I have interviews at Houston, Galveston, and San Antonio this month but feel a little strange attending the pre-night socials because I'm 44. Did anyone that attended the socials notice if there were any older pre-meds present.

You might feel better at the Houston one if you go its in a bar and very casual. The UTMB one is in Chili's and we sat down and ate and there were less med students. I only noticed people in their twenties at both, but if you feel uncomfortable going then wait till your interview day on the tours or panels you can get most of your student type questions answered. You won't miss something major if you don't go to the socials. I have no idea about UTSA though = no interview for me

The San Antonio one looks very casual, too. The Flying Saucer a casual bar and you can sit outside and eat/drink. Eh, that may not be such a good thing with the heat... They also supposedly have a good selection of beer, but I'm a minor so I wouldn't know. If you get bored, it's at an outdoor mall so you can go shopping. 😀

AggieJohn, we will both tear the place up! I heard from them too for 9/8!

EDIT: Congrats to pkboi and quantummechanic, and anyone else that heard from Baylor too!

Thanks bro, I actually just passed by Two Rows last night and my friend told me that on Wednesdays they have dollar beer night. Anyone in for a pre-pre-interview social? 😀

i'd be down for that if I weren't from so far away

Ana - How did the interview in Galveston go? Did you like the school and your interviewers?

My first one was awesome.. but the second guy wasn't much of a conversationalist... he just smiled a lot and talked about UTMB... he was the admissions committee chair so HOPEFULLY he liked me....

Anyone else have San Antonio tomorrow? Also... is tomorrow, the 14th, the first interview day at San Antonio?

Tomorrow is the 13th...but the 14th I beleive is the first interview date at San Antonio...I will be there!

At Galveston, both my interviews were in the morning so I was done early. The campus tour ended around 2pm and lasted about an hour or so.

There wasn't a single SDNer on my table - where were ya'all? BTW I asked the first question during the student panel when they were handing out the prizes.

See ya'all at the night before social tomorrow at San Antonio!

Hey Y --- So did your interviews go well?? Both seem interested and enthusiastic or one seem not interested at?? I had one of each....

I still think it went well, but it sucks because I just keep replaying the interviews in my head... wondering how the second interviewer will score me on the sheet sent to the committee (he was also the admissions chair so it's kinda scary)....

I'll be there! Yes, I think it is the first, but today is only Saturday, the 12th!

Yeah I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Since I'm leaving for SA tomorrow I guess I wasn't thinking. I'll see you all Monday!

Is anyone planning on going to a lecture before the interview day starts on Monday at San Antonio? I looked at the schedule, and it looks like the only thing available is Becoming a Doctor from 9-10. It sounds like a good opportunity to see what lectures are like, but I'm not sure if I want to go.

I think I may go. Im not sure yet though. I'm staying with two MSII girls the night before so if they leave early for class I might as well go.

One of my interviewers was slightly difficult to understand. He didn't speak English very well. Another odd thing - he seemed to have printed out a list of questions to ask and was using it when it came time to ask the next question. Nothing wrong with this - just a little different then other interviews.

The second guy - we seemed to have connected at one point, though his questions were the deep sea fishing type.

I wouldn't worry too much about the interviews. I'm sure you did well enough to get in. Good Luck and see ya'all in SA.

Is the lecture in the same buildling? I might swing by for a while. We don't need to be back for registration till 9:30am right?

They are in the same building, and registration is from 9:30-10. But, the class is from 9-9:50, and I think I'd be kind of worried about leaving the lecture early.

I'm just remembering how a student from UT Houston said all the students would clap if someone walked into a lecture late. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about - if I go I'll probably stay for the whole lecture and then just make sure I'm in the back so I can leave quickly for registration.

The prof started asking my buddy a question in the middle of the lecture when he was interviewing at TCOM. He was presenting some case on heart related ailment and asked him what he thought was the disease process.

'cmon it should be fun. I'm thinking sit in for the first 10 minutes or so.

I thought they went well. I got totally lost going to my second one but the woman said she wouldn't hold it against me. Too bad too - We made a real connection I think. She was into primary care as well.

Y_Marker: Were you there friday? I didn't realize that.

I was the obnoxious girl who asked the panel how much debt they were in

I was seated on the front left side of the room and I heard that question, but didn't turn around. The response from the pedi girl did suprise me when she said that she is close to maxing out her loans. That's a lot of $$$ esp if you consider unsub stafford.

I was the girl that won the red lunch box.

Hey guys,

Is anyone here going to the UTSA interview tommorow (Monday, 14th)? I have accepted my interview there and made arrangements, but I don't know any of the details because the packet that was sent hasn't arrived. I would call but it is Sunday. Can anyone tell me what time and where we will be meeting? I would appreciate it a whole bunch 🙂

I recieved both email and snail.

The email said the letters were sent out late and they wanted to let everyone know as soon as possible... hence the email, so I'm not sure if it was a one time deal because of mail mix up or if they will continue to email.

I don't think calling can hurt you. I would just call and ask if they send invites via email or snail and explain that you are not recieving mail currently.

This is good... looks like I get to meet dancer and aggiejohn and wannadoc tomorrow in SA, then jota and aggiejohn and quantummechanic and pkboi on the 8th in Houston! I only get to do the Baylor bit if the Air Force lets me reschedule some duty days I'd planned to do, we'll have to see. I'll be the one in the black skirt-suit and sensible shoes. 🙄

I'm very nervous about my first interview... :scared:

EDIT: Everybody get to the airport super-early... these new security regs take some time to enforce. They confiscated my eyedrops and lip gloss, too, so put no-kidding EVERYTHING that ever remotely resembles a liquid in your checked luggage.

Any of you made it to the social tonight @ Flying Saucer? We should write our screen name on your hello cards.

I was the guy with the smily face on his hello badge.

Anyone up for b'fast @ Taco Cabana let me know.

See you at the interview!

No, wasn't there. Big social events full of strangers aren't really relaxing for me. See you guys tomorrow!

Hey, congrats Pemberly! Hopefully you can get that day off so I can finally meet you.

I used to just tell everybody that I would be easy to pick out of the crowd because I would be the only old guy there. While it's true that I was the only old guy (to my knowledge) at both of my interviews so far, I had some people not believe that I was actually as old as I am. Totally made my day.

Although I'm late, I want to wish everyone here in SA the best of luck! :luck: Consider yourselves lucky, the weather is finally somewhat pleasant here today.

Be sure to let us know how it goes...oh, and how they're handling rolling admission. 🙂 Impatience is a virtue today.

Congrats to those interviewing in Texas!

I am fairly new to SDN (first post, although I have been browsing through threads on and off this past month).

I'd love to hear how Texas interviews are going for those of you that have gotten them. I have a couple this month myself.

Best of luck to everybody!

Finally my first interview!!! UT-SA on the 28th. I'm missing my first day of classes but it's cool. I'm heading back home for my first interview 😀

Congrats! but i'm a little confused. UT-SA is your first interview, yet you're heading back home from your first interview? I think your excitement kinda got you lost somewhere 😀. Congrats nevertheless.

Yea, I was a bit excited when I posted. I forgot to mention that I am working in Houston right now (I go to Rice) but am from San Antonio. So yea, I'll be returning home for a few days for my first interview 😉

Haha, actually my mistake, I read it as "I'm heading home FROM my first interview" rather than "...for..." 😳

I am doing a rural track interview at TCOM that requires shadowing a rural doc. What would you wear for that? I was planning on black dress pants, professional looking black shoes and a nice short sleeve top. Does that sound too casual for an interview? I am just thinking about the rural clinics I have been to and they are generally fairly casual, so I don't think a suit would be appropriate. Any ideas?

ppl with only one interview so far.. holla.

should i be freaking out yet? processed 6/30

Sorry, but I don't completely understand. Is this a medical school interview, or just an interview to get the "job" shadowing the doctor? I'll assume the latter:

If you already have a suit, I would probably just wear it to be safe. If not, nice non-suit business attire would probably be OK.

Med school interview for TCOM's rural track... they require that you spend a day shadowing one of the rural faculty members as part of your interview.

So you have the normal TCOM inteview/tour/lunch one day and the next you drive out to another town to shadow a doc which counts as one of your "interviews". Does that make sense? I know its strange, it came as a surprise to me too.... hence, why I am asking about what to wear. A suit seems like overkill, but maybe I'll just call the rural med office and ask.

Hey, at least you have an interview. Still none for me. I was processed 7/5, LORs in to TMDSAS 7/17, and still waiting. Bleh.

oh hell yes the interview i got was a miracle (numbers aren't as fantastic as majority ppl on this board)

but hang in there. right now the schools are going for the high roller applicants (big numbers) .. especially with rolling admissions, they all want the "best" ppl first..

Welcome!

I just had the interview today, and I'll put the full details on the interview feedback page (I don't know the link off-hand). Overall, though, it was not bad. One interviewer only asked me "so, tell me all about Baghdad..." type of questions, although she made some efforts to connect them to a sheet she had in front of her, which I didn't see but probably contained character attributes and experiences they wanted to see demonstrated.

The other, the student actually, asked more difficult questions of the sort "tell me about a time in your life when you..." Good questions actually, I don't know how I could possibly have come up with good answers for them all without some years of postgraduate experience to draw from. He stumped me with one about the direction of medicine, never did quite get what he was aiming at, but at least I didn't get any "discuss the merits of the HMO system" types of questions. Overall, everybody was very friendly, met lots of students, listened to an MS1 lecture, got a real warm fuzzy for the place.

I was impressed by how friendly the students were at San Antonio. Anyone @ TX A&M next week? I still don't know where I'm staying.

omg, windsen, i know you - this is little laura from baker. i have been frequenting this site this summer as i freak out about interviews. UT-SA has not yet asked me for an interview (and perhaps never will), but the other three UT schools have, go figure 🙂 good luck with everything!!

I really liked San Antonio.

The end.

PS: I didn't meet any SDN'ers... I guess its not as easy as I thought to pick you out from the crowd.

Anyone going to Galveston this Friday or UTSW this Saturday? I'll be @ both.
