I didn't like UT-H. I think that their school is discriminatory, especially with regards to asians. With all these "rumors" being discussed inappropriately on this board, I'll add what I've heard about this school. One of the administrators of the school directly asked a south indian student, "do you know how many dr. patels I know?" Plus there is that inferiority complex given their superior neighbor, Baylor. also traffic, weather... But whatever - there's good and bad at all the schools. I think you should go to the best school you can get into. It'll help you in the long run. Yeah sure you can probably get into whatever residency going to whatever school (if you work hard) but it is going to be at least that tiny bit harder for you.

You know, I never got the feeling that they were discriminatory against minorities, but I suppose that one thing medical schools do have to do is limit the number of seats for minorities. And that's something I'm not going to get into, as it would cause a spin-off debate on the rights/wrongs of AA, something I think we can all do without.

I got an email yesterday for an Interview at A&M! I didn't know we had to provide our own transportation to Temple. Hmm. How far is it from College Station?

It takes an hour and a half to get to temple from C.S. At the interview they give you a map and detailed directions or the option of following the assistant dean. The drive is fine, just sucks because it causes a very long interview day.

Good luck on your interview. Scott & White is a great teaching hospital.

I'll be trekkin to College Station tomorrow evening. Who's going?

potato - you made it to the free lunch on interview day!!! I missed it - went shopping for that formal dinner on Sunday. Anyway...

Hi pre-meds.. (I still can't get over the fact that I'm now a MSI) 😀

So here's my take on UTSW based on my almost 1 1/2 week as an MS I. So far I've met about 1/2 the class and am trying to remember names and faces. Everyone I've met are interesting in their own way. Most people I see appear to be physically active (some actually look like surfer dudes). I have not met a competitive person, but have heard a rumor about 1 person wanting to be the number one in our class. I thought that was kind of funny. (I'm sure you'll find at least 1 person like this in every med school.) People do work hard and have very good study habits, which I think is essential considering the amount of material we have to get through in such a short period of time. Some people just study hard because they love science. Then there're people like me who have not started reading anything at all, which means that I should probably be studying rather than posting on SDN. 😛

I'd say our class is very diverse. The youngest people in class are 20 yo's, oldest 40 yo. We're people from different races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and countries. We have a professional football player in our class, several pilots, musicians, and whatever else I don't remember. One person actually put 'dating' as one of his/her EC activities. Anyway.. I digress.

There're also people who go to happy hour every week, throwing parties on weekends, etc.

Anyway - I'm kind of scattered brain and that's all I can think of right now. Oh... we had our first Anatomy lab yesterday. Surprisingly, I did not faint - Anatomy totally rocks!!!

Good luck everyone!

I'm heading up there this afternoon. Hopfully I can get out of work early enough to get there for dinner - Blue Baker here I come! I also have to bring back some Joy Luck for my wife. We really miss College Station food.

I'll be the middle aged (26) guy in the pin stripes.

If 26 is middle aged, than I should probably commit suicide at 40.

Ha! I'm sneaking up on 27 here in a few weeks and my wife, 3 years younger, has been giving me a rought time, as well as all of my little brothers.

That is awesome to go for it at 40. I have been listening to my dad bi**h about "I should have been a lawyer" for 20 years. He should have sucked it up then and just done it.

I will be headed to College Station this afternoon as well... missing my first day of classes. Hopefully its worth it 🙂

San Antonio on September 10th (or 11th, my dad wasn't sure...) baby!!!!

Yes, my dad just read the letter to me and it's September 11th (funny, huh?...huh? :scared: ).....I'm so excited to have an interview!!

Also, if anyone from BAYLOR UNIVERSITY is interviewing at UTHSCSA that same day and is driving there, please PM me if you are willing to take along a poor student who does not own a car...plane fares are expensive for my budget (I already looked it up, and greyhounds are CREEPY). I will reimburse you nicely for it. 🙂

😍 😍

let me just say......SCHWWEEEETTTT, i've been processed by TMDSAS. come on interviews. this is our third dance, let's make it one to remember (which means i get some love and get in, not the bad sort of remember) hahahaha.

Christexasam & lilTXcatMD, we'll see you there. My wife & I ate at wings & more. I wanted to go eat at the dining hall on the north side (sabisa - sp?) but we got in too late.

Its going to be a long day tomorrow so rest up ya'all!

It's sbisa, but it doesn't really matter.

I am an OOS student, and to my surprise, I just got an interview invite (for 9/16) from UTSW a few days back without any LORs.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you could give me a recommendation on a hotel. UTSW provides a long list, but I was hoping one of you could cut out all the work of trying to find out which one was closest to campus and all. I'll be driving down, so the availability of a shuttle is not a factor.

Thanks!

I stayed at a Super 8 Motel. it's $55 if you book on hotels.com. It's on John Carpenter Freeway near Regal Row. It's not the best place in the world, but if you're looking for a close place that is cheap, this is the best I could find. You can get to UTSW in about 5-10 minutes.

Mid-twenties isn't middle aged.

Who else is doing UT Houston tomorrow? And I have UTSW the day after...should be an interesting weekend.

You were going to go to Sbisa when you had other perfectly good options. :barf: Sorry I ate there for 4 years and I have no desire to eat there again.

Vin Dissel?? You have to have better taste than that.

Congratulations on those who got invited to the interviews!

I am having trouble coming up something nice for UTSW secondary application. But I just found that some people said that there is no secondaries for UTSW, how come? Any trick for that?

Can anybody give me some hints about the assay (setting of medical career)? thanks a lot!

Anyone in Galveston tomorrow? I have yet to meet an SDNer.

I'll be there. I was in Hou. 8-16, and SA 8-21 I should be easy to pick out, I'll probably be the oldest person there.

I won't be there but dropping my name to the dean could gain you favor there. Something to the effect of: "WestTexasRambler, man he's an extraordinarily compassionate and all around good guy".....that oughtta do just fine.

Thanks, :meanie:

In all seriousness, G'luck!

How soon after y'all were processed did u get your first interview invite? I was just processed yesterday. Of course, I took the August MCAT, but I just want to get a feel timewise.

We ended up at Wings & More because my flight got delayed and Sbisa closes @ 8pm. It's been 10 years since I ate there and I miss it 😍

TMDSAS processed on 7/19, my first interview invite was mailed out on 8/4. It seemed a lot of people on here were hearing from schools on average of 2 weeks post processing. I haven't heard from any other schools so far and while it is making me nervous, I'm just trying to stay patient. It seems that there is some randomness in this whole process =p. My HP Committee Letters Packet was recently submitted so maybe that'll help out some in the next few weeks. We'll see.

I stayed at the Embassy Suites. It is probably a little more expensive than the hotels recommended by TTU (I think I paid $110 per night) but it was a really nice hotel, and a complementary happy hour and breakfast buffet is included in the price of the room. You can't go wrong with Embassy Suites. It is about 10 - 15 minutes away (easy drive) from the TTUHSC on the loop (and Slide Rd.)

Embassy Suites... Fancy Shmancy!!! 😎

I stayed at the Supah 8. $55 / night. Wasn't the greatest, but I wasn't there for enjoyment and it got the job done while being pretty close (5 minutes).

Ditto. I just wish they would have invited me a week and a half earlier so I wouldn't have to fly down for the interview. (I'm going back up to school in a few days.) I even asked them--and very politely, I might add--to do that. 😎

What the...? I just got a Southwestern interview. They work on Saturdays!?!? Kudos to the work ethic at the admissions office!

Congrats!! Do you think they're just starting to look beyond their auto-invites?

Did anyone get an invitation to a reception by Texas Tech Medical School Alumni? It's held in Houston on September 12th, 2006. What does this mean? Does it mean that I have an interview invite there and just don't know about it? I mean, why would they invite me to this reception if they weren't planning on interviewing me, right?
