirk about the path program, and she was super cool and helpful. My interviewers were Dr. New, Dr. Schumacher, and Dr. Doherty. All 3 were very nice too! So, it is true, I agree that UTCVM interview process is very low stress, and everyone is there to help you.

Now I just have to pray I get in!

Do you remember who interviewed you?

I had Dr. Schumacher, Dr. New, and Dr. Phillips, I believe.

I really can't think about this right now...I'm in London right now, to visit family and check out RVC, the only other school to which I was accepted. As awesome as it is to be in London, I would actually rather go to UT, but every time I think about it and the possibility (probability, really) that I'll be rejected, I get this sinking feeling in my stomach.

And that necropsy room really was awesome! I was probably in there for an hour before my interview (it was at 3:30 and I had been there since 9).

I will think positive thoughts for both of you. And what a cool interview team! I left my interview last year in tears, sure I would not get in, so you just never know.
