I think you meant to post on this thread:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85087&perpage=25&pagenumber=1

First off, to quote my other post, I dont think I said anything off base or insulting. At least I did not accuse her of lacking intelligence, like she did the SDN community, I simply do not believe her story. If her story is true, then I stand corrected, but I doubt it. Secondly, I didnt even realize she was female until you mentioned it just now. That said, I should have been more chivalrous in retrospect, but I did not realize she was female. My apologies to crazee8 if all this is somehow true. But even then, she need not have such an arrogant and confrontational attitude towards the community, and it was to this attitude that I reacted perhaps a bit too harshly. Once again, if this is true, I apologize to crazee8-- I, like spumoni, should have been more diplomatic but your arrogant tone struck a nerve in me.

And please dont insult my heritage. I will defend SDNers from arrogant trolls. It has nothing to do with my race or creed. And threats from the likes of you do not scare me in the least. Though, I hope you, like crazee8, find what you are looking for in life, whatever that may be.

Gleevec,

If you were only as smart as crazee8, I would tip my hat off to you. Consider, if you will, for moment that crazee8 is who she says she is... then would it be justified for you to talk to her in that way??? she is a young girl? watch the language?jewfish prick.

Another thing, I saw you at the Baylor interview. I figured it out b/c you were the only one there that goes to college in NC and claim Texas residency. It would be a sham if the admission?s committee at Baylor or TMDSAS gets word that some 21 yr-old kid with the USERNAME: GLEEVEC on their secondary application and [who interviewed at there school on a certain day in September with a certain (IP address)] is posting s**t like this on SDN. Be careful to cover all of your tracks. You never know who is on this forum. Dean Jones might not call on Oct. 15. A TMDSAS state residency questionnaire may just well be in-line... Good Day Mr. Cansur Asskissing!

Crazeee8,

I commend you on your academic achievements. Keep up the excellent work and PM me when you are ready to apply to medical school.

Take care,
swankydude 😉

After reading a few posts from periodic and some others, I realize I might have been out of line in the other thread. I apologize to anyone I have offended and promise not to get involved in such quarrels in the future. I had a pretty bad day and was struck poorly by the tone take by some posters. It will not happen again, my apologies. Thank you for helping me realize this periodic et al.

Sincerely,
Gleevec

Anyway, sorry for the sidetrack, how is everyone doing for Texas interviews. Keep em coming yall!

swankydude -- "jewfish prick"????? You have got to be kidding me. Whatever you may think about Gleevec, racial epithets are absolutely inexcusable. Before you go making threats like the one in your post, I would consider how medical schools would view offhand antisemetism. You owe Gleevec and the board an apology.

😍 can we have our friendly thread back? Please???

Others may be jealous/trollish, but we don't have to respond to them. I know, I'm a mom and it's showing here! Truly though, I'm always happy when I see our thread pop up because I know there will be something worthwhile to read.

Wish I had something new to add. I think many of us are just waiting and waiting now.

Congrats to the new interview invites, HollyJ and I think there was another. 😉

Big game this weekend!:horns:

Good idea, Theresa, and thanks for the congrats!

Those of you who have already been to Baylor -- what did the breakdown of instate/out of state interviewees look like?

it seemed that the mix on my day was about 50-50. to my recollection, there were plenty from sugarland (a surrounding suburb of h-town) and houston, a couple who had gone to rice or baylor (in waco, not affiliated w/baylor med school) for undergrad, a ton of people (it seemed) from duke/ berkeley, two ppl from harvard/yale, some from georgia, washu, johns hopkins, and emory i think??? definitely a diverse mix. 50-50 guys and gals as well.

you'll have a wonderful day. i was so sold on baylor after i left--that hasn't happened anywhere else! good luck! 🙂

Hi HollyJ,
I have no evidence for this, but based on what I know about Baylor, it seems they interview a disproportionate number of out of staters early on in the process, and as the interview season continues, the %-age of in-staters increases. But I could be confusing in-staters who went out of stater for undergrad with pure out-of-staters, so take my idea with a large grain of salt. I think its about 60-40 in-state, out-of-state on average though, and on my day it was close to 50-50 as far as I can tell. Spumoni and I went on different days and got the same impression though, so it might be valid.

I say this because Baylor generally has 70% of its class as in-state, and that I think one of the ways they try to attract out-of-staters is with early notification and great tuition. Of course, the fact that the med center is beautiful, the curriculum is great, and the students and faculty are so nice also helps =).

I think you will really like Baylor. I might be biased, but a lot of out of staters Ive seen on the trail have been impressed with Baylor as well. Definitely stick around for Two Rows after, its fun and you get to meet the students.

Good luck to ya, yall do great =)

yeah, gleevec brings up a good point. they definitely accept a disproportionate number of tx residents, so it's possible that the ppl going to school out of state were from tx and the breakup might not have been 50-50. in fact, it's likely that it was 60-40 or even 70-30. i guess i spent a lot of time talking to ppl from out-of-state undergrads so my opinion was a little biased.

good luck!

But does Baylor know your state-of-residency before they invite you?

I'm pretty sure the early interviews are about 50-50 in/out-of-state. I recall someone from the school saying that.

It's a great interview day. Even the student presentation were funny. (instead of boring! 😉 ) Like Gleevec said, Two Rows was worth it. More students than interviewees on my day!

What else can I tell you? Interviews are centralized, so you don't have to hoof it all over the place. Be prepared to walk a lot on the tours, the hospitals are worth seeing! Go ahead and ask a question if you have a good one. The student panel remembers who asks questions! (I'm assuming that's not a bad thing!)

Yeah, it says on AMCAS. Also dont forget your residency questionaire the day of your interview.

Was anyone at Texas Tech this past week? I LOOVED IT... I thought it was a terrific school and really really liked the interviewers and other profs I met up with. I also really liked the students. Lubbock aint bad at all btw 😉

Still have to hear from Galveston, San Antonio and South Western.

best of luck everyone...

Just stay inside the city limits...... after that , it gets pretty boring unless you're going to NM. I like lubock too.

Yea! I got my Baylor interview invitation yesterday! It's for Nov. 21st.

What a relief, although, I've gotten this far before, so I'm cautiously optomistic.

Yea, Ms. a!!! You'll like Baylor. Great bunch of people.

Anyone else have news? Sparkles, you get that app in?? 😉

I've got UTSW next Friday. Anyone have any thoughts about interviewing there?

Theresa

hey theresa, good luck at utsw....not that you'll need it....post and let us know how it went! they finally straightened out the mess w/my secondary application, and i'm interviewing there late nov or early dec 🙁 and 🙂 kinda bummed about the late date, but better than never...

anyway, it's really nice weather in dallas right now--still walking around in sleeveless tops and shorts, but i hear this weekend one of those cold fronts is coming in so it might be chilly-pleasant by the time you get here...enjoy!

good luck!

I grew up in Dallas, actually! I'm glad the weather will be cooler. Walking tours in the heat in a suit just aren't any fun! 🙄

I can't help but think that a later interview might mean we'll be "fresh" in their memory when it comes time to rank us for the match. Of course, that would work to my disadvantage at all the schools I interviewed with in August... Waaay too much rationalization in this process!

Theresa

TheresaW, you'll love it. It has definitely been my best experience so far. Good luck -- I'm sure that they'll love you.

Time for my daily Baylor question -- has anybody had a student interviewer there?

i had a student interviewer at baylor. he was a 3rd year i think. he was really nice.

Do you remember his name? I'm terrified that I'm going to get someone I know. Even more terrified that I'll get someone I know who doesn't like me!

hollyj, i PMed you some information 🙂

I had one too. He an M.D./Ph.D student and very, very nice. All my student interviewers thus far have been truly laid back. The only thing: they can tell B.S. (especially for that question, "Why do you want to come here?" and also the "Do you have any questions") so no trying to pull fast ones (not that you would, but just throwing it out there). it's extra important to be sincere. it's also important to show the student that you'd be a good classmate--i.e. not uptight, compulsive, competitive, but friendly and intelligent and a good communicator.

not too hard, eh? 🙂

Thanks, y'all -- I think I'm worrying about this a little too much, no?

YES! I have my app in. For those of you who don't know- My MCAT is probably my weakest point. However, I am very optimistic! I "accidentally" glanced at my pre-med committee evaluation and it was very very good! I just hope I can get an interview. Good luck all, and I'll keep you posted!😉

Hi guys:

I received an invite to a Tx Tech Alumni dinner here in Houston. It says that applicants will have a chance to meet alumni and the current dean of the medical school.

Anyone else receive one? Ever been to one?

Thanks in advance.

I got the same one but for Dallas...I dunno if it's worth going??

HollyJ, I had a student interviewer at Baylor as well. She was very friendly, very professional. I was a bit nervous about being older than my interviewer but it wasn't a problem!😉

I'm finally looking forward to UTSW interview. I got the invite so long ago it's just not been at the front of my mind.

For those gettingthe Tech Alumni dinner invite, it couldn't hurt!!!

I would jump on the opportunity here in Dallas. Anything that might get me a leg up or more exposure!

No love through TMDSAS or AMCAS with Aug MCAT yet. A & M did send me email saying my last LOR is still missing. This prof is driving me nuts . . . super nice lady, but she lost my package of LOR info (which I overnighted two months ago), emailed all the stuff again two weeks ago in .pdf . . . . then today I get a email saying she can't open a .pdf 😕 😕 😕

I thought everyone new Acrobat .pdf format? So I sent her a link for the viewer. I hope she gets it out. This is the only good prof recommendation as a post bacc'er.

AAAARRRGGHH

Nov. 1 loooming. . . . at least my app is out there.

How did you guys get the TTech invite? By email or snail?

Those of you guys that got interviews to TAMU, did you recieve and email or snail mail? Did the email confirm a date or that you just were invited for an interview?

I got an e-mail invitation from A&M, with the 30th specified.

Stupid question- but how much does applying early matter? I'm a horrible procrastinator and I'm just now getting everything in (mostly because of my stupid committee letters grrrr)

btw- congrats to all w/ interviews!

Hi All,

I am curious. What is the ?general consensus? for the relative ranking of the medical schools in Texas?

Thanks.

This is what I think... with 90% Texas residents making up each class, it keeps from a selective few holding several acceptances in Texas until May. This keeps less movement, and thus it is easier for you the applicant concerning knowing where you are going to need to move to sooner, and better for the school also.

Are you asking about the match system or about how we all rank the schools by preference? If you're asking about preference, you won't find a consensus here!😉 Everyone has different standards for what makes a great school.

Strictly by reputation, I think you would get
#1 UTSW
#2 UTHouston
and then it breaks down!

Wow, I thought most would rank UTSW & Baylor as the top two. I would agree that the rest really depends on what you're looking for in a school.

There is at least one other thread on this topic so you might search.

Baylor isnt a part of TMDSAS anymore, so any 'rank' depends on whether people mean TMDSAS when they say Texas schools, or just schools located geographically in TX.

I think TheresaW meant, and correct me if I'm wrong, the order of the TMDSAS schools only.

I've been to all the TX schools and know graduates of all the TX schools and I will agree on UTSW, but placing UTH ahead of TAM, UTSA and TT is a bit interesting. Each had their strong points and depending on what you want, one may appear better than the other, but on just overall reputation, I think they are about the same (unless you actually believe US News rankings.....)

Well, at the point at which we are ranking schools, we are not looking at how good a school is for an individual but how well it is perceived overall. So naturally, US News comes into play (whether this is good or not, I dont know, but since we are ranking schools, at least US News has a methodology, whether we agree with it or not).

In any case, Ive heard Baylor, UTSW, UTH, UTSA, but that could just be due to the kinds of people I know. In any case, the difference in "rank" between most of the TX schools is irrelevant at a certain point and you should probably just visit around and see what school you like.

UTH and UTSA have the advantage of being in major cities (and the resources devoted to the medical centers due to being in 2 of the largest 15 or so cities in the US). while with TAMU and TT you get more rural experience (which is funded by the state). So depending on what type of medicine you want to practice and where you want to practice, that will probably factor in on how you rank the non-Baylor TX schools.
