TEXAS Med Schools Entering Class *2005* Applicant Thread part 01

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks everyone! I went to lunch (and more importantly, had some Halloween candy) and feel better.

I really appreciate everyone's support, and promise to cut back on the whiney posts! It really helps to hear from people like lane that interviewed later and still matched.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

What if you dont' like the other people who's last name starts with the same letter as yours? You don't get to pick your anatomy partners?

nope, you don't get to pick your anatomy partners. then again, how often do you get to pick your attendings or residents? 😳

Congrats! I got the November 5th invite today as well, I'm pretty excited. 👍 Right now, UTH is the school I would like to go to most.

On another note, is UTH the only Texas school with a joint MD/MPH program? I looked at the various Texas schools' websites. I found that TAMU has a rural MPH program, but it doesn't appear to offer a joint degree program with the medical school. The others don't seem to have anything either, with the exception of UTH. Anyone know of any programs that I might have overlooked?

So at what point can we give up hope at even getting an interview? I know everyone will say it's only October, but someone (LetMeIn ?) posted that they had gotten a 12/01 interview with UTMB so obviously the schools are getting to the end of the interview season. Its just pretty discouraging to get home from work, go out to the mailbox and nothing. Then go in and check my email and, again, nothing. I have a business trip to Austin next week, so I guess after I get back and finish my month-end close at work, I'll get my books out and start studying again.

I really am happy for all folks that have gotten interviews so far, I just want to be happy for me too!!

Aidan, keep your chin up. UTH is only now filling 11/5 spots, so there are quite a few spots still open there. If there's one school that you're really in to, maybe send them a letter stating your strong passion for that school, the reasons behind it, and why you think that you would be a good fit that would enhance the student body makeup there. If you want it bad enough, it will happen. Good luck my friend

hey, whose gonna be in lubbock on 10/29. and anyone heard anything about tech in terms of their curriculum and med school.

tech has a traditional curriculum although they are moving towards a more organ based approach.

the med school has awesome facilities but the only drawbacks are that you wiill have to move after your 2nd year to elpaso or amarillo, although both these places offer excellent hands on training. And ofcourse, the medschool is in Lubbock....not a big problem for me since i grew up in a small town in LA...but could be a problem if are more accustomed to the city life.

on a side note...hows that gf of yours in college station?

I know that Southwestern and San Antonio offer this as an option as they are regional campuses of the SPH program in Houston. The selection of classes isn't as strong as the Houston campus though. I think that you could do this at Galveston as well, since it is part of the UT system. However, you'd most likely have to come to Houston for classes. I'm not sure about Tech, since its a different system.
I have a lot of reservations about completing an MPH while in med school. PM me if you have any questions.

On another note, I think we can make it official that this thread is THE best thread on SDN. What can I say, it just is. The others just don't seem to hold a candle to this one, I'm afraid. Oh well, someone's gotta be king, why not this thread? Good luck with secondaries/interviews everyone

Haha, this thread has become my home. First thing I do when I get online is check my mail, then check the SDN Texas thread

Hey me too! Seriously, until I met you guys, I thought that I was the ONLY ONE who was THIS obsessed about applying to medical school! I feel much better now, even though my friends and boyfriend still think I'm crazy! :meanie:

Hi guys! Quick post-interview moment I wanted to share with y'all:

A group of us were waiting to go on up for our interviews this afternoon. Literally like minutes before. One of the guys gets a call on his cell.....it was SLU and he found out right there that he'd been accepted.

Cool, eh?

Oh, and my interview went veddy well. 👍 It's off to DC to party! Woo!!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Hey guys. I know UT schools heavily favor Texas residents, but do you guys know whether or not they make a priority to look at the residents' applications first before they go on to look at out-of-staters' apps? I have been complete at Houston since the end of September and I am still waiting for a response. Maybe I'm being too impatient. Thanks for any input.

I have not posted my stats, b/c they are a lot lower than most of you on this thread. My GPA is 3.3, and my MCAT was 26O (10VR, 8 PS, 8BS). I really thought that I had a shot to at least interview with those numbers just by looking at the stats on the TMDSAS website.

You know, I realize I've been pretty needy with most of my posts here and I really hate that, I'm not generally like that. Why is it that this process makes some of us turn into people that we really don't like?

I really am happy for all folks that have gotten interviews so far, I just want to be happy for me too!!
I've been staying away from this thread, because I'm in the same boat you are (3.05 GPA--by TMDSAS standards, 29o 10VR, 9 PS, 10BS, and still no invites) 🙁 but I'm glad you posted this. Not that I'm glad you're miserable (like me), but it does get harder and harder to post "Congrats on your interview" when I have nothing new to report, and it's nice to know there's someone feeling my pain. I'm still holding onto hope, although I have settled on an alternate plan for Fall 2005, if need be. 😳

Good luck :luck:

Congrats MadameLULU!

Evo, hon, come sit next to dr.roja... 😀

should i be crying yet?
i haven't gotten a single interview yet. i did poorly on the april mcat and re-took it in august. i didn't expect any interviews based on my first score, but i got a 33 on the aug. test. i have a 3.84 as well. i'm just scared because i haven't even heard anything from houston, who's famous for their crazy-fast turnaround.
AHHHH. sorry. i just needed to vent.

Hey Lilly, come on in and join the club! Several us are in the same boat, but you have crazy high stats compared to me, so it may just be that they haven't gotten around to reviewing your file with the new scores yet.

UNTlabrat, we can be miserable together! I saw ajnak182 posted that she/he got a 11/05 interview at UT-Houston, so there may be hope for some of us yet.

I managed to not think about medical school or applications at all for a while this afternoon. Funny, considering I was at a dr.'s office. I had to take my baby girl for a followup for an ear infection. It's amazing how quickly everything flies from your mind when your baby is crying 🙁 . The pediatrician had to clean the wax from her ears to look at the ear drum, and she was absolutely wailing. She was ok once I picked her up, but I hated the doc and myself for having to hold her down while it was going on. She's sleeping right now, otherwise, there would not be any computer time for me!

Hey you're playing my song. I am waiting for news from the home front here in Tejas, finally got a TCOM interview this week after being "complete" for 1 day. That TMDSAS can really be slow. Like many organizations that have a monopoly, they seem to forget the "service" part of the name.

Good luck to all.

Signed,

Waiting

ut-lilly- iam sure it depends on how bad you did the first time but a 33 and a 3.84 will open alot of doors

you guys are the best. thanks for being so positive and supportive! it's nice to know i'm not alone in this miserable position.
thanks for lending an ear.
and thank goodness for margaritas...

Sorry guys this is another I'm so depressed post... I was processed about three weeks ago and haven't heard from anyone yet. I think my chances are pretty much shot because people who were processed way after me have already gotten interviews and after three weeks I have come to the realization that my application has been reviewed and sent to the reject pile. 🙁

It took me a little over three weeks to get my first interview . I was processed 8/4 and I just got an interview from Galveston on Thursday (10/21)... so it takes ahwile. I think UT Houston sends 'em out real fast, but I did not get an interview from them this year so I dunno. I bet admissions offices are flooded now with all of the august mcat peeps... give it ahwile longer before you give up hope... It's the weekend..be happy!

I'm right there with you, about feeling like this process turns us all into zombies. I've actually had moments when I just start analyzing how I might be able to get into the adcoms heads and convince them that I'd be a good fit at their school.

A lot of it has to do with the fact it's all out of our control.

Still, this forum seems to have shown me that not all premeds are crazy - I went to a big state school, and yeah, I was part of some really awesome organizations that helped me stay grounded, but it's been an uphill battle. People on here cheer each other on, post clapping icons, etc.

Heck, it beats the real world sometimes.;-) Even a couple of my really close friends, who were premed, turned kinda shallow and obsessive toward the end of college, and admittedly so did I. ;-P Not to mention, going to a big school, where everyone you meet seems to like to point out that they're a "Pre med major" (it's not even a freaking major!!), I got to a point where I would just look at an individual or group of people studying in the library on Friday night, and instantly think "Oh, they're premed!"

So, anyways, the point of my rant is that there are a LOT of people who feel the same way that you do, & the waiting really blows.

Here's a quote from a pre-law friend of mine who is a Japanese major: "Shikata ga nai." It means "Nothing to be done about it." My pre-law friends are just as anxious about their futures, so pre-health majors certainly don't corner that market. Basically, you've done what you can, and now it's time to think of the future, and not choices you've made in the past.

Now, I'm going to follow my own words, and do something constructive today!!

you may have been processed 3 weeks ago by TMDSAS but that doesnt mean youve already been rejected - you have to realize that all the schools are getting a TON of apps from tmdsas right now because of the huge mass of people that took the august mcat. UT-H and UT-SW are rumored to offer interviews just based on stats but the other schools are known to take a lot of time in reviewing the apps, reading personal statements, checking letters of rec, etc...and that takes some time, especially around this time of year. so don't worry - just sit back and relax for now. remember that you still have over 2 months of interviews left.

I just wanted to say Congrats to all those who have recently received interview invites!! 👍

Also, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of those that are waiting! Keep your chins up for now. I'm just glad we are all here to share our fears and anxieties. At a school where only 3 other pre-meds are applying this year, there is not much we can share with each other. Except, I'm always sharing stories that y'all have posted. I always tell them, "there's this guy on the internet, same thing happened to him....just call the office" and stuff like that. I keep trying to recruit them to SDN, but no luck. 🙁

Anyway, just got back from the Tech interview and I was pleasantly surprised! I went there not thinking much of Tech or West Texas. I really had a fun day and enjoyed everybody I met there. If anybody has any specific questions about the day, just PM me.

As of now (before my Southwestern and A&M interviews), this is the ranking in my head:
1) UTHSCSA
2) Tech
3) UTMB
4) UTH

This is subject to change after my next two interviews.

Good luck to everybody!! :luck: :luck:

i got an invite to interview at southwestern. i cannot express how happy i am--this is my FIRST invite!!

thanks to everyone for listening to my depressing posts...hopefully it will all be downhill from here.

Wow! I thought SFA was a bigger school than that--only three pre-meds applying? It must make you stand out, unlike those of us from UT-Austin! I've actually been to SFA for cheerleading camp in high school. Don't remember much about the school, but I have been there, and I do know where Nacogdoches is 😉

Can you come up with a not-too-dorky TX applicant cheer?? 😀

We should have a handful more, (~5) but they still need to complete and submit their applications. Who knows if they will or not. 🙄

As a freshman, there were hundreds of us and each year hundreds more come!! It's weird now that only a few of us are actually applying.

UTLilli-CONGRATS!!! 👍 Are you going to be there 11/20? If so, we'll have to meet up! 🙂

And I am getting dressed up to go drink with a friend. 😀
