hmmm my LMFU changed to 11/15....man no email from UTSW I was really hoping for one...I am still hanging on to hope...did all UTSWers hear at the same time of day?

Congrats to you FrodDoc07 (and everyone else that got UTSW). Glad to hear about your LMFU though! Mine is still at 9/18/06 and I'm still hoping to pick up an acceptance from TAMU. I interviewed on 8/31 there. All this talk of 100406 and 110606 and 111506 or whatever started making me nervous and thinking no more accepts were coming my way (not that TCOM is bad by any means). Oh well, glad to hear some LMFU's haven't been changing.

Yes, one of my top 3. I haven't replied to Pkboi's thread, because I still don't know how to rank my top 3, I just know what my top 3 are. Oh, hell, now that I have an acceptance, I'll just come right out and say it: My top 3 are UTSW, Baylor, and UTSA, again, not in any particular order.

Also, thanks for all the congrats from everyone, and congrats to FrogDoc, baylormed, and everybody else that has since posted UTSW acceptances.

I'm confused about how we have to handle multiple prematch offers. The emails said (or at least the UTH one did) that we have to respond by Dec 1. But the TMDSAS site says we can hold multiple offers until Dec 31. Does that mean we can "accept" more than one offer now (to meet the Dec 1 deadline) and later give up one of those offers (to meet the Dec 31 deadline)? Or do we need to decline all but one offer before Dec 1?

UTSW had their scores in the folder they gave out, and UTMB had some powerpoint slides about it. If I recall correctly, UTMB's average was either 226 or 228. At UTH I asked, they dodged, and eventually said it was about average (I think that's 217). (Lots of places say this though, and someone has to be below average, so I take such statements with a grain of salt.)

Some people will tell you that these averages are meaningless because they have far more to do with the individual than the school. But I think they're a good measure of the curriculum as well, especially if you look at the average step 1 score along with the average matriculant MCATs and GPAs. For example, if I remember correctly, UTMB and UTSW have similar averages. Because UTSW has a much higher average matriculant GPA and MCAT, I conclude that UTMB has a strong, effective curriculum (and perhaps that UTSW's curriculum is at least somewhat weak).

Or, if you've already been accepted somewhere, there's no harm in just asking them! (Data about TRENDS in scores are also very useful, I think, especially if the has been curricular reform or if reform is ongoing.)

Some of them post them on their web page. Some said them at interviews. Some were nebulous. Here is my recollection:

Baylor: 236
UTMB: 226 (Just Double-Checked this on their web page)
UTSW: 224 (Yes, trivially lower than UTMB)
A&M: "About Average" (Average is 215ish, IIRC)
Tech: "Slightly Below Average"
UTSA: Didn't Say
UT-H: Didn't Interview There (Please Edit/Fill In If you Know)
TCOM: Didn't Apply There

I had the same thought about UTSW vs UTMB. There is a noticable disparity between their average students MCAT and GPA, and yet UTMB stays in the mix. I also think that it is likely due to cirriculum.

Those are mine, as well. Very different things I like about each. I would also give serious consideration to Duke or Emory, depending on what my husband's career prospects do the financial differences, but to debate that now would be counting the great-grandchildren of the currently unhatched chickens.

I have minor issues with the teaching at UTSW, but I disagree that our curriculum is weak. Some schools (I'm not saying UTMB) are known to teach almost exclusively to the boards, which sacrifices other aspects of medical education, so I don't think the average on a standardized exam exactly measures the strength of a curriculum.

It is notable, though, that UTMB has pulled up its scores in recent years.

You're right, I guess it's just too easy to be discontent. I'm going to be a doctor (barring any unforeseen circumstances) WOOHOO! Congratulations to all!

I have minor issues with the teaching at UTSW, but I disagree that our curriculum is weak. Some schools (I'm not saying UTMB) are known to teach almost exclusively to the boards, which sacrifices other aspects of medical education, so I don't think the average on a standardized exam exactly measures the strength of a curriculum.

It is notable, though, that UTMB has pulled up its scores in recent years.

I agree that's it's hard to separate the strength of a curriculum from "teaching to the test" based on step 1 scores, but we're forced to give such comparisons at least some credence because there is no other quantitative measure.

Interestingly, some faculty I've spoken to have said the boards have gotten pretty good in past years, and that teaching to the test is much less of a pedagogical no-no as a result.

BTW, I'm very interested in your opinions about the UTSW curriculum (strengths/weaknesses, etc), if you'd be willing to share here or via PM.
