Texas Interviews 2008: Part 2

Well, I called UTMB and started the conversation by asking about whether I should send updated transcripts to TMDSAS or directly to them. The lady seemed so irritated that I decided against demanding an interview. I have to start off with a joke or something to get them in a good mood. I'll try everyday until some one picks up the phone and sounds happy.

btw- updated transcripts really have no bearing on your interviews

Do you recall what the lady's name was?
 
Oh...wanted to give a heads up to the Super 8 on Texas Ave. in College Station. Very easy on the pocketbook at $60 per night, but you will get what you pay for. Rooms were 4+ stinky and walls are paper thin.

I was a little concerned they might have an hourly rate...

I'm trying to make my decision and I need to know what sort of scale this "4+ stinky" is on?

If you dont book a motel and walk into the super 8 the night before your interview it is only $40 for the night... but that approach might stress some out. I thought it was fine, but im not hard to please and ive stayed at much worse.

I almost went a step up and stayed in the car...truly it isn't that bad. Just don't count on luxurious amenities. You also might want to know where you are going before you leave in the morning. The front desk "attendant" was just a few action potentials from having her organs harvested.

At that much per night I never would have complained. 👍

No kidding. I didn't think the hotel was bad but she did give my room away to some one else. Luckily they still had one open when I got there.

Hey, does anyone have a TMDSAS validation date yet? I don't and was wondering if it's possible.

TCOM interview today. Went very well - much impressed with facilities and especially friendliness of students/staff.

During the orientation, the presenter mentioned that TCOM was looking to fill half its class with the pre-match offers and half through the match.

I did. It's the cheapest of the hotels and the closest. It's 100 meters from the UTHSCSA parking lot (if not for a hill, I think you could see it from the hotel). That's your best choice without a doubt.

i was just posting cuz i havent heard from any texas schools for interviews (minus UTMB). i have a 3.7/40 and not gonna lie, im starting to get a little worried. do any of you know possible reasons/explanations for this?

i checked my TMDSAS and it says that i have everything in. also, I turned in my UTSW secondary near the end of july.

Give it time? Most of the schools have only given out interviews through September so there are still plenty of months left in the interview cycle.

At least you got UTMB...some of us are still wondering why they overlooked us. 🙁

A word of advice: I had sent in all my secondaries and stuff to Tech about 2 months ago (I submitted my TMDSAS at the end of June), but I checked the status page for the first time yesterday and it said my app was incomplete b/c I hadn't paid the secondary fee. Now, my check to Tech had cleared about a month and a half ago, so I knew something was fishy. I called the Tech admissions office yesterday and asked them about it, and the nice lady found my check and stuff, and said that she would update my file and forward it to the director that day. Today, I promptly received my interview invite. So...if you're waiting to hear from Tech and you submitted a long time ago...call.

I got two interviews today. Do you guys think I should be expecting more? 3.77 and 29R MCAT. Not exceptional, but I thought good enough to get some interviews. What you guys think?

Do you guys feel that there is a magic number of interviews that would make you feel fairly confident you were getting in somewhere? Especially in Texas? About 1200 total get into Texas Medical schools not including Baylor. It seems to me that each school interviews about 1000 or so students, therefore, they are probably interviewing the same 1000 pretty much everywhere in Texas. Assuming that 200 of the 1200 fill up the DO school, then shouldn't the 1000 getting interviews fill out the rest of the class (200 SA, 200 H-town, 200 Galveston, 130 Tech, 80 A&M, 200 SW )? Thats not even including those of the 1000 that will leave the Lone Star State for the likes of Columbia and Hopkins. So it would seem to me that if you had say 3-4 interviews especially early on then you would probably be getting in at least somewhere? I am just trying to find some peace of mind in these restless days.
 
I'll have my 4th interview on Friday, but I don't feel anything is automatic. Several on here have had a bunch of interviews with no acceptance. I don't think you can assume the schools are interviewing the same people.
 
I think you're in good shape statistically, but who knows these days. Compared to others, Texas schools seem to give you a very good chance of an acceptance after an interview. As long as you performed reasonably well on your interviews, you've got good odds. I think it's good policy to treat every interview as the only one you have, though.

I don't know about all the schools interviewing the same 1000.

Sorry. I don't mean to scare anyone...I'm just telling it like it is. You can't take anything for granted. I'd give anything to be sitting in a med school lecture hall right now, but alas I'm still here.

Nope, no clue. Talked to all my interviewers + asst deans of adcoms and came up with basically nothing. And I consider myself a pretty likeable person...so who knows really. Guess thats what makes this year even more frustrating: not knowing exactly what I need to do differently. 😕 I just try to sell all my interviews even more than last year if I can..
 
I would like to think that with 4 interviews (2 in state, 2 out of state) I'm going to get in somewhere. Hell, this is 4 times as many interviews as I had the first time I applied, and I got waitlisted that time.

Of course that's all just hope.. I could get flat out rejected by all of them for all I know.

We represent a small percentage of the tx population at this point. I think some schools started app. reviews a bit later. Hold on tight. More to come 🙂:luck:

I think I would be frustrated too if I were in your shoes. Well, no need to be depressed just yet. At least you have interviews this year, so I think you still have a very good chance 👍

Later, but not terribly late. All of my interviews were finished around a month or more before Nov 15th (when the first acceptances went out) so theoretically I should have been ok...

And thanks juicymonster! I'm trying to be as positive as possible...a couple more interviews would make me feel much better though.
 
it is getting very hard for me to stay positive now days. its about to be yet another week with no invite. 👎
do any of yall think i will get any interviews at all?
