quick TMDSAS question --- a class I had said I was going to take next Spring semester will not be offered (not any sort of prereq, just an elective in my major). I am taking another one in its place, but how do I remove that old class?

I have already interviewed, will it matter to anyone that I'm changing one measly class?

I am pretty sure only TMDSAS can add/remove those classes now. At least that's what they told me. Just send the transcripts in when you have them. Shouldn't be any issue whatsoever, unless you get a D or F.

I just got en e-mail asking me to be in Galveston on 11-17.

I'm out of money now (meaning I have to charge the credit card....even more 🙁 ), and I already had 4 interviews. Acceptances go out on the 15th, so I don't know what to do.

I know it would be foolish to turn down an interview with no acceptances yet in hand. Worst of all, acceptances will come by SNAIL MAIL. I'm thinking I'll buy everything refundable and call the schools on the 15th to see if I got lucky, then I can always cancel with Galveston....

What do you guys think??:scared:

You're in Waco right? Can't you drive then stay with a student? Shouldn't cost too much. I don't think it's a good idea to turn it down w/o an acceptance first.

So I am a TX out of state applicant, and I was accepted to my 1st and second choice schools, which are both TX schools. My 2nd choice school notified me about 2 weeks before my first choice school did. I immediately sent back the signed acceptance of their offer that they require (has to be back within 2 weeks to them).

So a few days after sending it, an acceptance offer arrives in the mail from my FIRST choice school in TX. I of course signed that acceptance letter of their (first choice school) offer and sent it ASAP as well.

Now I've checked and both my acceptance letters have made it back to their respective schools. I still have one prereq to go, but otherwise everything is totally in order in my paperwork, it appears. Still the paranoid inner-child in me says to not let the second choice school know quite yet that I am now going to decline their offer. Is this really tacky, or is it still early enough in the game that it doesn't really matter that much? I don't want to be taking a slot that someone else could be getting, so I should go ahead and let them know probably this week. Still, I don't know if there's some timeline for OOS that I am still way ahead of the curve on, and can wait a little more before telling them.

I know that TMDSAS now does this whole "match" thing, presumably to avoid the very situation that I am in, but none of that applies to OOS, probably because we OOSers probably make up such a minute part of the overall incoming student body, it doesn't really matter too badly what we do.

Is there an observed etiquette on this kind of thing? Am I being a selfish ass by holding onto #2 (ok, that sounds kind of perverse if you like puns)? Is there a TMDSAS god that will strike me down and tell me I no longer am allowed into any TX school because I played "hold onto your cards" for a while?

I did the "refundable" thing too, as I was sort of in the same situation. I'd probably recommend it. My highest choice schools hadn't yet come through so I was still accepting interviews right and left. I had to cancel two flights that I paid extra for to make them refundable, so it's all good.

Yeah, I'm in Waco. I don't have a car, though, and it's a thursday, I don't know how many people are going home for the weekend (I'll try to get a ride though).

I don't think I will turn them down (as a matter of fact I've already confirmed the interview), but my bank account is in agony already. I'm definetely going to stay with a student, though, or at least I hope I can get one.

Yes. I don't mean that harshly, but is there really a point to holding on to #2? Heh I got a pun in there too.

i'm an OOS and i'm holding on to 2 acceptances too. i have a reason because my girlfriend who is an in-state applicant is applying and i'm trying to go to the same school as her. i dont view that as selfish

For you out of stater's that got acceptances, do you mind if I ask which schools they were? And all sent via snail mail right?

Does anybody know if the schools will send out acceptances to in-staters via email or snail mail?

Same with me. Had to turn down an interview (without holding an acceptance) cuz it would have taken 3 days off from work and alot of driving and alot of money.

I hope that's not selfish; assuming I ever get any acceptances, I'll be holding onto them for as long as it takes to understand my husband's employment prospects in the various cities to which we might move.

So what Pemb is saying is that she'll be holding on to one spot at every Texas med school until the match.

Just kidding! 😍

No idea, but I would imagine it would be the same as for OOS. That's snail mail for several of them.

For those of us August MCATers comparing notes, TCOM's website says I've been selected for interview, though they haven't called to set up a time yet.

They'll probably call you today. I got the call at 7 or 8 at night. I can't believe I find out in less than a week if I got in! Have u gotten any other invites?

I'll be at Southwestern this Sat, and UTMB next Fri. I've met several TCOM students at the clinic I volunteer at. They seem really nice, so you'll be in good company if you get in. Good luck!!!

Not selfish. Practical.

For those of you that have been to Galveston....how far away is the nearest airport from there??

According to the tickets I have on hold, I have to go to Houston (I guess there's no airport IN Galveston, since I tried that and it gave no results, only nearby airports).

So, how far away is the HOU airport from there?

45 minutes to an hour, depending on how fast you drive and traffic.

There's not much of anything in Galveston besides the Medical School, lots of [old] houses, a port, and miles of nasty beaches. Oh yeah, last year they got a Chili's. Woohoo.

I really liked the Med. School, however.

Good to know, thank you. 🙂

I wonder how much that taxi is going to cost....:scared:

And I also just figured out that all the return flights have an overnight connection. This is just GREAT.

Important note though. It's 45 minutes from Hobby airport (HOU). It's over one hour from Bush Intercontinental (IAH). Keep that in mind when you book as some airlines don't service both airports.

qucik question: I hve come down with horrible ear infection where my face is swollen and I am on some hardcore painkillers. I am supposed to go interview at tech tomorrow and I don't think i am allowed to fly there because of the severity of my infection. What a re the chances that t ehy'll let me reschedule? And should I just call them about it?

If your 21 a 2 day car rental with enterprise will be cheaper than a taxi.

Just call them. Of course they'll let you reschedule. You probably don't want to be interviewing with a swollen face anyway. 🙂 Although I interviewed at my top choice school with a partially black eye, lol. I do a lot of mixed-martial arts workouts with other guys, and just explained it. I got in... but I was a little self-conscious about the whole thing and it probably distracted me (and them), nonetheless.

I'm going to take a stab here and guess that UTMB isn't your top choice?

Hmmmm......I liked Galveston.........I've been thinking seriously about going there (if I have a choice, of course) buying a beach house, riding a bike back and forth to school, temperate climate, and short days so you have afternoons to study. I live in Dallas, so the beach in Galveston is a lot better that the one here in Dallas.

Galveston Limo. 60 bux to anywhere in Galveston round trip. There's a little booth for it in the baggage claim area in Hobby. Car rentals when I went would have been upwards of around 80 bux.

Thank you, I'll definitely use that if I fly. By the way, does anyone know if they also have a booth at the Bush Int'l airport, or just at Hobby?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone here driving there on for the 17th interview driving through 1-35 (passing through or near Waco, TX), that is willing to let me ride with them?? I will share any associated gas costs.

I'm desperate here, planes are in the range of ~400-500 dollars, with very awful schedules.

They have pickups from both airports.

Look at schedules. They have specific leaving times from airports (usually from a specific place/booth/driveway). They also have general times leaving Galveston (although they will pick u up from anywhere in galveston).

Why don't you just rent a car for 2 days and drive down there (or get a friend to drive down with you)? It's only a 4 hour drive from Waco to Galveston. It would probably take you longer than that to deal with airports.

Besides, it would cost a WHOLE lot less than $400, even if you have to stay an extra night!

I'm ashamed to reveal that I haven't gotten my driver's license yet (no, I didn't fail the test, I just have not taken it).

Therefore, that's not an option.

O well.

ONLY 5 DAYS LEFT!

I want to hereby start an initiative to call all the TMDSAS schools on Nov 15th. This way, we'll know which schools are willing to tell us about our acceptance or god forbid, rejection/waitlist. If we each call a school, it would cut down on the work. If you want in, please sign your name under this post and write down the place you're willing to call.

First off I'm oos. When I called UT-H, they seemed to hesitant to give any information over the phone, but they said they will be using snail mail and POSSIBLY email. Good luck to everyone (and me 2 🙂 ) :luck:

My friend interviewed at UTSW a couple of weeks ago. Last weekend I was talking to him about his experiences and he told me that the interviewer quizzed him on anatomy. Has anyone ever come across this before? I mean... if your application demonstrates that you are an anatomy buff and they ask you those questions, I can understand... but those kind of questions out of the blue?
Should I study some anatomy before the 2007 application cycle (assuming I get lucky enough for an interview from UTSW... which isn't likely at all)?

how far is the airport from texas tech medical school in lubbock?

chill, there aren't any questions that turn up like this unprovoked. at most, they want you to have an understanding of healthcare, not anatomy. if you do get asked this, there's nothing wrong with saying "i don't know at this moment but i can get back to you"

You take anatomy during your MS1. How could they reasonably expect you to know it beforehand? No, either the interviewer was doing a stress question, which usually is not testing your knowledge, but your reaction, OR your bud has something in his app that elicited the question (i.e. working in an anatomy research lab).

My interviewer at Tech had his PhD in Microbiology and he quizzed me on black mold. It was unprovoked as I know absolutely nothing of black mold.

I agree with E-rage. I think questions like this are used to gauge your reactions, not necessarily your intelligence.

I'm just wondering. Soon people will start getting acceptances. Are you guys going to post in here when you do, or only in the official acceptances thread? I ask because I almost never check the official acceptances thread. The only SDN'ers I really know are the Texas people. I just want to say that I won't be offended if you post your acceptance in this thread.

I agree. Either post here, or we could do a Texas Acceptances Thread......

Here, I don't want to have to look at two. Too lazy.
