Texans with only 1 out of 3 Texas Interviews

Roll call! Only one here for me. I'm getting scared :scared:

Me too! I interviewed at Baylor pretty early so I really have no clue what Baylor saw in me and what Houston / San Antonio didn't. Oh well, I really wouldn't mind going to Baylor. It's a great school and it's cheap.

Ive only heard from Baylor as well. My interview is on Nov. 14. Hopefully the other schools are just slow to respond.

Any of you guys mind sharing your stats?

Only Houston so far. I'm wondering what the deal is with S.A., and Baylor.

San Antonio only currently. With only 7 weeks until Dec 1st I doubt I will hear from Houston or Baylor at this point.

I am 95% sure that Baylor isn't interviewing me because when I called to check my status they told me my DAT science scores are a little low for what they like to see and that they wanted me to have current DAT scores. I asked the ADA and was told I could use my DAT from 2006, but it appears Baylor doesn't follow that rule. I am not the only one who has heard that either, so I know it true. I have a friend (on here) who was told the same thing.

Houston is Houston. I think they are having a rough year... but who knows?

I think that's crazy that you got an interview at San Antonio but not at Baylor or Houston. Why do you think that is?

Only Baylor. At my interview everyone was in the same boat, except for one person who had all 3.

I finished my app process at the beginning of Sept. and about 3 weeks later I got an interview w/ San Antonio. No word from any other schools at the moment (I applied to 15 schools), but my LOR from a practicing dentist was submitted last minute. I know that Baylor doesn't have it yet. I don't think I have checked my mailbox this many times since I was 13 waiting on my X-Ray glasses!!! 😀

Still no word from SA or Houston...Going on the 4th week since they received my apps. Whats goin' on??

It is called the numbers game. Still, 1 interview trumps none.

Care to elaborate?

Let's say gpa ~3.8 (3.6); dat ~20/20/20 might get you (3) interviews even if application was completed say mid September. This should be evident upon review of scores for 06 entering class.

Only San Antonio here too... I haven't heard from Bayor or Houston... I have no idea what's up... I'll keep crossing my fingers though.. with any luck they might go back to the beginning of the pile?? (I know.. wishful thinking)

What do you say when you call to check your status?? I haven't heard from any schools still... ughhh. I was done Aug. 1st with my DAT but had to wait until Aug. 25th to get an interview from my pre-professional advisory committee and then it took them close to 5 weeks to write and send off my evaluation. Will schools evaluate your application before they receive the advisory committee letter? Part of me hopes not - and that is the reason I have not yet heard from any schools. Texas schools have had my application since early June, my DAT scores since Aug. 1st and my committee letter for just under 3 weeks.

I just called Baylor and asked them about the status of my application. I had interviewed with SA already and it seemed odd not to hear from Baylor too considering my volunteer experience in their labs at the school, my grades, and etc... I just wanted to make sure the letter wasn't lost or something.

Anyway, the office person looked up my file and told me that basicly I probably wouldn't get an interview because of three things... First, I have an old DAT score from 2006. Second, I have low science scores and they rely heavily on those scores. Last, I am not a science major and I don't have 3000 level sciences.... even though I have Anatomy, Genetics, Microbio etc... they want 3000 level plus...

Dude, I think that's crazy. I've heard that they really look heavily at your TS score but I didn't think that it mattered that much. I don't have a great GPA/sGPA but they interviewed me I think because I have lots of upper level sciences and did well on my TS. It just stinks because because it seems Baylor is the only school that looks at that with a lot of weight. You would think SA and Houston would too! Anyway, good luck at SA if you get in. That's a great school with a great reputation. You'll do great there.

i called houston and they told me that they give out the interveiws til Feb

Having those upper level sciences and high TS is a huge deal with Baylor. I think the same goes for Houston. What is really sad, and no offense to the person who has this, but on predents there is someone with a 3.2 GPA and just average TS scores who interviewed at Baylor according to the site. I worked pretty hard to get my GPA to a 3.6, and though my TS are just ok, I am not a science major so my score were pretty good considering… and I plan on taking more sciences in the spring…. So it is not like I will not have some upper level sciences… That just kind of gets me mad.

What is really crazy about all this is my friend has not interviewed at Baylor either and they have great TS scores! The old DAT score was the excuse given to them. According to ADA rules the DAT is good for 4 years. I even called to confirm this… Mine and my friend's are both only 2 years old. I think Baylor opens themselves up for possible problems by actually saying they hold or table files because of old DAT scores. I would think there would be some legal issues involved if you are not following what ADA says. Just a thought…

Anyway, I have volunteered at Baylor, know a ton of students and profs and love the school; but, I really think SA is the place for me after my interview. I need a change of pace. I am kind of tired of the Dallas scene at this point. Don’t get me wrong though, given the chance I will go to wherever they say yes! Haha!

Well, he/she could be a minority. No offense should be taken at all by said person because I think that a lot of the minority communities need more representation. I actually thought that Baylor (area around dental schoool) was pretty shady if you ask me. I would love to go there though because they're big into technology, they're cheap, and have digitalized they're curriculum which is the growing trend in dental schools. San Antonio's the cheapest though, they just hate my guts because of of QR score and perhaps my undergrad GPA/sGPA. Doesn't seem like they're really interviewing anybody with less than a 3.6ish GPA or sGPA. Baylor seems like they have more than a couple guys with less than average GPA/sGPA's but they make up for it with higher DAT scores. Good luck!

If the usual sequence, application, interview, acceptance, doesn't net results, there is always a chance for redress through litigation.

The ADA administers the DAT and beyond that it claims no jurisdiction over the dental school application process. How recent the DAT scores need to be is at the discretion of adcoms. Demanding more recent scores may be their way of ascertaining whatever perceived improvement any additional course work may have on the applicant's ability to handle dental school.

A 3.6 gpa is certainly better than a 3.2. By the same token a 19/19/19 and a 19/20/20 is better than 18/17/18.

I was told during my interview that the TS (especially the bio section) is a big factor in their decision process. How did you score in the science sections? Anyway I hope this helps!! Good Luck!

21, and apparently it's not helping me with SA and Houston.

but are you a texas resident? i thought you were not.....maybe i'm wrong

I reapplied for my residency with Budge Mayberry and got accepted...I just haven't updated my predents yet. I got the letter before I was invited to Baylor too.

how long after the schools received your application did ya'll receive invites?

I submitted like May 10nth for TMDSAS and heard back in July from Baylor for an August interview.

It took the schools a couple weeks to receive my app. from TMDSAS and I received confirmation that Baylor got my app. on 9/27 and received my interview invite in the mail about 3 days after that. So it seems that Baylor is pretty quick at getting their invites out.

What's Budge Mayberry? I want to apply for residency next year and don't know much about the process.

Budge Mayberry (I think that's how you spell it) is the name of the guy is the main guy in charge of evaluating your residency status in Texas. If you call TMDSAS they will send you to him. He is a really nice guy and will guide you through the process of establishing residency if you really are one. Good luck!

Just got San Antonio today 😀 . I was getting kinda scared but I submitted pretty late (mid september)

Oh it's a guy! I thought you were naming some place. Good to know.

Hey, anyone know that chances of getting into a school with only one interview?

Any updates guys?

None for me. I'll just be waiting...hopefully...for the infamous Baylor email on November 30th. Apparantely, I will not be hearing back from Houston or San Antonio anytime soon. Good luck!

Hey denticus, you can have my spot at Baylor (I didn't get an interview there) and I will take your spot at San Antonio (my only interview so far). That seems fair because we both get accepted! Ha!

Sounds good. Yeah, I think that that is so weird though. Just goes to show the extent that dental schools differ in their selectivity for potential dental students. Hope to hear good news from you soon. Good luck

Only one interview from San Antonio for me, haven't heard anything from houston and baylor...what might be the matter since it seems like lots of people are in this kind of situation.

Maybe the schools just utterly hate each other in that once a student interviews at one school...say Baylor...then San Antonio and Houston, who incidentally hate Baylor, will not send out an interview invite to that student with hopes to prevent a Baylor contamination of their school....and vice versa. Just my little conspiracy theory of "no interview invite" bitterness.

I must be lucky then, since I applied sorta late. I was actually a bit surprised I got Baylor since they were waiting on a LOR. I'm wondering what sort of criteria thes schools are lookin for ... it seems like theres no rhyme or reason to it.

It is not a question of luck. Maybe the stats had something to do with netting 3 interviews.

So have you heard somewhere that they send an e-mail notifying you of entrance?

Baylor sent out an email last year on December 1st saying my acceptance letter is on the way.

Received an email yesterday from Houston for an interview on the 7th! I had only previously heard from San Antonio and interviewed this past monday.
